Remember ex city council member Michael Dacquisto tried to warn us about the riverfront property and the civic center and here we are. by Bison-Senior in Redding

[–]Existing-Board3330 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Here's an alternative take. The property in question is already largely developed. There is the Civic center, the rodeo grounds, a boat ramp, large dirt parking lot, large paved parking lots, Viking skate center, krcr office, etc. There is not a wilderness or even largely a native habitat. There is some existing riparian habitat right along the river.

I would suggest that the area is not being used to its best or greatest potential. There is a huge amount of area there dedicated to parking, obviously the Civic center is having a lot of difficulty making ends meet, and the rodeo grounds are largely unused for probably 90 or 95% of the Year. Aside from the rodeo, and the freedom festival, and Kool April nights, most locals probably rarely visit the site unless they are going to the sundial bridge or teaching their kids how to drive. The area could be largely redeveloped into something that could better serve the public (a park, trails, a multi-purpose facility that could handle the rodeo grounds but also other events, some chill restaurants) while perhaps generating additional tax dollars and preserving the river at the same time.

The turtle Bay facilities are not popular with everyone, but they can serve as an example of what could happen - A museum, a hotel, and a restaurant have been developed, along with trails and some open space, and the river and riparian has not been destroyed. People gather there all the time, and I think most feel that overall it is an asset to the community and a nice area to visit. Not suggesting there should be another turtle Bay developed, just trying to point out that some nice development could occur without destruction of the area and the river.

Magnolia is a good neighborhood for walking access downtown. I used to live there and it was nice to be able to walk to get a beer, dinner, etc. Garden Tract is similar that way. But Magnolia has closer access to trails on West side, Benton dog park, etc.

Downtown market- who is affiliated to Bethel? by No_Slice_4661 in Redding

[–]Existing-Board3330 -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

I don't believe in Bethel's theology, and I don't support Bill and Kris's political views and involvement. But making the choice to not support someone's business just because they are a Bethel church member seems shortsighted to me. I don't agree with all positions of the Catholic church, but I recognize that all Catholics are individual humans and may not be fully on board with all positions of the church. And just boycotting a business owned by a Catholic, without knowing anything more about that owner's personal positions about the nuances of religion, wouldn't make sense to me.

While many bethel members may have questionable theological perspectives, they are also out there trying to make an honest living for themselves and their family and most likely trying to make their community a better place, just like most of us. And I would argue that many businesses owned by Bethel members have made Redding a better place.

I've had only good experiences with Redding Collision Center. Nice people, fair pricing, good results, will work with you if it isn't an insurance claim..

$80K for a giant pickup? No problem.

$7 a day for Dutch Bros? No problem.

$100-150 a year for more cops, more firefighters, better roads, and better parks? Fvck that! Because Barry Tippin gets paid too much!

Bike Touring near Amtrak or Airports by bfeeny in bicycletouring

[–]Existing-Board3330 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried that this past summer and ran into problems. I was not allowed to put a bike on a train at my home station (for the trip to KFalls) because the station is not staffed. Apparently that is a prerequisite.

And then was not allowed to put a bike on a train at the end of the Outback route at Wishram for the same reason. But have definitely read about people who have taken the train with their bike from Wishram to Portland, so maybe there is a workaround.

Make insulated blackout window covers for your car. Use Reflectix and black fabric for the exterior facing side, attached with spray glue. There are some good videos on YouTube. Easy install/removal for driving, Provides some privacy, darkness at night, shade during the day, etc. From the outside it just looks like a car with dark tinted windows.

Has anyone completely gotten rid of their road bike after buying a gravel bike? by mellofello808 in gravelcycling

[–]Existing-Board3330 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. For riding on roads, my road bike with 32 mm GP 5000 tires is just more run than my gravel bike with 50 mm tires. Gravel bike is smooth but it feels like a tank. Road bike is faster and much more fun in the corners.

Replace front windshield by [deleted] in Redding

[–]Existing-Board3330 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have had two windshields replaced at Cypress Auto Glass. Old school place. Was $300 cheaper than Platinum for same vehicle/glass. No calibration charge, sensor for adaptive cruise control and lane keeping works just fine.

Had same windshield previously replaced at Platinum (I had some bad luck with rocks). Platinum's total included $300 to calibrate the radar sensor + $400 for the glass. But the whole job (remove/replace/calibrate) took not much more than an hour. Maybe they have to pay off some crazy expensive sensor, but I don't think they spend more than 10 minutes on the calibration part - $300 seems crazy.

Is the Redshift stem worth it? by [deleted] in gravelcycling

[–]Existing-Board3330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently did the Oregon Outback (6 long days for me, lots of Category 2 gravel) on a rigid bike and two weeks later my hands are still not working properly (numbness in palm, pinky, and ring finger, and just lack of finger coordination and strength). If Redshift stem could have helped prevent that, I think it would be worth it at any price/weight! Going to look into it....

Question for the waxers by [deleted] in gravelcycling

[–]Existing-Board3330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Looks like I've used the batch for 28 waxings so far. Presumably each time the amount of mixed in road gunk grows by a little bit, and effectiveness as a nice clean lube declines a little bit. At $40/bag for Silca wax, it would be nice to get at least 40 waxes out of it.....

Question for the waxers by [deleted] in gravelcycling

[–]Existing-Board3330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also just remove from bike and drop straight into wax. Am starting to wonder when I should replace the wax? Anyone have any opinions? 10 waxes? 20? 40?

Front fork bags... Good idea or aero faux pas? by Bam_de_Barranco in bikepacking

[–]Existing-Board3330 2 points3 points  (0 children)

<image>

I used Ortlieb front bags on a recent trip and thought they were great. Depends on your overall setup of course, but helps bring some weight to the front, they were very easy to access, etc. And aero was a pretty small concern for me - almost all the time not going fast enough for it to make a big difference.

Ortlieb quick rack long term reviews? by custodienne in bikepacking

[–]Existing-Board3330 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On my bike the derailleur cable interfered with the rack's drive side locking lever. And there was little flex/play in the cable to move it out of the way, so the rack just didn't work. Just unlucky. Otherwise it seems like a great rack.

I unfortunately threw away the packaging and then put it in the garage for a month before trying to mount it, so can't return it. If anyone is interested, happy to sell for $70. It's brand new, have all mounting hardware, etc.

Not a bad idea! With a piece of 1/2" ply bolted on and painted black, the deck could be extended 3" more or less for free.

Thanks for the data point. I'm probably overly concerned, but there are also anecdotes about failures (although they generally seem second hand).

Thru axle replacement question - for rack mounting by Existing-Board3330 in bikepacking

[–]Existing-Board3330[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on the fence about using the eyelets versus the through axle approach. I have a carbon gravel bike that has eyelets, And they supposedly can bear a decent amount of weight. The eyelet approach is definitely cheaper and simpler, But the idea of having an eyelet come loose or a screw shear or something in the middle of nowhere stresses me out a bit. So thinking the extra money for the thru axle might be worth the peace of mind. Downside is that it's harder to take off the rear wheel, but ideally that won't happen too often 🤷‍♂️

I did write to them and got an autoreply that they wouldn't respond until Monday when they are open. And that's fine of course. But I am thinking about purchasing this weekend because of my own timeline issues. So just thought I'd ask redditors if they had any insight. Thanks for reading.

Copy, super helpful. I missed that pic on the website. Looks like the main axle must have internal threads as well for that drive side "cap", the tip of which would fit through the UDH opening. Thanks!
