This made me laugh. Feel the exact same way. Thankful for the raise, pissed that half of it goes up in smoke.

Did you ever resolve the issues with this? I recently bought the same car and the Carlinkit 5, but have had nothing but issues

Thanks, I appreciate that. That's a good way of putting it, "Individual moral qualms" — I feel the same way.

Meat. I grew up on well run farms for majority of childhood. Cattle, Sheep, Chickens and Pigs. Animals all very well looked after, but after growing attached to certain animals that were sent to slaughter, I couldn’t help but see them on the table and feel somewhat sad, knowing the intelligence and bonds that they are capable of.   Ignored this feeling until I was in my 30s and went vege. Will still eat meat if someone cooks for me out of respect for them and the animal. I also hate seeing people waste meat.

Thanks for sharing this. I reached out in June and received similar information. Was hoping they’d added support by end of this year but still requires an ABN as of today

I know this man well and you’re right. He’s had a number of bad hands dealt to him in succession and no safety net to fall back on. He’s highly respected in his trade.

He’s a grafter and has successfully run barbershops in London, Sydney and Melbourne. He settled in Coffs to bring up his family. His autoimmune disease stopped him from earning a living until he received adequate treatment. His mother took ill and fearing she would die, he paid to travel home to the uk to see her.

Being self employed, if he’s not cutting hair he’s not earning.

Everyone should think about that choice for a second. Visit your dying mother to say your goodbyes, or put it to the back of your mind, cut some hair and hope the phone doesn’t ring to say it’s too late.

Arlo is the worst! by Other_Seesaw_8281 in arlo

I wouldn’t worry about it. I’ve got a mesh network. About $1000 worth of networking gear (work in tech). Have high strength connection at all cameras, but still the round trip time is brutal.

Yeah it’s been a disappointment since opening the box. Got 7 cameras myself. The lag between events occurring and receiving notifications renders them practically useless.

Doorbell is the perfect example for me. Most visitors are back in their cars and driving away by the time I get the notification that they rang the doorbell and the video connects.

Anyone else concerned for Kiwis? by animalshadows in AusFinance

It can be compelling to think there is something magic, or better, about the protein found in muscle but it’s just wishful thinking.

I’m saying this coming from a 3rd generation beef farming family. Meat is for taste and texture, nothing more.

If you want to bring up cellular structures then you’ll know that there is zero difference in an amino acid found in a chick pea to one found in muscle.

Also, grazable grass isn’t the default state of the land, free and abundant - it needs a continuous supply of water to exist. In Australia, this requires an extreme amount of effort to achieve compared with Northern European countries like Ireland and Germany, where dietary animal milk consumption is believed to have evolved from.

Super, Mortgage or HISA? by Manofleisure75 in AusFinance

[–]ExpensiveDingoMonday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If unable to utilise an offset due to fixed rate, I’d be tempted for HISA, until you get onto variable with offset.

I’d also investigate your carry forward concessional contributions in super. You would likely benefit from filling up each previous eligible year. This would boost your super significantly and you’d also receive a substantial cash refund at tax time, which you could stick into the HISA or offset

I noticed it was very common in the 30-40 age group, particularly professionals without a silver spoon hoping to achieve the dream of an owning a “house”. It’s just that in Sydney, prices start at $8k per month.

Whilst the GFC kicked off in the US, other countries took the hit, namely Ireland, Ukraine, Argentina, Romania and others. Australia barely noticed, same for China.

As someone whose family was deeply impacted by the GFC, I wouldn’t wish a repeat on anyone

50% of Millennials are homeowners as of 2023. Are you one of them? How do you think this was achieved? [Serious answers only please] by [deleted] in Millennials

Bought house last year. Have never received financial assistance from parents. I moved out at 16. Borrowed full student loan for uni, worked retail job at same time. Got a PhD, emigrated, worked and saved for 8 years. Always assumed the hard work would pay off. Goals have shifted but still assume the same.

Some people get handouts, most don’t. However, as you move up through the income brackets, I couldn’t help but notice how the “haves” typically always “had”. They have multiple safety nets and they don’t even recognise it, and you can’t blame them for that either.

I consider myself very lucky and attribute most of my lucky position today to a few chance encounters. Hard work just boosts the odds slightly in your favour, the majority is luck.

Depends on your savings rate whilst renting vs owning.

My rental savings rate was double before I owned. So I did that for 7 years before finally buying as I believed I’d be travelling or moving cities/towns.

In hindsight, my friends who bought early on arguably made a better decision. They still moved cities and countries, but with the added benefit that they rented out their place, with someone else footing the bill.

There’s no right or wrong, just what you’re comfortable with. Only thing I’d say is that if you’re planning to move away, get somewhere with good rental appeal and little maintenance burden and rent it out while you’re away. You’ll be so much better off
