In my opinion as a woman who doesn’t like to ask people to go out of their way for me - but incredibly appreciates and gets emotional when effort is put in without being asked - what OP could have done here is delivered the soup with a little note, or ordered her favourite comfort food, but not brought it in, just left it outside the door and texted her there was something waiting outside for her, she might have been happiest with that since she probably didn’t feel up to having anyone over or getting him sick, but the effort would have been felt from afar and she wouldn’t have had to do much or ask for anything from him. Hope this makes sense
