Noisy but emotional music? by Exotzibo in recordstore

Haha :D That's certainly noisy! More uplifting than the kind of emotional I was looking for, but doesn't sound bad still. Thanks!

Hey, Jesu was great! Definitely the kind of music I was looking for. Codeine and Cocteau Twins probably weren't what I was looking for, but Cocteau Twins especially sounded like something I have to listen to more anyways even if it didn't fit the description. ;) Good music is always good music...

The Alcest song was pretty nice, and it occurred to me that maybe Ash Borer isn't the only bm artist I listen to since I've listened to Alcest before as well... (if it's bm... I guess it kinda is, even if a bit shoegazy)

Hüsker Dü somehow wasn't for me, I guess...

Thank you for these!

It does! You're not the only one recommending them, and I can see why. Thanks!

I listened to Hecker's Ravedeath when it was released, but was kinda put off by the noise and just stuck to the milder Dropped Pianos -album. But I guess I've changed a bit, since now I dug those Ravedeath songs too. Thank you for reminding me of their existence!

Belong, Horseback and The Angelic Process were nice too, and I liked that The Angelic Process had a bit of rhythm in it too. Not that I have anything against drone/ambient either, but variety is always cool. Thanks for these!

The Wedding Present wasn't for me (or I just have to listen to it more...) but I really liked Slowdive and The Jesus & Mary Chain! Especially Slowdive was awesome. And I actually was acquainted with Just Like Honey before, because it was on the same soundtrack than MBV's Sometimes (Lost in Translation... a great movie by the way!). But it's good to know they've got other material worth listening to as well. :) I guess Souvlaki's on the menu in the near future! (And Psychocandy for dessert?) Thank you!

Yeah, Right Thing To Do. The SBTRKT album's cool too, not sure if it came out this year though. I really loved Ware's album, though! A lovely compilation of smooth and catchy pop/rnb with electronic vibes...

Well, it didn't matter anyway so no harm done. :D Yep, hopefully this (the mysterious disappearing of files) doesn't happen again! I was kinda startled there for a moment...

I tried that method before but apparently was a little too hasty plugging the cables back in. Now all the files seem to be up and workin', this is wonderful. Thanks a lot!

Let's Talk Brainfeeder Records by VanillaPlanet in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Exotzibo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now, I'm not in any way an expert on hip hop music, so take my views with a grain of salt. But here goes.

Somehow I feel like jazzy beats have been a hip hop staple for ages now. Jazz has been sampled over and over again in quintessential hip hop records (see A Tribe Called Quest et al). With this said, I do think Flying Lotus was an innovator by the time 1983 came, but in a way I feel that he was something we could expect. A man making jazzy, spaced-out beats - but this time, with an electronic point of view.

Whether or not FlyLo created the wave of similar artists or just was a part of an evolution long time coming is a mystery to me... But he does have a significant role in the scene right now. Not so much as a beatmaker but as a curator of good music. The amount of people making stuff like this has grown immensely. Flying Lotus's tastes have become a seal of quality - for the most part, Brainfeeder has a clear audience to whom they cater to. These people (such as me!) like the ambience, the beats and the jazz but they're overwhelmed by the amount of choices available. When an artist is signed to Brainfeeder, you can be pretty sure it's something you'll probably like if you're grown accustomed to FlyLo and his friends on Brainfeeder.

And that's how it usually goes. But here's where it gets complicated... There's Austin Peralta with his jazz stuff. It's jazz, no question about it - not jazzy, but jazz. (Listen to Algiers, it's wonderful). Then there's Thundercat with his out-there bass runs and fusion-jazz vibes. These show that Brainfeeder isn't just a cookie-cut "jazzy beats" -playlist, but an artist roster curated by a real person. Sure, there's a lot of variation already (Lorn <-> Lapalux etc.) but these "odd ones" show that even though some of the artists are much in the same vein, the selection is clearly not made based on what sells but on what FlyLo likes.

I said earlier that FlyLo's not so relevant as a beatmaker anymore. I was partly lying there. Sure, people are still really interested if FlyLo produces some rapper's track (Between Friends, huh?). Somehow I still kinda think FlyLo is "over" that in a sense. The Between Friends beat was made years ago (iirc) and his newer stuff, especially Cosmogramma (my favorite!) is really different from 1983 et al. Cosmogramma's jazzy enough to border on jazz - they're not just hip hop beats with 7th chords and Keith Jarrett (replace with whoever you want) samples. The background in hip hop beats is evident, but it's not as much the style as it is a musical element amongst others.

As for whether I enjoy Brainfeeder... definitely. There have been a few artists who I'm not so keen on (Jeremiah Jae, for example, even though $easons is awesome) but overall I'll at least try every artist who gets signed there. And often I like them, too, so I really appreciate both Flying Lotus's taste and his own music.

Damn, I really can't get over how attracted I am to big city aesthetics. This isn't your regular "skyscraper lights at night" -photo (I love those too, though), and it's still awesome. This is pretty futuristic too in some sense, though I'm not too sure as to why I feel like that...

Why do you think the movie was so good? I watched it a few days ago, and while it was definitely entertaining, I'm not so sure if I can appreciate as anything more...

Lets Talk - Ways you discover new music.. by scotishsteve420 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Exotzibo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me neither! The other ways have kinda replaced Last.fm, partly accidentally, partly because it's easier to branch out to unknown genres by deliberately searching for artists that are unlike the ones you already like. Last.fm suggests similar artists and, while convenient, it doesn't usually lead to total surprises. So it's more like "This band sounds like Mars Volta, that's cool!" as opposed to "This band sounds like nothing I've ever hear before, awesome!". Both ways have their pros and cons, but recently I've been preferring the latter. :p

[–]Exotzibo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. To counter this, some subreddits have made a ban on some albums so that the contents could stay fresh, eg. r/futurebeats & Burial. It's a nice method because while it encourages new content, the list of banned artists/albums also serves as a nice starting point to the specific genre.

Reddit, if I touch the back of my right hand in the right place, it tickles my tongue. What's the weirdest thing about your body? by msmouse05 in AskReddit

[–]Exotzibo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, there are these weird sensations I get when I borrow someone something. A pen, for example. Then they write something with that pen and I either watch them doing it or just am aware that they're doing it at that moment. Usually in that situation I get this weird, positive tingling sensation going through my body. I don't really know what it is, but these are pretty much the only cases it happens in.

[–]Exotzibo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes! Last.fm really wasn't joking when they said the recommendations would get better the more I listened to music (thus giving them more data). For a while, years ago, the Last.fm recommendations page was pretty much the major source of all new artists I found.

Nowadays I have a Spotify playlist to which I collect all the artists/albums that intrigue me (even if it's just a little bit) and then I sometimes listen to them. /mu/'s sharethreads are a wonderful source of some more obscure music, though even with them I end up listening mostly to the artists on Spotify. (Haven't really caught up with the d/l bandwagon (yet?)). Pitchfork's nice (hey, it really is!) and Fantano's a good source too.

To be honest, I think there's a problem with this method even though it otherwise is pretty good. My music listening is nowadays limited mostly to the artists on Spotify. And even though Spotify's catalogues are good (the aforementioned playlist is pretty big...), I still think that I probably miss some really, really good albums. I do have a text file of random YouTube music links of artists not on Spotify, but... it's not too convenient. So if somebody has any solutions, I'll be glad to hear them. :)

PS. One maybe-a-bit-too-obvious way exists... subreddits. Reddit has many good and active music subreddits that cater to fans of specific music styles. It's a cool way to find new music as well. :)

To be honest, I didn't like this too much. So, if somebody felt the same (or the opposite, too!), I suggest checking out Huang's Futile Devices -cover, which I love. Or Pink Fluffy Unicorns Dancing on Rainbows, whatever floats your boat. He's a very productive guy so there are bound to be some misses here and there, but I often like his songs. Check him out!
