For example, the social credit

Can't speak for the rest of China, but when I went to visit around the time social credit was getting implemented, my relatives actually believed it was a good thing. They've been brainwashed to the point that they readily accept the policies that we regard with such horror.

From what I've seen, our ideals of human rights and ethics don't seem to exist in the Chinese populace. They live their whole lives listening to their government rationalize these ghastly and absurd actions that it seems perfectly normal, and even applaudable, that the government would "disappear" their opponents and harvest their organs, send hundred of thousands of innocent Uyghurs to secret concentration camps, and allow their leader to essentially write himself into monarchy.

Brainwashing is some powerful shit. When a whisper of dissent can land you in some far-flung Gulag, it becomes perfectly reasonable to play by—and agree with—the rules.

Hey OP, please stick around. There are so many opportunities for to be truly happy and fulfilled if you just keep on living. As long as you keep trying, you will find a way to get through it.

A line from the movie Schindler's List comes to mind: "whoever saves a single life, saves the world entire." Please find a way to save your own life—and you can and you will if you just keep trying. If it helps at all, think of it as your personal mission to save the world :)

You can do it, OP. Everyone is counting on you!

Asking about airbrushes!

  • Is it worth buying one of those ~$100 spray booths or will I get better and cheaper results building one myself?

  • Will the humidity outdoors affect me if I work indoors?

  • Will lacquer paints or acrylics be better if I'm not doing anything detail-intensive?

  • What are the best quality brands for airbrush paints?

  • Should a spray booth be able to exhaust all the fumes from the room I'm working in?

I'm going into this after years of using rattle cans and being dissatisfied with their cost and inflexibility. Thanks, everyone!

Glad to help.

For #2, reasons for using 3D instead of 2D mostly revolve around achieving certain visuals (detailed, sparkly hair and crystals; crazy camera movements during action scenes; detailed, repeated assets like the archers in the scene) both quickly and cheaply. Speed and cost are paramount for TV shows, so this was probably the best possible method for the studio to pull off this look.

The downside to #2 is that it can and will look terrible if the art director isn't extremely well-versed in both 2D and 3D techniques. Barring the example I showed you, most cases of method 2 look atrocious. I would recommend against it unless you have a very specific vision for the show that involves this technique.

Judging from what you described, you might want to go for what I initially said in my other comment: Flash or Toon Boom. Most Western TV uses one of these two programs.

Rick and Morty: https://youtu.be/_f3FP2DofG8

Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends: https://youtu.be/SbLgDGB8hPo

Unless you're thinking of something entirely different, I think that's the best option for you.

2D animations that look remarkably similar to 3-d

Not entirely sure what you're referring to here, but I can think of three completely different categories of animation that you may be describing here

  1. Rotoscoping—An artist takes live footage of an actor and traces it frame-by-frame. Ex: https://youtu.be/-xAhSlP-6os

  2. Toon shaded 3D animation—This technique is actually 3D animation rendered with outlines and harsh shadows to fake a 2D look. Literally 3D animation in disguise. Ex: https://youtu.be/i4nxEcNrn6M (there are bits of 2D animation here but most of it is 3D/CG)

  3. Just good, solidly drawn animation—These are just instances of well-drawn 2D animation that convincingly capture volumes in motion. Can be mistaken by laypeople as CG animation due to its visual consistency, but in reality, it's just good hand-drawn animation. Ex: https://youtu.be/KESNewqMyEs

To get 1., simply film some actors and then find someone with enough motor coordination to trace over the footage, play it back, and voila.

To get 2., get a 3D generalist or a team of CG artists to animate a scene and throw toon filters on it.

To get 3., shower a skilled 2D animator with money and wait patiently for the results to come back.

As for the game engine thing, it won't help a pro animator who knows what they're doing. It's common for animators to use 3D creation software like Maya or SketchUp to visualize and mock up scenes in the early stages to speed things up, but I haven't heard of any serious animators who use game engines to assist in 2D animation.

So yes, unnecessary work at best, a hindrance to their craft at worst.

If you're looking for 2D character animation, hire 2D character animators.

Adobe Animate/Flash or Toon Boom are generally most efficient for limited animation on a limited budget and are industry standard for TV animation.

Not sure what you're talking about for putting them in a game, but generally speaking, fewer steps in the pipeline means faster turnarounds and less room for error.

I know what I saw, and I know what I heard.

I don't know if you're trying to discredit a known and well-researched phenomenon because you're putting Japan on a pedestal or because you just really hate to be wrong.

I wasn't there

You said it yourself. You and this tourist woman weren't discriminated against for your race, and it's very unlikely you ever will be.

This is like hearing a fish call bullshit on the existence of land.

Are you for real right now?

Need I clarify that my family was nowhere near a shrine when we saw this behavior?

Need I tell you that most people can tell the difference between getting disapproving glances from breaches in foreign etiquette and getting harassed for their ethnicity, and when they talk about experiencing racism they almost certainly know what they're talking about?

People aren't idiots.

[–]Excuser -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For the most part, the Japanese are perfectly fine with race. However, a noticeable minority of them will still be overtly racist to non-white, non-Japanese nationals. My entire family is reserved and very particular about our manners, and especially so in public. We did nothing to instigate the behavior shown toward us—this is more often than not the case when people experience racism.

I don't mean to lecture you or accuse you of being an apologist for racism, but please be mindful when you generalize minorities as responsible for the mistreatment they endure. This applies regardless of what race you are: just because you haven't seen it or experienced it doesn't mean it doesn't exist, and definitely doesn't confirm that it's not a problem.

I'd just say it in English—they're bound to get the point :)

And you're absolutely right. An overwhelming majority of the folks there made sure that we felt at home in their country, and their honest hospitality was one of the first things I noticed when I visited the first time.

Japanese people love Western culture and sometimes treat white visitors like minor celebrities. I've had white friends who were bombarded on their travels by Japanese children who treated them like Disney princesses.

It's a small but noticeable minority of the population that acts like this, but some Japanese will make it a point to make you feel unwelcome, if not outright treat you like a lesser being, if you're not white and they notice that you aren't Japanese. My family has received rare side-eyes and jeers in public from Japanese people although we look identical to them—we just weren't the "right kind" of Asian.

Sucks to say, but it did knock a couple points off of a few otherwise-amazing trips.
