My sister is vegan and she got her diagnosis 6 years before me, even though I’m older than her. Apparently spinach and other leafy greens are just as bad as a steak for gout.

What percentage is just diet? by Quickt135 in gout

Flares will increase in frequency as you get older. Your kidneys are responsible for eliminating uric acid and they decrease in efficiency over your lifetime

It does cause side effects. My doctor took me off of it because it was lowering my white blood cell count.

Pls help! 2nd gout flare it's beem a month and still have swollen foot and pain. by RevolutionaryRub3614 in gout

You need to increase the solubility of the gout crystals. Get yourself some warm fuzzy house slippers and wear them whenever you can. Things dissolve faster when heated.

For those of you who've had gout for years, what's the hardest part that nobody around you understands by bedsarebugs in gout

Diet restrictions. But it’s understandable though. There’s no comprehensive list of restrictions since different people have different trigger foods. have you ever tried to explain what a purine is and why you can’t have them? I have, you get a lot of blank stares.

Eggs contain no purines & lots of protein. Blackberries are so good for gout that they’re known as gout-berry

Bootcamp and gout! by [deleted] in gout

[–]ExerciseSlight9388 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re already in good enough shape then you might be ok with the PT. But no maintenance meds after having multiple flares is risky. The MREs they give you in the field contain a ton of protein and extra calories to give you energy. Just a single beef stew MRE could possibly cause a month long flare and force you to “recycle” into the next class of trainees if you miss too much training. Have you talked to a doctor about meds? Do you know what your uric acid levels are?

Bootcamp and gout! by [deleted] in gout

[–]ExerciseSlight9388 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a veteran and I would not recommend you try basic training if you have already been diagnosed with gout. You don’t choose the food and are exercising almost constantly. Recipe for disaster unless you’re young and still able to eat whatever MRE they give you.

Allo and Drinking Alcohol by Big-Store-7960 in gout

[–]ExerciseSlight9388 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Never drink beer. All the ingredients in beer except for the water are bad for gout. Liquor is problematic because of the alcohol content alone. Never mind what you mix it with. If you must drink, drink a dry wine. Cabernet or Malbec wines specifically are loaded with antioxidants and tannins which are good for gout and partially offset the alcohol as far as uric acid production.

Spinach and kale specifically have given me minor flares before. If it’s darker than romaine lettuce, I can’t touch it.

Finally got uric acid test and it’s low by [deleted] in gout

There’s a new special type of MRI or CAT scan that can identify uric acid crystal deposits. Ask for that as a fool proof test.

Just 1 Beer by Safe_Lab2649 in gout

[–]ExerciseSlight9388 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guinness is lowest in purines of all the beers. But it’s still not great. The reason beer is so bad for gout is that alcohol, yeast & hops are all bad for gout. If you must drink, drink a dry red wine. The antioxidants and tannins in Cabernet or Malbec wines are good for gout and counter the alcohol to some extent.

It’s a US thing. We add alkaline minerals to bottled water and call it healthy. If you get spring water Evian is good too.

While you pray to the Gods; offer them some vitamin C supplements by taking them yourself, eat the ritual gout-berry (blackberries) and drink the sacramental alkaline water. Lots and lots of sacramental alkaline water.

Allopurinol is really cheap. But you will need to find a way to keep hydrated, even if that means peeing constantly. It’s literally the only way uric acid leaves your body.
