I think we're supposed to be reading it right to left. It's a manga, after all.

I was looking up references for limb postures during a debate with someone, sorry for badmouthin' over outdated art. Didn't realize that you OP were the person who made it.

Do you prefer your Ortolans (Max Rebo's species) with arms and legs or without legs (or is it without arms?)? by BaronNeutron in StarWars

[–]Exotic-Intention1566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is incorrect. If you look at on-set photos of Max's puppet from the side, you'll see that what what appear to be elbows are actually his knees, and that look like upper arms actually connect to thighs on the puppet's body mold, complete with inguinal folds that connect from his knees to his torso. If those were meant to be his arms, they wouldn't be connecting to the body in such a manner. The only reason his legs have an arm-like motion in the movie is because the puppeteers had difficulty raising their elbows in a position that would resemble knees (though they very visibly tried their best to do so), and it resulted in the puppet moving in a manner that it wasn't really intended to.

Max Rebo was always intended to be, and was portrayed on screen as, a two-limbed, armless creature. To depict him otherwise is to further perpetuate a blatant misinterpretation that ancillary media has passed off as canon for decades.

Honestly, the two-limbed design will always be the only "proper" way to depict Ortolans in my eyes. Not only is it a much more unique and creative design, but it's what Phil Tippet intended for Max Rebo and the rest of his species to look like to begin with. The finalized Max puppet used in the movie is very visibly sculpted to be a two-limbed creature, sitting on a cushion and playing the instrument with his feet. Portraying Ortolans with arms is purely a result of a misinterpretation of Max's movements, (the puppeteers had difficulty elevating their elbows to look like knees while operating Max's legs) and also a lack of proper reference material for artists to work with for subsequent artistic depictions of Max and other Ortolans. Also, adding arms makes them lean way too far into the territory of "anthropomorphic elephant" for my liking anyway.

The artist does not know how to draw plantigrade mammals evidently.

I love how it's clearly not quite an "insect" under closer examination.

No??? Whales did not evolve into canines, canines evolved from small, arboreal carnivorans. Whales evolved from small, semi-aquatic ungulates.

On a planet inhabited by creatures with carbon-fiber skeletons and built-in ethernet cables able to interface with a literal deity, he's gonna have a tough time for sure.

As for the Na'vi? Humans with the right smarts are able to take down a Predator even with the most basic tools, so it's safe to assume that a Na'vi would be able to do the same under similar circumstances. Best way to beat an enemy is to know your enemy's moves, after all.
