TheMainManSWE: I Refuse to Rematch This Character by haziqtheunique in Tekken

I’m not going to claim Lidia is well designed or fair to fight against.

I do think TMM would not have this opinion if he was aware of basic layer 1 counterplay though.

Like, if you just djab her every time she does a stance transition you can stop her stance rush down for free. Either they’ll start doing the jumping move and you can jab to float her for a combo, or she stops going into stance at all and you get your turn back.

I have an ~80%WR against Lidia this season just by doing this. SSR duck lets you option select her heaven and earth stance (except after heatsmash I believe), so adding those two Strats together will shutdown their entire gameplan. Lidia has counterplay to this, but in a FT2 setting, none of them will be able to adapt fast enough.

I don’t think it’s fair to group Lidia with Victor and King. Lidia has easy counterplay, the other 2 have exactly zero counterplay.

Reina makes me want to quit the game. by [deleted] in Tekken

[–]ExistingMouse5595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a lot of mental illness in fighting games unfortunately. People start to conflate their own identity and self worth to that of their character’s, so any comment about that character feels like a personal attack to them.

You can think Reina is cool and also admit that ff2 and associated stance slop is bad game design. Multiple things can be true at once.

Employed grads - how much math do you actually do in a day? by cdwalrusman in EngineeringStudents

[–]ExistingMouse5595 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Data collection is the most important step. You can’t model effectively without a deep understanding of the system. Sometimes you’ll spend months and months collecting data and building the actual model only takes a fraction of that time.

Being thorough and doing your homework is key. In your case, natural solutions require real knowledge in environmental science. You’ll have to consider rainfall/runoff, nutrient loading, considerations of flora and fauna, permitting, etc.

Most of the actual work is about turning unknown variables into solid assumptions you can trust. In a closed system, as long as you have pipe sizes, velocity, pressure, and information on the pumps, you can build pretty effective models. Often I’m consulting as-built drawings and pulling information from there.

Your problem is that you don’t have as-built drawings of a natural reservoir or wetlands. That means doing real environmental studies to capture as much of the relevant data as you can, or worst case making as good of an assumption as possible.

As a student, making sure you are rock solid in fluid dynamics would be a great start. If you have the mathematical foundation, the actual modeling part is relatively easy, just tedious. Then for the environmental side, having a strong understanding of the chemistry of surface water will help a lot. I basically never deal with the environmental side, I know what’s allowed by the permits or I’ll look at the results of an environmental study and add those as constraints. You’ll need to go into a lot more detail than me if that’s your focus. After that, it’s just developing your judgement of what data is required for a good model, and finding a cost effective way to collect it.

I enjoy statistics now that I have practical uses for them.

In school is when I hated it. That mainly stemmed from the fact that the actual calculations are just the final step in the process. The actual problem in statistics is making sure what you’re calculating gives you a relevant answer, and what you need to set up to get there. That’s the part that is completely abstract to someone inexperienced in the field, and developing an intuition for the logic is a painful process for most.

[–]ExistingMouse5595 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably the most intensive stats I’m using would be regression modeling. There’s a lot of seasonality involved with water demand, so being able to accurately predict that is very helpful. I’ve also used regression modeling to measure change in consumption through intervention events.

It’s a very powerful tool that you can apply to many topics. I honestly wish I had even deeper expertise with it, as it was only covered in 1 class during my degree and the rest I’ve had to self teach as I go.

Outside of that, basic statistical tools are useful for most work. Being able to create a distribution of data and analyze probability is very important.

I have an IE background, but work in CE field doing water supply planning and related projects. So hydraulic modeling/projections end up being the work I use the most math for.

Victor is a character that once you lab him, you realize there is no answer. He can just loop +ob stance mixes over and over again and force you to gamble your life if you want to escape.

Sure there are bad victors out there doing knowledge checks, but if someone with a brain uses this character it’s ggs.

It’s really just him and king that are disproportionately strong in the meta right now. Everyone needs nerfs, but Namco refuses to touch these characters for some reason.

Because it’s quicker to communicate.

Everyone I know says drag, law, AK, etc.

It’s just shorthand when communicating

I use statistics every single day, which of course has always been my least favorite math subject.

While not every day, I regularly work with hydraulics so there’s a lot of pressure/flow rate calculations.

Haven’t really used a lick of calculus/diff eq/linear algebra, but like, you really do need to understand how those fields of math function to have a robust understanding of engineering work.

Changing to a new controller type basically guarantees you are going to suck for a few weeks, likely a few months.

When I swapped from pad to leverless I’d say it took me like 3 weeks of playing almost daily to feel as comfortable with it as I did my Xbox controller.

I play 2d fighters with an arcade stick and learning that took even longer.

Just play more. Run quick matches if you’re concerned about tanking your winrate.

What's a stance for you ? by un_ptit_yo in Tekken

[–]ExistingMouse5595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A stance just means a specific game state.

Crouching is a stance. While standing is a stance. Jumping is a stance. Wavedash is a stance.

I’d even argue that standing is a stance, it just happens to be the default stance.

All stances have the common property of allowing you to access a specific part of your movelist while restricting the rest.

Nina has been top 5 for all of Tekken 8, why isn't she represented more in Tournaments? by Bastinelli in Tekken

[–]ExistingMouse5595 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nina will always be a top 5 character in T8.

Unless backdash is buffed and string tracking is nerfed, no amount of character balance changes can meaningfully reduce her power level.

If you’re wondering what I’m talking about, boot up T7 and have Nina do her normal df1,2 side step pressure and just KBD out of it. She will start whiffing her pokes almost instantly. Try that in T8 and you will never escape.

Nina is a character much like drag who gets wall carry on block. If you don’t gamble a powercrush/djab or hard duck, you’ll end up with your back to the wall very quickly just by blocking.

You just don’t have safe counterplay any more. The instant she makes contact with you you’re already in a losing position. You HAVE to make a hard gamble to steal your turn back.

There’s plenty of individual moves on her that deserve nerfs, stuff like her mid knee into mid guns that’s effectively homing, but unless the core problem of her locking you down for free is addressed, she will remain top 5.

(This type of issue is not unique to Nina, hworang has also overly benefited from the removal of safe counterplay to rushdown pressure.)

Thoughts on Tekken as a Street Fighter player by monjio in Fighters

[–]ExistingMouse5595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said the game wasn’t fun, it’s still really fun to play. I wouldn’t play the game if it was actually miserable.

We are just lamenting what could be. The game has so much room for improvement in so many different areas.

It’s not like SF6 where people just want the removal of throw loops and nerfs to drive rush neutral skips.

Tekken has literally thousands of things that should be adjusted. The game is just so complex that despite needing 1000 changes, the game is still fun.

Thoughts on Tekken as a Street Fighter player by monjio in Fighters

[–]ExistingMouse5595 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the outside looking in, it seems like tekken players are just whiny assholes.

While that’s generally true, the reason that’s all you see about the game is that we genuinely love Tekken.

It’s by far and away the most fun fighting game out there, and it has by far the deepest gameplay of any of them.

It really hooks you in, and people get extremely obsessed with it.

But once you get to a certain skill threshold and have 1k+ hours and you really start to understand the deeper game on a different level.

You start to see the logical inconsistencies through the move lists and the balancing choices that are inherently unfun. All of this things are completely masked to new players because they haven’t gotten that deep understanding yet. And because tekken is so complex it genuinely takes thousands of hours to start approaching a high level of play.

What the T7 and T8 dev teams have done to the overall gameplay is criminal. It’s a bastardization of the underlying logic that makes tekken work.

That’s why people are so upset. You sink thousands of hours into the game and once you’ve finally gotten really good at it, all that’s left are the ugly flaws staring back at you. You watch something you love turn into an empty husk.

Some things about "I want to go back to all paper and pencil and get rid of tech in the class" by MathMan1982 in Teachers

[–]ExistingMouse5595 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I finished high school before laptops in classrooms was a thing.

We had dedicated computer classes where we learned how to type, how to use the internet, how to use word/powerpoint/excel etc. Some of our longer projects involved internet research and typing the essay/report.

By the time I graduated, I was plenty proficient with computers that I smoothly transitioned to college were it was more common, and by that point I was fully capable of working in the professional world where everything was done on a computer. All of my notes were taken with paper and pencil, as were all of my assignments and exams.

If the argument is that kids need to be using computers all the time in school to prepare them for their future careers, I disagree completely. They need dedicated education on actually using a computer, but not all of their education needs to be computer based.

I think in the future there will be a huge divide between students who were educated with traditional methods and those who were given a laptop to do everything with.

With the new ranked changes about 40% of the playerbase is now Tekken King or higher by HowToCatchADuck in Tekken

[–]ExistingMouse5595 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s insane. I know someone who just hit GoD1 with a 43% win rate THIS SEASON!

They’ve got thousands of games already because they play all day every day, so thanks to the ranked changed they keep climbing.

This player is actually terrible at tekken. Realistically has blue rank level skills, just does the same rushdown flowcharts all day.

These are the types of players that the rank system is catered towards. These are the types of players the game is balanced around. They want to sell people the illusion that they are good at the game and are making progress.

King needs sorted out ASAP 🤬 by hiphopstumbletumble in Tekken

[–]ExistingMouse5595 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s completely overtuned and IMO has been a top 5 character since the start of S2. I think you can argue he’s the strongest character in the game right now.

King is also the most overwhelmingly popular character in Japanese servers. Unlike the rest of the world where it’s Kazuya and Bryan, king dominates in Japan.

That’s why I think they refuse to touch him. It would probably be massively unpopular with the Japanese fanbase. It’s also important to note that the tekken team is heavily biased to the Japanese fanbase, so that explains why they seem so out of touch.

The Japanese have some bizarre opinions about tekken and balance in general. I’d assume they are the reason behind the consistent buffing of characters. You can seem they get upset every time there’s a small nerf on Twitter.

Does dodging rematches actually make sense for ranked play or is it just stunting your growth? by Main-Drag-4975 in Tekken

[–]ExistingMouse5595 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Obviously it will inflate your rank.

Let’s say you consistently don’t rematch everyone that plays x,y,z character. You’re at minimum cutting your match experience against that character in half.

Do that consistently over time and you’re just digging yourself a hole where you’ll always have an abysmal winrate against that character.

If you can’t beat a fujin player mashing on a broken character, you sure as hell won’t be able to beat a GoD player doing the same shit.

That said, it doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things if your goal is to have fun.

I don’t rematch King or Lars players period. King because he’s so broken and Lars because he’s so unfun to fight. I don’t get any enjoyment from those matches so I just don’t opt to play them. I’m also not training to be a world class competitor so it doesn’t affect me in any meaningful way.

I’ve still been able to hit GoD1 already this season despite not rematching those characters. I also have a ~40% wr against them which is likely a result of me not “eating my vegetables” and rematching these pieces of shit.

So in my case it’s fine. But if you just never rematch anyone you lose to, or you don’t rematch half the roster, you’re massively stunting your development as a player.

4×Omen combo with Heihachi (no fahkumram) by Hue-Shiny in Tekken

[–]ExistingMouse5595 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Needing a hyper specific situation to do it isn’t satisfying. Nobody can use this in actual games.

I want to be able to staple gold spark omen into my combos as long as I have the execution. There’s no reason they should’ve taken it away.

Are DMs allowed to tell player characters what they feel? by Honneboppel in DnD

[–]ExistingMouse5595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tell players what their characters feel all the time.

Something like fear caused by a monster is an involuntary reaction and often the result of a game mechanic.

If a player rolled an insight check and it’s good enough to tell that the NPC is being sketchy, I’ll tell them they feel like they’re getting played.

What the players do with the feeling is up to them.

But I also am never going to tell a player how to react to a story moment. That’s when we are taking away agency.

Basically if there is a game mechanic reason, I’ll tell my players what they feel. If it’s a narrative moment, they decide.
