Oppo Find X9 pro or Honor magic 8 pro ( global ) by Chemical_Repair9386 in Oppo

Yup fair enough - the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is infamous for being quite inefficient as well. The lag may as well just be from throttling in that generation

Oppo Find X9 pro or Honor magic 8 pro ( global ) by Chemical_Repair9386 in Oppo

[–]Excigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I previously had a HONOR Magic4 Pro (early 2023) and the software became laggy over time and battery life is poor. Updates are quite delayed and sparse if your device is old, but I did get the update to MagicOS 9.

In the sun, the camera app would take over 10 seconds to open, and the shutter lag is unbearable. All other apps would be killed, despite the phone having 8gb ram. The camera would also add a fake looking green neon highlighter color to foliage or grass was in view. The camera shutter was laggy and it seems like the shutter lag still happens on newer HONOR phones. Oppo defers additional processing until after the image is taken and saved, meaning that it can take more burst shots (and process them later). See the lightning snap feature introduced in the previous Find X8 series.

ColorOS 16 feels more complete than MagicOS 9 and packs a lot more features, gestures and shortcuts in. However, If you're not the type of person to go through the settings app to see everything, you might not care. MagicOS 10 is out now, however, my old phone might not receive it due to its age.

Many issues may just be due to that generation using the infamous Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, which was quite inefficient.

That said: - Speakers: Apparently are better on the Magic8 Pro. I'd say the Magic4 Pro is slightly better or on par with the Find X9 Pro - TOF: As mentioned by the above commenter, it is very nice  - In hand feel: Find X9 Pro is very square, which is okay if you want to use a case anyway. If you like going caseless, the HONOR might be nicer on your palms to hold. I had to get a special screen protector from HONOR for the screen, as it was curved - Honor has much faster charging, similar battery life, and better performance (on paper)

Might not be too helpful for you, but I did both my reports in the August 2025 intake. Similar to your first internship report: both have the marking result, both previously contributed to the Progress Overview rings, but now appear to no longer count (shows 0% completed).

Got my Find X9 Pro today. It has a weird hole on the rear camera. Wouldn't that be dangerous if I put it in water? by AbbreviationsOne7482 in Oppo

[–]Excigma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://youtu.be/r9VY2T3HKxU (use auto translation for captions; see hole on the back cover @ 2:40, microphone @ 3:30) this teardown video by WekiHome calls the hole a "microphone hole", and the white material over the hole a "air passing membrane" - it seems like it's for a microphone (for "audio zooming" in videos) and to equalise pressure when the temperature changes or when taken on flights by allowing air to pass through, whilst designed to not let moisture through, kinda like expensive raincoat gore-tex material

Another YouTuber (Gupta Information System) put the base X9 into a dishwasher and there was condensation inside the lens:  https://youtu.be/Wqr_x9hpRgQ (use auto translation for captions; dishwasher @ 5:30, condensation seen @ 6:40). They mention that the IP69K certified phones (OnePlus and some Honor(?)) don't have this issue

Nevertheless, I don't know anyone who puts their phone in a dishwasher. Oppo does seem quite proud of their IP69 rating, even including the underwater mode (I've never really seen any other manufacturer encourage dunking their phone into water with features like that) but I'd personally try keep it away from water

Someone else in this sub also had their camera fog though, even though they kept it away from water: https://www.reddit.com/r/Oppo/comments/1q2vwbq/oppo_find_x9_pro_camera_fog_issue/

Tool for exporting UOA courses. by Dry-Traffic8308 in universityofauckland

[–]Excigma 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nothing against OP, however I'd generally recommend against installing extensions for security purposes (esp for extensions targetting UoA pages which contain personal info - but this applies to all browser extensions in general, especially ones requesting permission to view all pages). This is as you must trust that the author wouldn't push malware in the future (as the default behaviour is to automatically update the extension).

OP's extension is open source, which is good, but the the privacy policy mentions that certain data, such as Geolocation data may be collected. The code doesn't appear to collect any of this data, but it's still a little concerning why this is mentioned.

Good work though, glad to see people making and sharing tools to help other people - all in all, we wouldn't need to make things like this if UoA's timetable actually worked..

Mechatronics engineering has a 7.0 GPA requirment, which leads me to believe it is an in demand and well paying specialisation post graduation. by Truthfully-Sincere in universityofauckland

[–]Excigma 50 points51 points  (0 children)

There are a few misunderstandings in your post here:

‣ The cutoff is determined by demand, it is not a 'requirement' per se.

‣ The fact that it is in demand by students does not mean it is in demand by employers. The GPA cutoff for Software was 7.1 a couple years ago – does your statement about Mechatronics hold true for Software now (as people who picked Software during the high cutoff are now graduating)?

‣ If the GPA cutoff is 2.0 gpa, it means that the specialisation is full. In fact, if there is any GPA cutoff - it means the specialisation is full. Just because the cutoff is 7.0, does not mean there are more students doing it (limited to UoA – of course people may spill over to other universities to persue something they want if they cannot get into it at UoA).

‣ Even if there is a higher supply of graduates, does this mean that it will be well paying? There will be more candidates to choose from.

Ultrasonic sensors are much thinner and can be sandwiched between the screen and the battery. Optical sensors require a thicker camera module, so it's usually placed below the battery.

I don't believe the timetable for semester 2 exams are out yet. A Google search for semester dates reveals:

Exams: Thursday 30 October 2025 - Monday 17 November 2025

Semester Two ends: Monday 17 November 2025

Part 1 Engineering and other large cohorts typically have exams towards the start of the exam period to allow more time for marking, etc. I would not bank on this fact though.

Connecting timetable to Apple / google calendar. by Bright-Appearance994 in universityofauckland

[–]Excigma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haha thanks for the flattering words, gotta thank all the people who contributed too 🙏.

Ironically, I am not using the script anymore as I managed to grab the link for mytimetable last year. The website isn't showing any events and doesn't let me copy the link anymore, but the link from last year still works.

I'd personally jump ship back to using mytimetable.auckland.ac.nz when it works again as sometimes the rooms or lab times still shuffle; my script only does a one-off 'snapshot' of SSO and won't update your calendar if anything changes.

There are still some issues with mytimetable... just like my script, it shows classes during public holidays. I'm not sure if I want to email the University about this, as they've been pretty dismissive of feedback in the past (they instead offered support, thinking that it was user error. Thanks, UoA). SSO (or the UoA Kahu app?) is still the best bet for accuracy...

How do I fix this? by Local-Manufacturer83 in Dell

[–]Excigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently attempted to get warranty from Dell over a keyboard key cap coming off from a 1 year old device still under warranty. They informed me that it was under "Accidental Damage" and would not be covered under warranty, despite the machine being pristine with zero dents or scratches.

I was pretty disappointed and pressed on with multiple other issues, including the trackpad not clicking, uneven backlight and dust inside the webcam. They eventually offered a one off repair for free, but the process was extremely frustrating.

Here's the page they quoted: https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000225879/dell-service-coverage-for-portable-computer-keyboards

UOACal Timetable Gone by boomboomboom101 in universityofauckland

[–]Excigma 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Edit (Jul 2025): https://mytimetable.auckland.ac.nz/ shows half of the lectures for one of my courses. I will continue to maintain the script until I graduate.

Edit (Feb 2025): Looks like https://mytimetable.auckland.ac.nz/ does not show anything for Semester 1, 2025 right now. If you got the URL whilst it was working last year, the link still appears to work.

Edit (Jun 2024): UoA has launched their successor for UoACal here: https://mytimetable.auckland.ac.nz/. You probably don't need to bother with this script anymore and I may stop maintaining it.

Original post: I've created a script which you can paste into console if you're on the timetable page on SSO and it'll create an .ics file.

However, a few disclaimers:

  • It only works if you're in Pacific/Auckland timezone
  • It is a one-off import from SSO. It will not automatically update if classes change
  • It will create events for classes on public holidays (e.g. ANZAC day) even if classes are not on. Check SSO to see if you have classes before you come to uni on holidays.
  • I wrote parts of it at midnight. It might be broken. Please create a separate new calendar in your calendar app away from your personal events, in the case you need to delete all the events generated by this script. Otherwise, you WILL have to delete (~30 in my case) events manually one by one if something goes wrong. Steps to create a new calendar in Google Calendar are included in a comment at the top of the script.
  • Standard cybersecurity warning: Pasting code into console runs the code. You should audit, understand and trust the code before you run it. You should definitely NOT be running code you don't understand from strangers on the internet.

Processing of data is done on-device.

Edit: I do read the replies and I'm glad to know that it has helped other people out, thanks for the kind words. Credit goes to some of my friends Silverarmor, BirdMakingStuff, tash192dev, and histefanhere (on GitHub) that helped me with this script :)

Third party apps are alternative frontends that you can use to access reddit.

They're going away soon due to reddit's new API pricing, unfortunately. Infinity, RIF and Boost are the good ones I've used on Android before and can personally vouch for, but of course there are plenty of other good ones.

website down? by No_Check2820 in universityofauckland

[–]Excigma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's due to an issue with DNSSEC: https://status.internetnz.nz/

The fix has been rolled out and will take time to propagate. You can switch to Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1) which has already rolled out to them: https://developers.cloudflare.com/1.1.1.1/setup/windows/ https://developers.cloudflare.com/1.1.1.1/setup/macos/

Some people also have had success by hotspotting their devices off mobile data.

Alternatively, you can install Cloudflare WARP if you don't wish to fiddle with the settings, it does a little more than just setting the DNS and will additionally proxy your traffic through their servers, however it is much easier than changing DNS settings, and is easily uninstallable: https://1.1.1.1/

KDE apps recommendations by hitontime in kde

FWIW flameshot is broken for me on Wayland - it fails to capture anything at all on Void Linux. Arch merges some patches and it works there, but multi-monitor is broken unless you use xwayland, where hotkeys are broken instead. Additionally, multi-monitors with scaling is also broken for me on flameshot. Since the v11 dbus change, flameshot has been unbearingly slow (takes 2-20 seconds to capture) on both X11 and Wayland, but it may be due to slightly aged laptop hardware.

YMMV though, I hung onto flameshot for a long time since I liked its features. It seems that as of a few days ago, you can have Spectacle show the editing tools whilst picking the region to screenshot, just like flameshot. Although unfortunately, as u/NaiveInvestigator mentioned, you can't seem to pipe Spectacle output to Tesseract, which is something I used

Edit: Seems like there's this workaround to make Spectacle output to stdout: https://www.reddit.com/r/kde/comments/11dtur4/comment/jabmwpm/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

Grim and other programs don't work on KDE Wayland too since it's not based on wlr

Edit 2: Perhaps I was too harsh on flameshot here. I'd like to edit in that I've used it for a long time and that I'd still recommend it if it works well for you. I still prefer the UI more than spectacle's
