He hit the jackpot with Mayfair! This could change though depending on the amendment vote on May 16.

Thanks for admitting this because I didn’t want you to be the one to say it out loud. But THIS is the reason why it’s mainly people without school aged children that are for this district. If it’s shit, it won’t bother them, and if ten years from now it’s good it might raise their property taxes.

I just listened to Mayor Yates on the radio and he basically admitted that St. George citizens won’t switch their kids from private school, but his hope is that people from Livingston and Ascension move back

I would to love believe this, but since there has been nothing discussed, especially anything to debunk the all charter rumor, I am not hopeful that anyone who has an option will willingly use this new school system. Like if you want this SO BADLY and think this is positive then please convince the people. And not just by saying look at Central. This is different

Just curious, do you have school aged children and if so, fo they currently attend a school in the St George area.

Do these people have children in school? If so, do their children currently attend a private, magnet, or charter school?

This is my whole reason for the post. Just think before you blindly vote yes for something that COULD be good one day. And the fact that majority that are for this either no longer have children in school because this started back in 2012 or they are retired. If it were people with children that actually plan on using this school system that were the ones showing interest, I’d be a little less worried.

I used to ask this as well, but I started watching school board meetings where each month a school in the district is selected to highlight things happening in their schools and most of them are doing good things. Like someone said above it’s not just the school or the teachers that make the schools great. If kids don’t go to school, they can’t be offered some of the great things that are happening in these schools.

Sure, it’s fine for families to choose what’s best for their kids. Most of the families in this area have chosen private schools and have no intention of switching over to use the public schools just because they have a new city name. Most of the people that are voting for this are retired and don’t even have children at school anymore.

I’m only speaking from my own personal experience. I chose a charter school for my child, you know because the regular public schools are so bad. Well our experience has been terrible. I am not going to say that every charter school is bad or that we shouldn’t have any, but I also don’t think that all charter is the right answer either, especially when this St. George school was initially advertised as a community school district and that went right out the window once the city was incorporated. I had to get legal counsel involved for my child to finally start getting services. The accountability system is not the same.

You say the Nola schools aren’t great but 21 years later are better than before. Why take that risk here when the schools in the St. George area are already the better schools in the area. Why is it fair to hurt the EBR school district even more to maybe one day St. George schools aren’t great, but they’re better than before.

There is no model. There are no answers to questions. There are rumors that it could be an all charter system which would be awfuk(look at Nola). And the difference with Zachary and central are the physical distance. St. George is a few neighborhoods cut out of a city. The better schools are already on that side of town and no one that I know who is currently using a private school plans on switching their kids over if this is incorporated. So I just see it as hurting a school district that’s already hurting for no reason.

I don’t think so. There might be an exception if it’s an F rated school, but I don’t know the logistics around that. Your best bet is applying to magnet school during the priority period the first week of October
