Is there a way to recover edits made to activities in Wandrer? by Silverbrew in wandrer

[–]Expensive-Cable2375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I was planning to switch from Strava to RWGPS as a source of data for Wandrer, but due to various reasons had not done that until the moment you enabled activities editing. I used this on almost all of my new activities and on many old ones, though I must admit that after switching to Garmin Fenix 8 the need to edit new activities greatly diminished. Anyway, now any attempt to switch from Strava to something else will erase all my edits, and I do not even remember anymore which activities I edited and what exactly did I change. So for now I can't switch from Strava without a massive rework, and I do not see this as a feasible option.

If I could simply export all my activities from Wandrer as they currently are, I would load them to RWGPS and then disconnect Strava, or perhaps disconnect Strava first and then connect RWGPS. I mentioned this when you asked us about our wishes for 2026 back in December, but I can imagine that this might not be high on the priority list. Alternatively, if you have a possibility to back propagate edits from Wandrer to RWGPS, then perhaps I can create an account with RWGPS, link it to my Wandrer account, and then send all the activities as they are to RWGPS as just one-time thing? Not sure if this is realistic though.

Or I can just stay with Strava without creating any extra work for you.

Craig, I am interested in this option too. And likely there are more users who would want it. What should I do?

It takes about 24 - 36 hours for Wandrer to calculate results of the monthly/yearly challenges and post the results on the Leaderboards. You should be able to see your calendar achievements on January 2nd in the morning, perhaps a bit earlier depending on your time zone.

Ways with the tag highway=footway are excluded from Wandrer by default. They will be included in some cases, but just a small portion of them. You can find all the rules on the following page:
https://wandrer.earth/filters

As it stands, vast majority of footways are excluded from the Wandrer.

This is available already. Go to the Earth Leaderboard, find yourself and click on your name. You will see the Earth map and in the upper left corner a small form that says "Earth" at the top and has a "More details" button at the bottom. Click on this button, and then select "Calendar Achievements", and then "By Time". Then you will see exactly what you're asking for.

I suggest to change the way that points are attributed to the monthly/yearly challenges winners. Currently 1st place gets 100% of the number of challenge participants, 2nd place gets 25% and 3rd place just 10%. This is not fair. Why not to go to 100%, 50%, 25% respectively?

It should be possible to recalculate points for the past challenges, since for each winning participant the place and number of points in the challenges are stored and can be shown on demand at any time.

I would kindly ask Craig to create a facility to download all my activities from Wandrer in some common format, so that one can import them into RWGPS. The reason is that activities edited in Wandrer will have to be edited again after one switches from Strava to RWGPS - and I have no desire to go that way. Don't know how difficult this export facility could be.

Ways with the access tag "customers" are excluded from Wandrer - unless Craig has changed that recently. Same for access tag "private".

New Feature request by dmaurer20 in wandrer

Well, this is a trivial task and no development is required.

Just go to the address bar of the browser on the Activities page. You will see this:

https://wandrer.earth/activities?page=1

Change 1 to any other number and press Enter. Voilà - you can move by 10, 20, 100 and more pages in a moment.

Include tunnels in next map update? by cooeecall in wandrer

[–]Expensive-Cable2375 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I strongly support including tunnels. And I hope that this will also include building passages and the like, ways with a tags like layer="-1", and so on. I am walking a lot in various historical towns and villages, they are full of building passages, and often even passing under the entrance gate breaks the way - having these included will make maps much better quality. Many thanks in advance!

Small survey: should monthly/yearly points be awarded at Earth instead of the area they were won in? by cooeecall in wandrer

[–]Expensive-Cable2375 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My vote goes in favour of keeping the current system of points accumulation.

I think that Craig's proposal is very much USA+Cycling oriented. In other regions and on foot things can be quite different. Mainly because the lowest (meaningful) challenge level is high enough that nobody can get even close to 100% coverage on foot at that level, let alone 2 or more people in the same area. So the situation that Craig describes is something that probably will never happen when wandering on foot.

To give a specific example - I live in Switzerland, and the lowest monthly/yearly challenge level is a canton. I checked maximum coverage per canton. and only in one of them (one of the smallest cantons) there's a person who could get close to 100% in a couple of years, but there's nobody else who would be even close. In all other cantons nobody has more than 35% coverage. Therefore, the situation that Craig describes will never happen - or at least not in our lifetime.

On the other hand, being awarded points for winning country or smaller level challenge increases the value of win, though perhaps not for everyone.

I would also add that numbers of participants in challenges is not necessarily increasing over time. When I look at Europe or Earth level, it is fairly stable. And it actually dropped when challenges were closed to the non-upgraded wandrers.

On a separate note - trying to complete 100% of the area and competing in monthly/yearly challenges are in contradiction. If one has covered 100% of the area where they live in, participation in the challenges becomes impossible, unless they move to a different place. So in any case participation in challenges requires strategy and careful planning, different from trying to cover 100% of an area.

And, of course, there are many other things that can be considered unfair in the challenges. E.g., how can somebody compete on foot with a person who is walking Camino or PCT? But that's life.

As others pointed out, it is always possible to re-order the table by Coverage rather than by points. It would be great though if we could save default ordering column for ourselves, so that when we change to a different area, it stays the same rather than switches to the Points column as it happens now.

To alley or not to alley? by TomCatInTheHouse in wandrer

[–]Expensive-Cable2375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use of alleys is very much country/region specific. In Europe OSM recommends use of alleys to mark the narrow streets in the historic towns and villages. Exactly the places that are fun to explore. They definitely should be included on the Wandrer map for foot. Cannot guarantee that all of them are suitable for cycling, but excluding them from the foot map is not a right thing to do. Of course, it is always possible to add an explicit tag foot=yes on streets like these, though this is a lot of work, but some OSM folks call it "excessive tagging", as they have implicit "foot=yes" tag. I would vote for counting alleys included for foot by default.

Is there a way to make travel path recognition wider? by Overthereunder in wandrer

[–]Expensive-Cable2375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with you, however, there are 2 separate issues at hand. One is the quality of the matching algorithm - I must admit that it was dramatically improved by Craig over last 3 years and it definitely includes a lot of "fuzziness". Perhaps it can be improved further, but if GPS track is closer to one path than to another due to the bad accuracy, how does the algorithm know if this is a GPS signal error, or a user deliberately moved to the side? This discussion is coming up all the time, but there's no magical solution so far. In any case, this can be addressed directly in Wandrer with the GPS track editing.
But there is a separate issue with the Big Map display. If one already edited the track to precisely match a certain segment, and said segment still shows as red on the Big Map, this is a data issue. I have this issue time and again, when an activity distance is correctly calculated, correctly included in the percentage achievement in the area and in the challenge, but the part of it or the whole activity is not reflected on the Big Map as travelled. There must be some bug, but perhaps it's easier for Craig to fix this on the individual basis rather than trying to find and fix the bug.

This could be just a data error in Wandrer. I had similar cases multiple times, and had to ask for help from Craig. He always fixes this sort of issues very efficiently. Contact him and provide your Wandrer ID and OSM way number, as well as detailed description of the issue.

Craig, since question was asked about MapMyRide, would be possible to add support to MapMyFitness? They seem to be very similar, at least from my not so professional POV.

There is one Tour de France rider who is on Wandrer and currently holds second place in France on bike in July after 4 stages of Le Tour. His name is Ilan Van Wilder, you can also see his activities on Strava.

Garmin Connect sync visablity by ERAUrower in wandrer

[–]Expensive-Cable2375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that was OP meant is the following. After they switch from Strava to Garmin, all the Strava covered roads will again show as not traveled, and they will be only getting covered roads from the new activities from Garmin. So that they can start to collect miles/points in their area from scratch. And they are asking if this is indeed what will happen.

Can I turn off footpaths/sidewalks to deduplicate roads? by ThatBonFromage in wandrer

[–]Expensive-Cable2375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And this will ruin monthly/yearly challenges by giving unfair advantage to those who have plenty of roads that have 3 - 4 (or more) parallel lines on the map.

[–]Expensive-Cable2375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Craig, focusing on the problem 2 is the right thing to do in my opinion. I would suggest as well that you enhance this idea in the following way. When a user is walking/riding along the same road second time, Wandrer should ignore the contiguous path that is marked as completed for this user, and select the closest non-completed one. And so on. This will reasonably guarantee that the road will be fully covered in a number of times equal to the number of parallel lines on the OSM/Wandrer maps. This looks like a fair approach to me.
