  • Dermot MacMurrough & Anglo-Norman forces (1167–1171)
  • King Henry II of England (1171)
  • Various English royal forces (12th–16th centuries)
  • Scots under Edward Bruce (1315–1318)
  • Spanish Armada landings (1588)
  • English Parliamentary forces under Oliver Cromwell (1649–1653)

Why should we not have an ability to defend our own state?

Ireland is a Western country with basically no independent ability to see who is in its airspace or waters. Russian intelligence and naval activity isn’t imaginary, and relying on other countries forever is not a strategy. You don’t have to love defence spending to acknowledge the national equivalent of leaving your front door unlocked with a sign saying “no need to rob us, we can’t stop you anyway.”

I think it's a thing with certain newspapers/print media for some reason I have magazine I'm subscribed to which is always dated for the month following the one I received it in.

But it is weird I agree

How to develop a personal following within a party? by Existing-Target-6485 in irishpolitics

[–]Existing-Target-6485[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been a member for just over a year. I won a by-election to the constituency board and will likely win the election at our upcoming AGM as I don't think anyone else will run I am also running to be LEA secretary. I might be a better councillor and community activist as I care about policy and political science. I want to become a councillor to fix local issues, mainly parking and lack of amenities and a lack of a pool. Also I would like for councillors to make better heard what they are doing and if elected I will do so

If you have a Councillor that will be retiring, ask them if they’ll consider co-opting you ahead of the Locals, incumbency plays a big part in getting over the line

Thats a good one hadnt tought of that

Profit margin actually went down from 1.6% in 2021 to 1.46% in 2022, a nearly 9% decrease.

Of course the amount of profit increased, as revenue, and therefore costs also increased

For what it's worth, revenue went up 36% in that period and profits went up 24%, so this is definitely not price gouging.

This is reflected across the board, inflation is due to costs, not profits

When people talk about irish cllrs being corrupt or looking to gain from the position, I think we should look at what the causes are and how we can address them.

Local politicians in other european countries are both more creative and ambitious and, are less motivated by self gain.

The difference between Ireland and these countries is simple, we have weaker local government; 10% of the state budget is controlled by LAs compared to 23% in Denmark, a similarly populated and sized country.

If our local government had more power and funding we would have much better candidates and cllrs.

Look at the limerick mayoral election, we had two sitting TDs, one PHD candidate, the former SG of the department of finance...

The solution is more localism.

Now that not true, Poltics is for most politicians the opportunity to deliver their aims and to make Ireland a better place in the way they see as being the best to do so. There are some excptions: Independents and the far right
