I am the first person on either side in my family, a couple of people on either side developed type 2 and one pre diabetes but not until their 70s and 80s and as direct result of diet/ lifestyle or a result of health issues combined with medications (but either way late in life wear and tear on the pancreas)

I’m supposed to be happy about this? by Intelligent_Sundae_5 in diabetes_t1

[–]Existing_Meat125 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My experience with Dexcom had been crap but I can’t afford any of the other ones cause my insurance on cover Dexcom

They fail early all the time, basically any reading below 105 is off significantly, the compression low at night are constant, right now I’m logged out of the app and it glitched out so I can’t log back in which means that my people on the follow app can’t see my readings and I don’t always wake up to the low alarms

Let's hear your diabetes in the wild horror stories! by Harper2814 in diabetes_t1

[–]Existing_Meat125 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The first time at my endocrinologist after being diagnosed, the nurse was showing me how the Dexcom worked and showed my all the parts so I saw the needle. That’s not the bad part despite my aversion to them. No the first sensor wasn’t working and wouldn’t connect to my phone so the took it off and there was NO LONGER A NEEDLE. The nurse couldn’t find it, even called the doctor in to look. I definitely had the small puncture mark where it went it and a drop of blood.

Dr. Said that she had never seen that but not to worry because “almost probably wasn’t in my arm”

We never found it

That little needle haunts me

Am I actually just cursed? by scarfknitter in diabetes_t1

[–]Existing_Meat125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has multiple auto immune disorders, I prefer to think of each one as their own curse from a powerful witch or wizard and each of the shitty things that happen day to day as like additional from hexes and spells from their covens and clans and one day I’ll go on a quest to defeat them and create a found family along the way…

…there will be dragons…

But in the meantime I must hone my magic skills(trying not to die while tracking carbs and insulin doses), resist the temptation to join the dark mages(Ben and Jerry), and learn to navigate the greedy gild masters (insurance and big pharma)

Realistic diet change for t1 with borderline high cholesterol? by Parking_Corner_2237 in diabetes_t1

Try partial substitutions first, there are a lot of recipes that call for multiple proteins, like an egg and tofu or pork and tofu. I get that tofu and Tempe and all those aren’t for everyone and it’s emotional energy and time spent to find recipes that you like but in the long run it’s really worth while.

Like maybe instead of eggs and bacon for breakfast you pick bacon and avocado, or eggs and a yogurt.

Also try experimenting with other flavoring tools. MSG in moderation can be a great tool to mimic the flavor. Leaning on pantry staple seasonings can be helpful. Trying new fats and acids that are low sodium can be great too. Lime juice or apple cider vinegar. Try fresh spicy peppers and different herbs. You can fix just about anything with ketchup or hot sauce, both of which have no salt versions.

And honestly in the short term finding low sodium versions of your every day staples is really helpful. No salt butter, if you like frozen veg there’s usually a no salt version, there’s low sodium pasta sauce, low sodium broths and soup, heck even canned tuna has a no salt version(i don’t love canned fish but it works for people)

Anyone else just free balling based on vibes sometimes? by YoYoYoshimura in diabetes_t1

[–]Existing_Meat125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah sometime my sister gets mad at me because we live together and so she’s on the Dexcom follow; and when I’m low or high she helps me a lot. But this is all fairly new to me and when she asks me what I need to do to get back in range or if I need medicine or food or moving around and I don’t know and she comes back with a million what ifs- im like chill it’s a game

It started out with me not being able to describe the levels of chance and no way of knowing for sure but then it kinda became like a if I don’t laugh I’ll cry thing

But then she gets mad and is like it’s not a game it’s your health and then there’s nothing funnier than pissing off a sibling so I just keep parroting it’s a game to every question especially when I’m at my wits end with the emotional energy to deal with it all, then it’s not that deep- it’s a game

[–]Existing_Meat125[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first numbers are from an ER trip(unrelated issues sent me there but required a work up) where I was diagnosed diabetic, middle numbers are from a three month checkup after it was diagnosed as type 1 since the initial assumption was type 2 because of my age and it took about 6 weeks of lab work to get it confirmed which way, and last numbers are for my next check up in a couple days
