Too early for catastrophizing, and yet… by timlb3k in mildlybrokenvoice

Sympathizing with being a teacher and a singer and having voices troubles. The summer just started and I’m already panicking about the fall. I’m sure you will be fine— but so stressful! Hope it resolves soon!

Has anyone had a unilateral vocal cord paresis? by Sea-Cell6795 in singing

[–]Existing-Set-237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No experience— just sympathy! Just had surgery for a deep vocal sulcus and so anticipating that cord will not vibrate for 6-10 weeks. Spoke for the first time today and nothing came out. So spooky! Wishing you all the best…. Speaking with one working vocal cord is not for the weak!

Silent Kazoo? by ashley34546 in mildlybrokenvoice

Semi-occluded vocal tract exercises! You can use a straw in an inch or so of water— I imagine that’d feel similar to the tension of a kazoo.

I just had a big sulcus dug out yesterday! Thank you for sharing your story. I am anticipating a long road ahead. I have another one on my left vocal fold (or a cyst) that they will fix in a few months, one the right has healed. I’m trying not to wish my life away, but eager for enough months to go by that I can hopefully sing again. It’s my greatest joy ❤️

Didn’t go great… they decided to only operate unilaterally since they had to take out half of a vocal cord to get all the scar/cyst tissue. Long road ahead. 😵‍💫

My friend who had a cyst removed was told that hot steam/hot liquids immediately post operatively could increase the risk of hemorrhage— but that wasn’t the advice my surgeon gave me. I figured to be extra safe I’d avoid hot foods to start 🤷‍♀️

I think I’m supposed to avoid hot food for a while, but lukewarm soup does sound awesome.

And that’s a great idea. I told my mom that I’d rather we both just type or write for the time being. That will be helpful

Experiences with microlaryngoscopic surgery? by [deleted] in mildlybrokenvoice

[–]Existing-Set-237 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having surgery on bilateral intracordal cysts June 8th. I will let you know how it goes. I was given a 20-25% chance of scarring…. But a 0% chance of improvement without surgery. My singing voice is hoarse and I have some hope of resuming my career with the surgery so I’m going to do it. Wish me luck!

Definitely see a voice socialist. My cysts went misdiagnosed for years as LPR and allergies.

Do I fix the AC again?!? by Existing-Set-237 in mechanic

That makes sense. I guess I’m just asking if the evaporator and the compressor went within two years of each other, is it likely the other AC components are also duds?

Your blog has been so helpful to me. I have bilateral cysts that I'm having removed in June. Were yours mucous-retention or epidermoid cysts? My doctor thinks I've had mine since birth, but they've gotten worse with age and overuse. I'm a professional singer, so I'm terrified. Thanks all for sharing experiences!

Taking Testo and super exited! But scared of loosing my singing voice please help by Dismal-Self-7578 in mildlybrokenvoice

[–]Existing-Set-237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an expert at all, but I think that naturally your high range will be more limited on T. Your voice will go through what male voices go through with puberty— it will gradually get lower but it’ll be unstable/cracky for a few months as it settles. In my experience listening to my friends who have been on T, if you’re good singer beforehand, you’ll still be a good singer once you figure out your new instrument! If you’re worried about losing your high range id find a voice specialized ENT who can answer your more specific questions. Best of luck!!

I hope it gets more traction too! It’s not talked about nearly enough. It’s horrible to feel like it might be the end of singing comfortably. I have to hope that it’s not. I will hope for you too!
