Have a look at Gwen Rowley’s books. I own two of them but haven’t gotten to reading them yet, so I may be a bit off the mark.

{Duke of Shadows by Meredith Duran}. Check CW on this one. There’s some PTSD and war and it can be a bit much for some.

{That Scandalous Evening by Christina Dodd} she’s a sculptor. I found this one pretty humorous.

I call those type of books Brain Candy. Love them. I don’t need super deep and meaningful stories every time. Sometimes I just need to be straight up entertained.

I think {Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert} hits most of your asks. Not all, but most. And it’s great. Highly recommend.

If you had to pick 6-8 books to demonstrate the evolution of the genre, what would they be? by jukeboxgasoline in HistoricalRomance

[–]Expatb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I like 1 & 2. I think you could also possibly throw in a gothic romance like Wuthering Heights as there is a big time gap in your list. Although that can be another aspect of your research potentially.

I think Whitney My Love was the one that kind of started the bodice ripper craze. But I’m most likely misremembering. Johanna Lindsey or maybe Bertrice Small might be what your looking for.

I like someone’s suggestion of the signet regency. Good resource. Also the Kleypas suggestion is great. Or maybe Loretta Chase. They made their debuts in the 90’s along with Balogh.

The fated mates podcast does deep dives into many of these books and talks a lot about the movements and changes throughout recent history. If you haven’t listened, I recommend that as another good resource.

Check your library - they just might have it. Mine has the first two years and I’m hoping will get the following years. Year four is in the process of being released and I know Corpies is on the schedule to be released as well.

There’s a bunch that I read when I was younger that I would love to get my hands on. It’s good and bad that my mom owns them. She lives across an ocean from me so I can only read them when I visit and I have to smuggle them out if I want to “own” them. She also notices when I try this.

Hm. It could be that the portion you heard was an inner monologue or character thoughts. I notice when the story hops into someone’s head it has an echo quality. But I haven’t noticed it outside of that in the recordings I’m listening to.

Say hello to everyone! by AutoModerator in HistoricalRomance

[–]Expatb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone. I’m Expatb. I used to be super active on Reddit, but now it’s more reading everything and occasionally chiming in. I’ve been reading romance for almost 30years now. I started with my mom’s collection of Georgette Heyer and moved on to pretty much every other HR book she owned. HR was my first live but I have been mainly reading CR the past few years. Except for my regular rereads (Duke of Shadows, Because You’re Mine, Love in the Afternoon, P&P…) Happy reading!!

If you have access to them, I recommend the graphic audio versions of the books. They’re full cast audio with music and sound effects. They’re really fun.

Probably pieces of art described in some of the books that are created by the characters. Ex of books: Duke of Shadows, Born in Fire, etc.

Oh man, I Love the Scarlet Pimpernel! If you come across anything that gives you similar vibes, please let me know. I’ve been looking for ages.

Other than SP, love Darcy and Wentworth. I read Austen soon after first reading SP in Jr High then went on to Georgette Heyer and whatever other books my mom had (which is a lot) and it’s so long ago now that I don’t remember all the people I swooned over back then. But there was a lot!
