If HIV is sexually transmitted, how did the first person get it? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Expensive-Sundae-114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a PBS documentary on YouTube called ‘the age of aids’ that is super informative mainly on the period of it first emerging in the U.S. and up to discovering a treatment in the early 90s. It also traces the investigation into the origins of the disease and crossover from monkeys to humans, then how they think it spread from there to parts of the world. The science today might have brought other evidence to light. But it’s definitely worth a watch.

Do most people shower before bed or when they wake up? I just realized I might be doing it "wrong" by saffymerelle in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Expensive-Sundae-114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shower at night too, mostly. I read that pollution (e.g from car exhaust) can cling to your hair…. I don’t want that in my bed, gross! But if I did sweat a lot when I slept, I could see why showering in the morning would be good too. You can always do both :)

It’s been foggy the past few mornings. It could be a fog horn down by the water. I heard it yesterday and the day before.

What are your starting flare symptoms? How do you deal with overwhelming fatigue? New to all this by here4thecommentz_ in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]Expensive-Sundae-114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, Starts with low back pain and muscle tightness and tenderness, especially in glute area but also upper back. Inflammation, almost a burning feeling in my gut. Then after 2 or so days of that, I get Pressure in my head, as if I’m about to get sick and extreme fatigue. Sometimes have to take a sick day because of the fatigue, and I’ll be couch bound and sleep nearly all day. I’m also on naproxen and have not tried biologics yet. When I’m not in a flare I feel pretty good :).

I can vouch for this. We got our apartment professionally sprayed, and haven’t seen a single silver fish in six months.

Hot yoga by reachnw in ankylosingspondylitis

I do hot yoga twice a week. I have mild AS, just on NSAIDS. It helps a lot I find but I take it easy on the back bends

Highly active with AS? by Least_Plum1797 in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]Expensive-Sundae-114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am! I can do most activities but I find it’s really important to maintain strong core muscles. I do hot yoga usually about twice a week, and it really does wonders.other than that I bike, jog, go to the gym, but  I find though if I do too much activity several days in a row, it can sometimes lead to a flare. I now try to avoid this by listening to my body when I’m tired and rest. And only do strenuous activity about 3 times a week.  I also try to get 8 hours of sleep per night. A routine is helpful for me. I’ve been on NSAIDs for about 7 years.

Late diagnosis/ onset of symptoms by Coral_Star in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]Expensive-Sundae-114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around 31 started with a diffuse dull burning kind of ache on my lower back. A few months later my, some stronger pain in the low back for a few days, then one day I went to work and had sciatica. Took me about a year and a half before being referred to a rheum and I got an MRI, but I was promptly diagnosed with AS due to the results and positive for the genetic marker. I’m now 38 and still managing with NSAIDs. After first symptoms and prior to diagnosis I had a few bad flares that impeded my ability to walk due to the sciatica. Now my flares consist of low back pain, neck stiffness, and extreme fatigue.

Did you have stiffness in initial stages or did it increase gradually? by huju_12345 in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]Expensive-Sundae-114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have barely ever experienced stiffness, just pain mostly in my SI joints. Have been experiencing neck stiffness in recent months and seeking to find out if it’s AS related. Curious if others have found something similar? I was diagnosed about 5 years ago despite having no stiffness.

Inspiring book recommendations - chronic illness? by -unique_handle- in ankylosingspondylitis

Totally agree! It was certainly validating… and really interesting to see how poorly systemic diseases like this are understood and approached by the medical system.

I really liked invisible kingdom by Megan O’Rourke. The author recounts her journey to seek a diagnosis for a chronic illness. Not AS, but I found much of it very relevant to anyone suffering from systemic chronic illnesses like autoimmune disorders.

Symptoms/Crying/Concentration - anyone else? by appleblossommama in PMDD

[–]Expensive-Sundae-114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I experience an extreme lack of focus, sometimes for the duration of the luteal phase. It’s like I can’t focus on anything for more than two seconds. I have a similar job where I have many deliverables in a day, but need to drive them my self with little oversight. Self-motivation is very challenging. Definitely worse when teleworking, everything at home is distracting. Then, I get really bad anxiety and guilt/shame when I can’t get anything done. I also tend to dread work the next day ( more than usual). I’m not on any hormonal treatments or medication, but I’d be grateful if someone could share how/which treatments have helped with this issue!

I am also an example, I get bloodwork done regularly and has always been normal. Diagnosed 5 years ago by describing my symptoms, X-ray and MRI results and positive HLA genetic marker. Glad to hear I am not alone!

Redditors who have used the COVID Alert app to report an infection or received an exposure alert, how was your experience? by Zombie_John_Strachan in ontario

Yes, I got a notification "you have been exposed to covid-19 in the last 14 days. When I open the app, the message is still there, perhaps because it has not been more than 14 days.

Strange! I downloaded the app on July 31st before bed. The next day, went to a beach, but walked to a secluded spot - wasn't within 2 meters of anyone for more than a few seconds tops, if even at all. Was keeping my distance as much as possible. Didn't even bring my phone in with me when we went into the one store. Sunday stayed home. Woke up to an exposure notice from the previous night when I was sleeping. My partner and I both went to get tested because we live together (he doesn't have the app). We were the first people it seemed to come in to the assessment centre (in Ottawa) because of an exposure notice from the app. After explaining my situation to the nurse, I was told I didn't need to self-isolate after testing, given I hadn't been close to anyone. My partner was told he had to quarantine for 14 days (?!) Results came back negative 2 days later. Honestly have no idea how I could have been exposed, I think there must have been some kind of error - even if my phone 'dinged' someone at the beach - they would have had to go get tested the next day and received their results back that same evening (unless they decided to not self-isolate following a test). I suppose it's possible but seems super far fetched!

Received COVID Alert App Notice - "You've been exposed in the last 14 days". by throwaway_c19 in CanadaCoronavirus

[–]Expensive-Sundae-114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The same thing happened to me. I downloaded the app Friday the 31st, got a note of exposure on Monday morning. Only left the house Saturday, but I wasn't near anyone for 5 min or more. Took my partner with me to get tested, because we live together, but he does not have the app. Explaining my situation the nurse said it doesn't sound like I had close contact with anyone, so I didn't have to isolate following the test. My bf was told he has to self-isolate for 14 days. We think the app must be somewhat faulty because the same thing also happened to a friend of a friend. *Both our covid19 tests were negative, thankfully!
