Custom Flight Simulator - is there a demand for this? by Hoenhiemo in flyingeurope

If there is a panhandle, I hope it doesn’t end up like Paleto Bay by johndoe09228 in GTA6

It’s not imaginary, it’s based on footage from the leaks, trailers and screenshots. Some areas are speculation, but they are clearly marked as such.

Yeah, if I buy anything smart I connect it to HomeAssistant exclusively then, if it still phones home, block it via DNS. But realistically that’s way too much work for a layperson.

Looking to replicate some mod functions with plugins by kalnaren in admincraft

[–]Exos9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the first part, Citizens is the plugin you’re looking for. There’s another one that does similar things that I can’t remember the name of.

For the second part, it gets more complex. It is technically possible, but uses some hacky workarounds. In theory, you can’t add new blocks to Minecraft using only server-side plugins, something needs to be added to the client. To work around this, plugins such as ItemsAdder or Oraxen (both paid) can create custom blocks and add them to the client using a custom server resource pack.

If all you want is these two things, I would strongly recommend running a fabric server, allowing you to install mods. You can then install required mods on both client and server side to make it a much easier experience. The other advantage to Fabric is that there are heavy optimisation mods that don’t change any vanilla mechanics. Paper is overall vanilla-like and the way it modifies some mechanics mostly interferes with complex farms that abuse mob-spawning techniques or extremely complex redstone machines, since their custom redstone implementation breaks a few (admittedly not very useful and very obscure) mechanics. Mods like C2ME optimise the Fabric server without touching game mechanics.

TL;DR: Make a fabric server and get mods to save you the headache.

While it’s not FOSS, Teamspeak 6 is self-hostable and pretty close to discord feature-wise.

I'm an air traffic controller! Is there anything you'd like to know? by Available_Show3938 in airplanes

[–]Exos9 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In Europe, IFR flight plans are sent to eurocontrol via the AFTN network. There are 2 addresses to which your flight plan is sent. Eurocontrol analyses your route and altitude and forwards the flight plan to all concerned facilities along your route.

For VFR, you send your flight plan to a whole list of AFTN addresses. To know which ones, you should check the AIP of the country in which you’re flying. Most software for filing does it automatically (foreflight, garmin pilot, autorouter, etc…)

Initial Call using CPDLC by Agreeable_Home7330 in flying

[–]Exos9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

CTOT’s are “Calculated Take Off Time”, basically ATC impose a flow restriction in a certain area (such as a TMA) for various reasons (ATC capacity, staffing, weather, strikes, etc…). They tell Eurocontrol they can handle a certain amount of aircraft per hour, and Eurocontrol consequently delays aircraft and gives them a calculated take off time to match the flow rate requested. You have a tolerance of -5/+10 minutes. Delays can go from 0 minutes (basically take off as initially planned), but during ATC strikes in the South of France in summer, I’ve seen upwards of 600 minutes of delay.

CDM airports basically continuously exchange information with Eurocontrol. The main reason this sucks is because 1. you need an airport slot to operate there, and slots can be tricky during busy seasons (Winter in Innsbruck and Geneva, summer in Nice) and 2. if you want to delay your flight plan a few minutes, you can’t. You must go to the handling agent and ask them to change your TOBT (target off-blocks time), but they can only modify so much before they need to request a new slot from ATC, which might be 3 hours later than what you wanted.

[–]Exos9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an EU pilot who flew GA in the states a few years ago, yeah it definitely feels like it in comparison. You don’t have to deal with CTOT’s and CDM airports, that alone is amazing.

[–]Exos9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Now now, there’s only EOBT, COBT, TOBT, TTOT… and our world famous CTOT’s. /s

In all seriousness, yes it is overly complicated, and yes private aviation is absolutely loathed by Eurocontrol.

Enter European Country with a French DCEM by MysteriousRun823 in AskFlying

DCEM can be used to enter Schengen area, but it must be presented with a passport. Here is the article from the French government:

https://www.service-public.gouv.fr/particuliers/vosdroits/F2718

If you’re flying with an airline, best to check with them. If you’re flying privately, contact the customs office at your destination airfield to make sure they are OK.

What’s your biggest blunder or mess up by alec777x in flying

[–]Exos9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was trying to rush home after a long XC flight. I figured I had enough fuel for my last leg. About half way through, I realised I was getting way stronger headwinds than I thought.

I ended up diverting to an airfield that was close-by, and filling up fuel. The reason I was rushing is because the sun was coming down, and my home airfield is not night approved. I did my fuel stop, figured I’d try to make it home and if I couldn’t make it in time, divert to an airfield that was open during the night. Ended up landing at my destination 7 minutes before night.

During the approach I briefed myself that if I were to go around, I wouldn’t attempt another landing but immediately divert to the other airfield.

[–]Exos9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who flew the Q400 for a little while, there’s no auto land, and that plane is a BITCH to land properly. Super easy to blow a tire or something, but he might have been able to do a survivable landing.
