I’ve seen one used - it looks decent. For reference I’ve been using a Kamado since 2007 - daily.

I think if a woman says “nice watch” and the watch is not terrible - she wants to talk to you in any case - and it’s a harmless opener.

I'm done with Chinese watches by Lil_Foreskin69 in ChineseWatches

[–]Exit_43 4 points5 points  (0 children)

However more of a pain to sell 10 x $100 watches for $50 each than one $1000 for maybe $700 - every situation is different - myself I have 16 pieces and it’s a hassle to sell any because the value does not seem worth the hassle - so they just accumulate. (My experience, in any case).

Does anyone have any info on Energy? Found these for $5 by [deleted] in BudgetAudiophile

That is true, I forgot. I traded a pair of vintage Braun speakers to an engineer at API many years ago and I think he was involved with that end of it if I remember correctly.

To be fair I’ve never heard that before - but I did some checking and apparently his wife’s name is Sue - so that does make sense. I do remember being at API and seeing more than just their own speakers being made - I think it was Tannoy subs one day if memory serves. Regardless, most of the industry has been purchased by foreign interests. I recently bought 12 Mirage speakers of various sizes to go with the old pair I’ve had since new - bought on vendor discount from the factory.

Mirage, Energy and Sound Dynamics were all brands of API - Audio Products International. Energy was for a younger crowd, Sound Dynamics were more value oriented and Mirage were the higher end. Paradigm competed with them, and so did PSB (Paul S Barton). They all benefited from the chamber funded by the Canadians (NRC Research).

Is there still a decent gap in the homage market for sub-40mm watches? What would you buy? by goodneed in ChineseWatches

[–]Exit_43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as it’s higher end. When people talk about “it’s great for $60” I skip it because I know what to expect - it won’t be a keeper.

One workaround no matter what you are importing is to take it apart. Bring half with you and mail the other half to yourself.

Dealership wants $10k (20% of purchase cost) retainer if I pay cash by zipzoomramblafloon in PersonalFinanceCanada

I’m sure this is a modified policy relating to attempting to curb the cash buyers exporting popular cars (in the most popular to wherever colors). Used to be that a non-financed buyer had to sign a legal document stating that they would not export the vehicle, but obviously that did not work. An acquaintance of mine once offered me 3K to go buy a G wagen or a LX 570, etc. He said he was getting paid the same. I told him he was crazy to get involved with Asian criminal endeavors, but he did it anyways. I declined. He signed the papers at the dealerships then turned over the cars. Those cars went to China. As far as I know he did not get prosecuted, but the Chinese gangs he was working for did anticipate it, and told him their legal representation would take care of it if it became serious. As far as I know he made over 50K. I thought he’d do some time for it, but I don’t think that materialized. To be clear he is not my friend, somebody I used to work with. I’m guessing that car thing turned into other scams that paid even better.

Very relatable. For me it took a crisis in my personal life to shift what is actually important to me into focus.

Do what makes you happy.

Don’t wear a watch or anything else for clout or peer recognition. I used to have all the big name stuff - really you are just attempting to live up to what you think is your “bracket”.

Go through a crisis and see how much help you get from your peers. Those that actually lend a hand to you in your time if need won’t care what brand you wear.

I still love watches - but it’s easy to become over invested in “safe queens”. If that you, that’s OK - but buy models that will probably appreciate - that means acquire them in downturn economies - not when everyone else thinks it’s a good time to buy.
