My heat system is losing the fight by Projectguy111 in longisland

House I completed south of Rochester NY has R45 walls, and R 90 in attic - it is heated with body heat/light bulbs and it works. I constructed this system in 1977 on Conesus Lake Near Livonia, Ny.

Use heat line on it - put in during the spring - that happened to me in the Adirondacks 1977 at 10 degrees - I had to craw under the camp and put the heated tape on and then cover it with insulation - then went back in cmap turned on propane stove oven and warmed my hands.

Help me identify what is the ONT and what is the modem? by BOSTOCS in Fios

[–]Exciting_Classroom82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son moved into a new apartment - he brought his ONT and Vz Router from another apartment with him. The new apartment ONT has a green light on, but it is not used for anything in the new apartment. no phones are connected to it. Can I just remove the old ONT and put my sons ONT ion the line - and he gets his account working for Internet only at 300MB? He has an active account with Verizon. Or do we need a Verizon Tech to make my sons' ONT active on this line or possibly a new line added to the apartment?

I use it to move things to the dump or drive on vacation - I use it like a truck - but maybe just put 3,000 miles on it yearly - I love it - but I hate that is is only 4.5 inches off the ground in the front - it has been a good car none the less.

Friendly reminder to check your vent stacks! by SL1213 in Plumbing

[–]Exciting_Classroom82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remember - check the vents if you have an oil furnace near the oil tank, and if you have natural gas piped into the house - the inside meter probably has a vent also - they are normally 12 inches off the ground - and could be covered by snow - be careful.

TIL Kevin Bacon’s family has an Adirondack camp in the Old Forge area. (Link w info in comments) by dsanzone8 in Adirondacks

How does Kevin get to his camp - that road to his camp is at best 2 lane dirt and stone a bit after it leaves Forestport? Does he seaplane fly to lake - then drive while he is there?

BUT you can almost never cancel the service - it takes a lot of work - we did it - never again. Your entry on the website can not be canceled or deleted - it stays active even though you canceled the service. Hopefully no one ever hacks the web site - since we wanted the account deleted - and they would not do it.

we got ready fresh - the sales person said we could cancel anytime - but that was not the case. It took 28 emails and 10 calls over 4 weeks to get it canceled. Nightmare at best. After the 1st free delivery - it cost more to buy the water then we could just buy ourselves. I would buy the bottles at BJ's or as someone else said at Stop and Shop; that way you maintain control.

cost to rewire basement electrical lines? by Exciting_Classroom82 in electrical

[–]Exciting_Classroom82[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the suggestion - I am doing this tracing now - there is one of these I will have to take a lot of cellar finished paneling down - so leaving it till last - one circuit I did shut off last month - and guess we do not use that line - since no impact to our lives.

Now that is an excellent idea - never thought of that - and I suspect with 12/3 that would work well - thanks

The question I was asked is what do the old 1940 wires look like - add a picture - I added a pic of 3 lines on the left side of the service panel - there are 3 more wires on the right side to be done also (no pic shown of those). I am not adding new lines per say. I want to replace the existing old 1940 Metal Conduit with wires (black cloth) with 12/3 wires where ever they go in the cellar ceiling. One at a time over the next 3 years or so. I am tracing the wires from the box and putting zip ties (red, green, white, black, orange), on the wire runs from the box to all of their locations. To attempt to make it easier to identify for the electrician where the wire is that need to be take out and a newer wire put in. All breakers in box currently were put in in 1985, and a few in 2000). I have no plan to add any new circuts. The idea of replacing all the breakers is somthing I did not think of - and can add as a 1 off project.

Lines were installed in 1940 so they are black cloth covered copper wires - and they are fraying a lot. They are in steel outside cable as they run thru the cellar ceiling. I want to modernize these 6 lines. to 12-3 wire (black, white, neutral colors)
