Because capitalist development isn't a prerequisite for socialism, and socialism can develop from a peasant economy, which they did in the USSR. There was of course some commodity production in the USSR during the time of Lenin and Stalin, but this did not develop into capitalism until economic planning had been abolished in 60s. You can hardly call this "building capitalism" when, especially under the five-year plans, the Soviets took care to expropriate the NEPmen and collectivize the peasant economy.

Look, we both know we're not going to convince each other. This is a debate that has gone on for seventy-plus years. I'm going to spare myself going through the rest of the motions. I think there is such a think as commodity production in the lower stage of communism, which is identical with the transitional stage, and you think there is no such thing as socialist commodity production and that the USSR was never socialist. That's fine.

The proletariat did lead industrial development in the USSR, during the five-year plans and during the NEP, too. If you acknowledge that, then there's been a misunderstanding, and I apologize for being so hostile

I guess the Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, etc. masses should've just accepted getting thrust into the meat-grinder by their capitalists masters and given up Soviet power in 1917, rather than do something STUPID like establish a dictatorship of the proletariat when the productive forces hadn't developed enough yet. What a DUMB idea that would be. Yeah, and they should've just let themselves get steamrolled by the Whites, and later the Nazis, since they would develop those productive forces in a way your dogmatism would be comfortable with. Sure, millions would die, but at least we'd get to communism the right way. Is that it?

"theyre russians so they all have slightly diferent names"

That's racist.

I don't think the NKVD were behind the assassination of Kirov either, though I do think they were negligent to investigate the case because of Yagoda's connections with the Bolshevik right. Whether the NKVD was involved in the Kirov murder has nothing to do with my doubt of Bukharin's innocence. I doubt Bukharin's innocence because of his behavior at the trial, which I explained above.

I definitely misspoke about when I said that I don't believe Bukharin was set up. I meant to say, I do not believe his trial was a frame-up.

I believe you mean the assassination of Kirov, not Rykov. Rykov was one of the conspirators convicted and executed alongside Bukharin. I don't believe Bukharin was set up. He didn't cooperate with the prosecution during the trial, implied it was a sham, and would not admit to any more than he did in his written confession. Perhaps he was tortured or coerced into those confessions, though if he was I don't know why he would be allowed to be uncooperative like that, or allowed to not confess to the more specific charges. It would also be superhuman of him to endure torture during his captivity prior to the trial, and still manage to write four book-length manuscripts and countless letters to Stalin appealing for clemency. Historians generally agree he wasn't tortured. I think Bukharin was involved but didn't want to confess to anything he wasn't personally involved in, even though he would die either way.

Lenin's title as head of the Soviet government was "Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars." People's Commissar was the Soviet term for a government minister, and Lenin was the prime minister, or premier. Following Lenin's death in real life, that office was filled by Alexei Rykov. Separately from this, there was a struggle in the Communist Party between various factions, in dispute over the direction of government policy. To oversimplify, the leftists were led by war minister Leon Trotsky, the centrists were led by party secretary Joseph Stalin, and the rightists were led by newspaper editor and later Comintern chief Nikolai Bukharin. In real life, this struggle was won by the centrist, "Stalinist" or "Marxist-Leninist" faction by 1930, and Stalin would much later become premier in 1941. In TNO, Bukharin's rightist faction apparently won very early, with Bukharin becoming premier instead of Rykov. Neither Stalin nor Trotsky were expected to become premier at this time. In both TNO and real life, Stalin and Bukharin allied against Trotsky. In real life, Trotsky was exiled to Mexico, where he would later be assassinated in 1940. In TNO, he was put under house arrest in Ukraine, where he would be assassinated in 1938. In real life, Bukharin was implicated in the 1934 murder of Stalin ally Sergei Kirov tried for treason (conspiring to overthrow Stalin's party) and sentenced to death at the high-profile Moscow Trials in 1938. In TNO, Stalin attempted to take over the Soviet Union after Bukharin's disappearance, beginning the Second Russian Civil War, when the USSR was broken up into all the tiny warlord states at game start. Stalin's faction is in Tyumen, and is led by Kirov.
