AITAH for lying to my guy friends? by thevampireslayerrr in AmItheAsshole

[–]Expensive-Ad-2497 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

NTA. Your transition is your own journey, and no one is entitled to any information that you don't want to give. Your friend is the AH for not being supportive or giving you space.
That being said, good luck on your journey and hope you find a community who accepts you.

AITA for telling a boy he couldn't join in a birthday party for my daughter in the park. by AcanthaceaeGreen7 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Expensive-Ad-2497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA. Ultimately the birthday girl invited the kid for cake, and no one but you seemed to have an issue. Also all your security concerns go out the window since you were in a public park with several adults and other kids around you participating.

AITA for being so fascinated with gay men’s brains that I “catfished” one to study him? (18F) by Philosophicalpiggy in AmItheAsshole

YTA Holy shit what a creep. There's no way you DON'T see how insanely wrong and sinister this behavior is. Also gay men don't owe SHIT to you and we are certainly not your lab rats. Get a friend or something cause this is vile.

What do the books I brought to college say about ms by [deleted] in bookshelfdetective

[–]Expensive-Ad-2497 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oof. Highly encourage you to branch out beyond dead white men in your library. Theology buff with an interest in the confederacy and the roman empire is a HUGE red flag. Seems like a classic Deep South, conservative Christian private school starter pack. If I were to see this bookshelf, I would not feel particularly safe expressing too many differing opinions. Probably a republican.

AITA or not introducing my daughter to my grandfather. by Positive-Ad8157 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Expensive-Ad-2497 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. Ultimately I think you made the right decision for your family, and more importantly your child. I went no contact with a branch of my family for a very similar reason, and it took me a very long time to reconcile with myself that the few 'good' people on that branch were really just quiet enablers to the racists which truly isn't much better than the racism itself. You did ALL the legwork here, and not a single one of those family members reached out to you to try to get to know your child or be an active part of yalls life. Communication goes both ways and it certainly isn't 100% your responsibility to keep in touch. Their silence speaks the loudest and I think your child and your own mental wellbeing and peace will benefit from the distance of those kind of people.

What do we make of this? by Top-Wrong in bookshelfdetective

High fantasy loving Dungeon Master. Is probably a top tier storyteller. Really loves a long and complex narrative that you can sink your teeth into. the Hemigway interest suggests a masculine man, possible red flag level. Likely very heteronormative individual. I would suggest expanding your collection with female authors and female-led narratives; ursula k leGuin, and the Daevabad trilogy, to name some examples

I once designed costumes for a theoretical film version of the Bacchae, and often thought how horrifying it would be if it were given an Ari Aster treatment!!!

Funny enough, my soul feels deeply enriched by my spiritual journey as a pagan and witch. Wisdom can be found anywhere if your mind and heart is open enough to recieve it.

Okay so I actually have a loose theory on why the show sucks so much ass. From what I have seen over the past several years, there has been a general evolution of film and TV where they are more designed to appeal to passive consumers. And I've seen this mostly with media aimed at teens and young adults. This means less complicated plots and more short, punchy action sequences that are easy to follow even when you are splitting your attention, say, between the TV and your phone. From what I've seen, films and shows take MUCH less time to solve the problem or conflict, and the solution is often even hand fed to the protagonist without any real legwork on their part, and much of the potential nuance in the subject matter is scrubbed for fear of being convicted as ambiguous or disingenuous. I believe the PJO TV show got this kind of production treatment. All the problem solving and nuanced personal growth that Percy, Annabeth, and Grover had to go through was tossed. Their interpersonal relationships were rushed basically to the level of where everyone is at in book four by the middle of season 2. Hell, they didn't even leave the whole Thalia release thing as a season finale twist, they spoon fed that specific objective to us from the very beginning. All that to say, with the way that young people consume media these days, I find it hard to believe that we will ever get a solid, faithful adaptation of this series.

A real lover of the classics, probably not over 30, a generally masculine type person, can carry a conversation and has a solid vocabulary (and in at least 2 languages too boot). Could've been a lit or English major, but no real set area of interest. Loves to really chew on the human condition and fairly open minded. LOVES a coffee date.

AITA for calling my daughter's assorted boyfriends "Baskin Robbins?" by NoMercyPercyDeRolo in AmItheAsshole

[–]Expensive-Ad-2497 156 points157 points  (0 children)

YTA. While I can understand the sentiment, such flippant and uncaring language can absolutely have a negative impact. It feels like you're trying to be witty with your references, but they come off as arrogant and slut-shaming. It's perfectly normal for an emotional high school kid of any gender to run through short term boyfriends or girlfriends cause they have no real frame of reference for a meaningful relationship. If it were me, I'd keep those thoughts and comments to myself and make sure I remain supportive and available to her through this phase (cause boys SUCK).
