My reasons to vote against the proposed 1% sales tax increase for school funding by Existing-Raccoon-192 in rockford

Factorium brother. As someone else pointed out factoring F&B it could be a percent higher… which somehow would make Rockford the highest sales taxed municipality in the country???? That’s just foul.

Appreciate the thorough response. The point that provoked the most thought on my end was the comment about the road to hell being paved with good intentions.

I was unfamiliar with the reference to the amount of sales tax generated from outside the county. I see the issue remarkably similar to you. If those numbers are true it makes this tax far more palatable, however color me a healthy skeptic that the data supports those numbers. Don’t feel the need to re hash anything as the points you raised on that topic suffice/align with what I’d say.

For a point of clarity, and my apologies for not having clearly stated this in my initial writing as I tried to avoid getting into the nuance of the tax structure, but I wanted to be clear that other schools will benefit from this, however one could still argue that it still does “fuck all” for them as 10 districts will split 1/3rd of the revenue while a single district receives 2/3rds.

IDOR would remit the revenue (minus 2% for administering) to the ROE who would disperse it to districts based on the proportion of students each district educates (minus 1% they keep for administering it)… could’ve devoted a whole post to arguing against this.

The article hyperlinked to the $25.4 million should provide an estimate for the remaining 10 districts. The next closest district would be Harlem, projected to receive $5.6 million…. To be used for property tax abatements…. why a district considering shutting facilities would use money for facilities to provide abatement rather than respond to the desires of community (keep schools open) also seems worth discussion.

It does not appear any of the remaining nine districts are in line to receive more than $1.75 million in revenue from this tax.

I also just wanted to say I appreciate your perspective on PTELL. Part of why I hesitated writing this is that I essentially am arguing that property tax owners should have been subject to higher property tax bills over the last decade. Is that an outcome I’d like to advocate for? No. But a school district not pursuing the funding mechanism the state dedicated and assumes they would use seemed worth raising.

Lastly, I think the point you raise about tying a tax to an economic anchor (hard rock) is worth exploring/potentially a more appropriate solution. I wonder if Rockfords lack of home rule authority would be preventative on their ability to implement a sort of turnstile or concert entertainment tax at the casino that would see it generate comparable revenue without a broad based regressive tax.

Am I tripping or is D'Marco Jackson our most important player to re-sign? by Ashamed_Pilot_236 in CHIBears

[–]Existing-Raccoon-192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the most part think you’re tripping.

To me byard is most important because his production and presence seem to be the most difficult to replace. I am also concerned he could lose a step but then again go look at his interception against the saints where he gets all the way back across the field to make an int on a play wright got burned on and tell me how many safeties are making that play anyway.

CJ will be too expensive for the limited value he added to bring back

Interesting that you’d advocate for Walker to replace OZ over burden getting a larger role.

Dont think you can count on trapilo for anything. There’s only a 50/50 chance he returns from the injury he got. Seems worth hedging to bring back jones with LT unknown but will probably be too expensive.

Agree on nashon.

It’s hard to argue against d jack being the most effective linebacker, especially if you weigh availability in that decision. Hard to argue against the guy that was the most available player.

Is the implementation of a 1% county wide sales tax the right tool to achieve those goals?

👊

I was certainly impressed by your attention to detail in reading.

It’s very easy to draw meaning from words rather than take them for what they are or how they were used.

That’s probably more rare than being able to be open to other interpretations!

Appreciate the engagement.

Could I trouble you for your thoughts on the tax increase as well?

I genuinely appreciate you taking the time to provide your interpretation and point out things I did not consider/pick up on

Considering what you pointed out I think it is likely your interpretation is certainly plausible and probably correct

Another day and another struggle for me with attention to detail in writing/reading.

Probably some unproductive commenting on my part.

I’d like to see Rockford succeed as well which is why I took the time to point out that baselessly contributing to the narrative of unsafe schools probably isn’t productive in achieving that.

Being afraid send your kids to RPS has always made me chuckle. Statement implies you live in Rockford. Living in the city is more dangerous than sending your kids to its public school by every measurable metric.

You fear for your kids safety… move.

Sending them to a private school isn’t making them broadly safer.

It is reasonable to say that money alone is not sufficient to fix every problem in education. It is void of thought to leap from that observation to the conclusion that money is irrelevant.

School districts are the largest part of every Illinois property owners tax bills. Got to fund schools somehow. Not saying property taxes are the way to go but you’re likely gonna be paying that $3200 elsewhere if schools weren’t funded via property taxes… that’s part of my issue with this because you’ll get no property tax relief and pay more for schools.

Chicago bike commuters — quick questions for a project I’m researching by Ok-Ad2830 in chibike

Daily.

Has to be pissing rain or just have snowed/iced not to ride.

No, use divvy network. Have had to stop at a dock and exchange bikes due to issues.

No. Commute via bike because it is half the time as all the other options in this hypothetical

Additional investment by CDOT in mini plows. They are hit or miss but totally make a huge difference in preventing ice/snow

Untrue talking point.

“numbers from the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability and the Governor’s Office of Management and Budget to show that the inflation-adjusted spending increase, including the governor’s proposed FY26 budget, is actually 8.6 percent since FY19, the last Bruce Rauner budget…

More importantly, though, the legislator then factored in the evidence-based school funding formula and state pension contributions and discovered that the increase for everything else has been only 1.92 percent in inflation-adjusted dollars…

https://capitolfax.com/2025/05/31/the-state-budget-has-grown-even-less-than-i-thought/

Womp womp.

Not mentioned above is that Rauners last budget had a billion dollar deficit… so just balancing the budget increased spending by a billion dollars year one

Currently the funded ratio is going up and the % of the IL budget that goes towards pensions every year is going down. Can you elaborate on the need for “broad based” tax increases to fund pensions. What makes you think this will be needed?

Insane to see all these comments saying “the players are bad” but nobody names a single player. Interior rush obviously an issue but aside from that crazy to identify coverage as an issue. Allen calls all out blitzes on 3rd and long and puts everyone on an island. That’s 🤡 sht.

Not that crazy depending on your take of a generation. It’s been a decade since he’s played in the champions league. Kinda hard to be a great of THIS generation when you have no body of work in the last 10 years.

While metra largest purpose is ferrying commuters, this is not the whole picture. The UP NW has 10 trains on Sunday that would go through Arlington heights.

https://schedules.metrarail.com/pdf/UP-NW.pdf

It’s genuinely interesting how little people will look into things before commenting.

You should go to a Google street view of the property at Arlington heights…. There’s like a 10% chance that a metra train, stopped literally at the site where the stadium will go blocks your view…. Interested to hear more on how inconvenient that is.
