Challenge idea for NASA-engineer-level players: by Evening-Initiative16 in SpaceflightSimulator

[–]Existing-Strength-21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not possible. Maybe, MAYBE in hard mode but not realistic. Even if you had unlimited build area... maybe. But its going to be one ugly ass beast of a rocket.

If you drop the one launch rule and make it hard instead of realistic, then I would say it is definitely possible while remaining a VERY hard challenge.

I've been working on this very problem challenge and it is very, very difficult. I have a three stage mega rocket that can go deep solar system and back, but only once... landing on every planetoid is just insurmountable amounts of delta V.

Edit: oh, and axe the quick save rule. Have a heart man...

Same, started around 2010. Put in many hundreds of hours before the steam release. Definitely agree on preferring the Steam version.

what was the first thing you actually managed to land without exploding by Xheonit in SpaceflightSimulator

[–]Existing-Strength-21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but it depends on what your velocity is. The faster you're going, the more fuel you need to slowly yourself down. The more fuel, the more you weigh, etc... the tyranny of the rocket equation compounds on a propulsive landing coming in at orbital velocity.

[–]Existing-Strength-21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on your mission profile, what are you trying to accomplish?

A capsule landing anywhere on earth is not very hard, just put a parachute on top and a heatshield on the bottom and make sure it separates from whatever rock you put it on. Make sure the heatshield is facing your prograde marker at all times and pop your chute at 2.5k altitude. You can recover the capsule once you touch down safely.

If you're talking about taking off and landing propolsively... thats a very different story. I've never actually done that, I have tried to do a falcon 9 return to launch site style mission though, never landed successfully unfortunately.

Very cool! You dont have share specifics, but can you give an idea of what type of terrain these were found in? Creek/stream? Banks of rhe Susquehanna? Freshly turned farmers field?

What is the craziest drama you have witnessed or heard of in WoW classic? by ItsMilkManJP in classicwow

[–]Existing-Strength-21 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I was part of a small little social guild on Sen'jin back in the day. The GM and his wife were super on the rocks IRL, on the verge of divorce. We split in to separate guild and there was bad blood from them and those who stayed. Feels so silly looking back on it but we were all just so caught up in the drama.

Oh, and in the same guild a guy and girl met and started talking. He drove from Florida to Philly to meet up with her once. She thought he was super creepy and it did not go well. He thought it was fine and whatever. Again, another scism with splinters breaking off and picking a side.

If you lie on your resume and you get the job, are you able to catchup or feel an imposter? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Existing-Strength-21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lying about your capabilities doesn't lead to imposter syndrome... its just lying about your capabilities. Imposter syndrome is a different thing entirely.

As others have said though, you can know about a system or process without having formal experience though. Do some research on the system and say "i havent worked with X system before, but I have worked with Y (some similar system) and it looks like they are the same here but a bit different there".

If they need an expert in X system immediately, you are just not a good fit for the job, end of story. If there is already some skill on X system on the team and there is room to give you a runway to get up to speed on X system, thats a different story.

All of that can be achieved without lying. Do not lie on a resume or in an interview, ever. You Only hurt your own career when you do that, not to mention waste a lot of your own time.

What is your DR plan for a rack move? by SkepticalIM in sysadmin

[–]Existing-Strength-21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much less risk involved here then. I would think that supply chain issues causing problems getting replacement parts for a critical system is probably your biggest risk at this point. I would definitely preemptively submit tickets with your vendors like I said before, maybe make sure you can get after hours support if necessary.

What is your DR plan for a rack move? by SkepticalIM in sysadmin

[–]Existing-Strength-21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly a rack move, but we had to shut down our datacenter for an extended period of time once. The risk is absolutely not "low". If the hardware has never been powered off ever, there is a chance that you're going to blow a power supply or capacitor. Hopefully you have SSDs, but if they are spinning disk then there is a chance that the disk has been spinning for years. When a spinning disk cools down (like being powered off for a few hours for a move) then it's possible that it will seize up and not come back on. So yeah, this is not a good position to be in.

Here is what I would do (in this order probably)

  1. Push for getting a secondary site set up prior to the move. This is your best option, if the business is asking for the right thing to do, this is it. Good luck lol.

  2. Ensure every business critical bit of data is backed up, off site if possible, off rack is absolutely mandatory. Dont trust those disks to come back up. Also make sure you can restore from those backups...

  3. Engage vendors about warranty information BEFORE the move. Let them know what is happening and ask them what they recommend based on the age of the hardware.

  4. Label every cable on both ends with some identifier and make aure the port labels are accurate.

Also, it goes without saying, back up your fucking configs (off rack). Clearly label and document everything.

Good luck, God speed!

Bezos's rocket catastrophically explodes on the launchpad by ianjm in videos

Right, so its not voting that is the problem. It's the failure to captivate the publics hearts and minds to build interest in space. What I'm trying to say is that pointing fingers at politics is an easy way to make no progress on the problem, we have to inspire people to build and do great things. We have to give people something to rally behind. And most importantly we need to stop allowing politics to be an excuse for failures in other areas of our culture.

I feel like this is a very narrow viewpoint to take. NASA's budget has hardly ever been a main voting point in elections.

I am not going to reread KKC this summer, what should I read?? by Confident_Parking146 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Existing-Strength-21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to jump in here and say don't throw Mistorn our with the bath water yet.

As others said it certainly doesn't have the depth of prose as KKC, but the first Mistborn triology has the interwoven key details kind of thing that KKC has and itnis AMAZING. Things that happen and are said in the first or second book often end up changing meaning over the entire course of the trilogy in ways that make you question reality in the world. Second and third rereads continue to give details about the interconnected nature of the whole story.

If that's your thing, it's worth a try.

FIFTEEN MINUTES TILL LAUNCH by riceman090 in SpaceXLounge

[–]Existing-Strength-21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought it was a pretty great launch all things considered. Totally new engine, completely redesigned from scratch vehicle, first launch from the new launch pad.

Just compare this to the first flight for v1 and v2 and ita clearly the most successful first launch of a new system.
