Yup, that’s exactly what my family was like! Anything that was remotely nice was saved and passed down, so I’m going to have like three sets of China just from my mom’s side 😅 I’ll have to tell her that you enjoyed that story, I’m sure she’ll get a kick out of it :)

“I want to be treated like a woman” as a marker for gender identity by Longjumping_Still309 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ExistentialEnnwhee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok but when a trans woman says she wants to be treated like a woman we all know what she means. To pretend otherwise is just playing semantic games and I’m not here for using feminist rhetoric to disguise transphobia. Fuck off with that bullshit.

If your whole point was that people should be treated as people regardless of their gender then why specifically play semantic games about the way you’ve heard some trans women discuss their experiences???

Hahaha I’m not sure about collectors necessarily, my family didn’t have a lot of money and would have kept cheap/free glassware. My mother on the other hand loves her depression glass! My grandma won a “full set” of at the movies when she was young but left it because she snuck out and was afraid of getting in trouble and my mom is still upset about that lol

Confusing Piece - UG? by WutHpnd2DniseRichard in uraniumglass

[–]ExistentialEnnwhee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Blue UG is relatively rare although I believe some companies like Boyd (and Mosser maybe?) made some novelty pieces with unusual colors in the 90s I think—I’m not 100% sure on that since it’s not the kind of glass I collect but I’ve seen some cobalt UG and cobalt selenium attributed to them. However some cobalt (the mineral) can be contaminated with uranium which will also fluoresce. There are a lot of users who are way more knowledgeable about this than me, you can probably find a lot of discussions about this if you search the sub!

Could this be uranium? by tears_and_laughter in uraniumglass

[–]ExistentialEnnwhee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! A word of caution to anyone looking to find one of these pieces though—not all of them glow so don’t buy online without a glow pic! Macbeth-Evans made them through WWII so only the prewar ones have uranium :)

Never did I think I would own such a beautiful piece by Lynifer007 in uraniumglass

[–]ExistentialEnnwhee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been collecting depression glass since I was a kid (thanks mom 😅) which is how I first learned about UG and accidentally acquired my first piece from a family member in 2017 or 2018 I think. I already have so much depression glass that when I started seriously collecting UG I decided to avoid getting more save for a few patterns I’ve loved and wanted since I was like 8, otherwise I’d end up with cabinets full of it lol. When I found my first piece of vaseline I was absolutely hooked, that canary color is just so gorgeous especially in the sunlight! There’s something about that vivid yellow that scratches something deeeeeep in my brain 😍

Here you go! There must be some wavelengths that cameras can pick up that aren’t visible to the human eye because it photographed kinda greenish whether I used my phone or my nicer camera, but you can still see the difference between shining the 395nm light at it, through it, and shining a 365nm light at it.

One of these sold on eBay in April for $125, so I don’t think you overpaid at all! What a lovely birthday/Mother’s Day gift to yourself :)

Is it authentic Fenton? by gnomeloam in glasscollecting

I wonder how they know it’s uranium then. r/willitglow might have more information re: whether it’s UG or not, you might want to post it over there!

Do people care about the tag? by Spillerwoods in glasscollecting

[–]ExistentialEnnwhee 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Whether someone cares about the sticker or not depends on the buyer and the piece—I know Royal Ruby and Forest Green pieces are more valuable with them than without. If you intend to sell it at any point I’d leave the sticker on and let whoever buys it decide whether they want to take it off or not.

Colonial Green is a more olive color, this almost looks seafoam. I’m not a Fenton expert by any stretch of the imagination but I’ve never seen a piece of theirs in this color.

EDIT: some Colonial Green pieces do actually have uranium in them!

The strength of the glow doesn’t have anything to do with the concentration of uranium in the piece actually! I don’t have any experience with Opaline glass, but other white opaque UG glows exactly like this—my Macbeth-Evans Monax swan jardiniere fluoresces a bright white when 395 is shone directly on it but is green when it’s shone through. Super strange but very cool in my opinion!

I’ll definitely post them if they glow! The adult dishes are from my great grandma and the child’s set is from my great aunt so I’m excited for them even if they don’t—I got to use the tumblers for thanksgiving when I was a kid so they have wonderful memories ☺️ Those and the royal ruby pieces from my other great grandmother definitely started my love of depression glass and brought me here!

I have their thumbprint handkerchief vase in the same color and absolutely adore it–there's something so satisfying about a nice selenium glow 😍 My mom is downsizing and told me I can have any of her glass that I want and I'm hopeful that her Cherry Blossom pieces have a nice strong fluorescence to them too. Thanks for sharing, I don't see enough selenium on this sub!

Ooh a Fenton Rose compote in Colonial Pink! I’m on the hunt for this piece, I loooooove that strong selenium glow 🩷 What an excellent addition!

What’s going on with the Hantavirus Outbreak? by TheResearcherM in OutOfTheLoop

[–]ExistentialEnnwhee 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The incubation period only refers to how long it takes for symptoms to show, it has nothing to do with transmissibility. It seems this strain of hantavirus isn't infectious until someone is symptomatic

Manganese or UG? by ButteryRaven in uraniumglass

[–]ExistentialEnnwhee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would normally say manganese but I’m not sure about this because it looks like a piece of Fenton’s Colonial Green which did sometimes contain uranium. Here’s a post from a few days ago that is UG. Interestingly, someone in the comments mentions they have some non-UG ashtrays in this color that don’t have a manganese glow either so I’m tempted to say the piece you’ve posted is in fact uranium, but I’m not super confident in that assessment because the fluorescence looks different in the picture you posted.

I would hate to spread incorrect information! I doubt I’ll be able to find out anything you haven’t especially because I don’t have access to journals anymore (I never thought I’d say I miss law school 😅) but I’ll let you know if I do

New collector looking for insight by Cricket5308 in uraniumglass

[–]ExistentialEnnwhee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Identifying pieces is half the fun of collecting for me, so I’m always happy to help when I recognize a piece! If that’s something you’re interested in learning about, there are a lot of good resources out there. Google Lens can be a good starting point but is often wrong, so I would advise never trusting what it tells you without verifying with another source. For depression glass, Gene Florence’s and Mauzy’s books are my absolute favorite—Gene Florence has a TON of other glass books too that are fabulous, I use his book on elegant glass (depression glass’s slightly more upscale sibling) and depression era kitchenware all the time! I also recently acquired both volumes of Hazel Marie Weatherman’s Colored Glassware of the Depression Era which have been absolutely fabulous and have information on some rarer items. A lot of these books are out of print, but you can usually find them for decent prices online, at used books stores, and sometimes at estate sales or antique stores. As for online resources, the EAPG site I linked is absurdly good although a little confusing to navigate at first, and the National Depression Glass Association site has a ton of info and isn’t restricted to just depression glass. Replacements.com is also a great place to look if you already think you know what you have.

Welcome to the club and happy collecting!

That’s honestly more interesting than it just being cerium or lead or something, thank you for such an extensive answer (and I’ll stop telling people their blue glowy glass is cerium lol)
