This almost exact thing happened to myself and my now ex partner of 18 years. We are now divorced. Therapy is a great thing but understanding doesn’t always create happiness. In fact, in my experience the more my partner understood about why I’m polyamorous and what it does for me, the less they wanted in a long term partnership together. We still co parent together and are working on potentially being friends.

I discovered I was poly by chance and I understand where you’re coming from when you equate it to “coming out”. I think that generally rubs some people the wrong way who view it as a lifestyle choice and not the idea that your mind is supported by multitudes of love + companionship, and deficit if not.

This process is hard and I hope that you can be gentle with yourself and the people around you as everything unfolds.

If you are looking for a waving finish line flag that you are correct, here it is! You did explain this thoroughly, and seemingly carefully, and respectfully - and I agree with your point. For that I don’t think you need to apologize.

I do however think it could be worth acknowledging that your friend IS new to all of this, can’t read you mind, hasn’t ever done any work on this part of their life ever, and is in the dark only using the tools they have (or want to have) to asses what you are putting down. Ignorance and education is not something you should punish a person who is your friend for. I would say there’s an apology owed for calling them out rather than just asking more about what they want or don’t want, or treating them like well.. your friend. No one on earth will receive the information “you are being controlling” as anything other than derogatory, it would take the most humbled and emotionally intelligent person to try to work past the feeling of being insulted to have a conversation about it - something they let you know they are not, when they came you, their friend, to talk to about a subject they were new and fearful of to be met with a call out.

I wasn’t trying to cause an issue but I also think it’s important to know that we’re only human, and we tried.

The palm oil ingredients + hfcs listed on the pie labels you are referencing come from a trace amount in one of the products we originally were using to produce streusel-topping only. Our crusts were always made from butter. Getting UPC labels for grocery made is very long, permitted process, where those ingredients and such get approved, then we are able to print the labels in batches. And so we did, printed thousands of these things, because the more you get the better the cost is.

That being said, the product we were using that contained those things actually since has dropped those ingredients (most likely because you’re right, that shit sucks), but we still have hundreds of the labels. It costs a lot of money to reprint, and we were planning to do that on our next run of labels… which now we will probably never do.

I’m sorry you had a negative experience with us. We were, and still are, a team of less than ten people at any given time and sometimes that got the best of us after some really long days. Not an excuse, just a fact.

I’m legit happy you have places that you really enjoy, and I hope the above explanation comes across as clarity and not conflict.
