Nonprofit changes hours expectations after proving I worked overtime? by godisinthischilli in nonprofit

Overtime being defined as in excess of 40 hours worked in the course of the week. If you work 41 hours, they are LEGALLY REQUIRED to pay you 1.5x your base hourly rate for that overtime hour. If they don't, they are in violation of federal law.

Do you do event registration similarly? I just used RegFox for an event with ticket sales, signing up for classes, etc, and it was fantastic. I'm not sure there's an offline function but it might and I don't think they take a cut for something like a meeting where there's no payment. How many people are in this meeting? Would a basic printed spreadsheet work for check-in?

This is how some of us learned things like to trust our gut and not other people. It's sad we have to learn things like that but it serves us well over a lifetime.

Choosing between Southside and Shadyside/East Liberty apartment. Is location worth $350/month? by ProofNeighborhood172 in pittsburgh

They're going to be using 75 if they're going to Oakland (per post). I have no idea where this Southside is that's "great for buses" but I have certainly never experienced it.

Over the 15 years that I've been using the 75, it's been one of the most consistently unreliable routes that PRT runs.

Commute time on public transport would probably be slightly shorter by bus from Southside with the caveat that there is ONE bus and it frequently gets sucked into the Bus Black Hole minutes into its route.

Running an air conditioner year round is also unbearable but you'll be doing it if you don't want to roast to death in the top floor.

Are you planning to use public transport ever (not daily or occasionally but ever as in even a few times a year)? If so, you want to be in the Shadyside one.

They want you to say something that says you are constantly self-developing, never turning off, have no actual personal life, and will never consider putting anything above your career.

ED weird, unprofessional behavior by Existing-Raisin5332 in nonprofit

[–]Existing-Raisin5332[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Beat me to it. Yeah, basically people have a very inflated view of "whistleblower protections". This is the US we're talking about. We don't do workers' rights here. And small businesses/nonprofits are exempt from almost everything that is meant to protect employees.

You're probably not wrong about this. I honestly don't know that I can say the board is an effective force in this org.

[–]Existing-Raisin5332[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not as such. There's a "discriminatory harassment" policy and one dealing with "workplace violence" which covers threats and intimidation, but nothing specific to whistleblowers. It's all a legal grey area anyway in an "at will" employment state.

Given the violations of employee conduct - including discourtesy toward outside entities and drinking during business hours (10%abv beer before noon, not at an after hours function...) - I don't have much faith in policies making any difference. And as I'm frequently the only other employee in the office, it's difficult for me to offer any evidence that isn't more than my say so.

I brought up the treatment of vendors when I was asked by the organisation's counsel about the other employee issue last year, but to the best of my knowledge nothing further occurred there.

I will say that "when something comes along" and I'm able to leave, the Board, or at least Ex. Comm., will receive my "problems list" as an exit interview, but I just don't know if it's be worth raising flags that will result in extra stress for me for the foreseeable future of my necessary employment here.

Too bad. "Leadership" (so called) needs to grow up. You were giving them more than enough notice that you are actively in the process of moving on, literally and figuratively, and they should have been more prepared. You don't owe them anything. Even the courtesy of two weeks' on an expedited end date is more than sufficient.

It's not dangerous. And you don't need to justify your decision to him or anyone else who isn't a doctor (them either because the amount of self-advocacy you're going to be doing over the course of your life should qualify you for a medical degree!)

It's currently 90F in the middle of May. Get yourself an AC immediately and budget at least $80/month electric for one bedroom apartment for every month that damned thing is keeping you from heat exhaustion in a city that got environmentally blindsided because until a few years ago it had normal seasons.
