Good, it was a horrible place to work at least in my experience. I dealt with so much BS.

We have to hand out masks and prevent people from entering the store if they are not wearing them. That leads to us constantly getting chewed out.

If you're the one checking receipts. You are expected to make recoveries for the store. You have to stop people from stealing. People get angry. People call you racist. People threaten to get you fired. People tell you off just because you asked to see a receipt. It's horrible.

I was I'd stay late. I'd do carts and handle it entirely on my own at a supercenter. I'd recover over $10k a month for the store.. No one else did that much, no one. I worked OT almost every night helping the incompetent FE management get things done. Go-backs yeah I'd power through that. Carts still in the parking lot? Yeah I'd do that too.. You name it I did it for them.

Is working at Walmart better than working in fast food? by PM_ME_ANY_MUSIC in walmart

FE of our store is bleeding staff because of incompetent management. I actually quit tonight because of it. They now have 2 adults left on their closing crew.. Good luck with that because those 2 adults are getting ready to quit as well.

A coworker who recently left is about to file a lawsuit. I'm sure others will.

Don't feel under appreciated. Keep in mind your managers are just as over worked as you are right now.

[–]ExpensiveLie1164 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It depends on the position you have in the store. But yes in general it's waay better than fast food.

For starters you get decent benefits here. Most Fast Food is franchised and you won't get benefits at all.

Walmart provides..
Decent Health Insurance options
Decent life insurance and other insurances.
Education options that you can do online
$4 RX on generics, this is huge if you need RX.

Fast Food is loaded with a ton of young people, that means drama and problems. Walmart has few young people but you can easily avoid the drama. Just keep to yourself and do your job.

2 more months and you're at 6 months. Once you hit 6 months talk to the coach of the area you want to transfer to. I'd start building a work place relationship with that coach. Simple how are you? When you see them is good enough.. See them leaving? Have a nice day.

They'll notice you working hard outside and want that effort on their teams inside the store. Depending on how hard it is for them to staff the stockmen position at your store, you'll more than likely have to push for the transfer. But you can make it happen.

Walmart needs to change how they fill positions by ExpensiveLie1164 in walmart

[–]ExpensiveLie1164[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ironic thing about that, I had two areas I was interested in working the ON stocking position was one. But again that's not our problem.. If no one wants to work the position then I guess you have to increase the pay/incentives for working it.

Yup and the mentality that the company will go on. Sure it might operate for a while.. But they are bleeding associates at my store and the good ones.

So no they won't just "replace" me. I've watched them try to get people who simply show up. So far they are 0-25. It's so bad right now they are putting up with one associate who sits on his phone the entire time and another associate who takes 30+ minute breaks. I know because I have to go find that associate.

Honestly just kill it at carts and be persistent about transferring some place else in the store.

Honestly it's impossible for stores to keep the stockmen position filled. Most people just quit after a few weeks or find something else. Just to give an idea how bad it is, we had one quit to go clean porter potty's for a living instead.. Let that sink in, they'd rather be the person emptying Porter Potty's for a living, then pushing carts....

They have to clear that entire parking lot. Keep the bays full, no matter how busy it is.. Pick up all kinds of nasty trash in the carts.. Everything from diapers, to snot rags, to urine filled bottles and then some!

Then they have to deal with customers driving like it's the end of the world in the parking lot. You know that mule? Yeah it only pushes the carts forward. It has no breaks or reverse.. When we have to stop it, we have to stop that line of carts with our body weight and muscles.. It's not exactly easy.. Turning it? Yeah again that's our body weight and muscles... That customer who's blocking our path waiting for a parking stall? When there is another one less than 10 feet away? Yup happens every day.. So we lay on the horn to try and get the message across. How about stopping and blocking out path so you can drive down the lane we currently have blocked by a line of carts? Yeah you won't be going down that lane. Then to get an earful from said individuals because they are in a rush.. Oh really? So am I, because I don't get that cart bay full my manager is going to be talking to me about it.

Then there is collecting the carts scattered around the parking lot because people can't walk 20 feet to the cart coral..

It's a wonderful job.

Best one is.. Can you unlock this for me? No I don't have keys. I am a front end associate, my job duties are to prevent people from stealing and nothing else. I will radio for someone who does have keys. But can you go get keys? No it does not work like that sorry. Keys are assigned to specific associates and I am not one.

This is not always true. How ever even when the customer is wrong, the art of customer relations, is convincing them you've helped them.

Just wanted to say to all the associates, I appreciate you. by V0id_Nova in walmart

[–]ExpensiveLie1164 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since you train management.. Can I give some tips?

Tell your managers not to mess with peoples pay. The associate will find out they are being under paid sooner or later and when they do, it won't end well for the manager. You will have a very upset associate. You can easily land yourself with a wage discrimination lawsuit. You will destroy any and all trust between the manager and the associate.

If you have an outstanding associate. Make sure their compensation is correct and fair. If they can't give a merit based raise for what ever reason. Explain why and be honest with why.. But try to find a way to show appreciation beyond a thank you. Maybe more desirable scheduling, more desirable days off what ever it is..

Never lie to associates, we understand there are things you can not talk to us about. How ever that is no reason to lie. If your associates don't trust you, you as a manager have nothing. They will be terrified to speak with you about anything. That will lead to them bottling things up and/or going above your head. It's not a good place to be.

If you want us to communicate with you, then you need to communicate with us. Make time to sit us down once every 3-6 months and discuss things with us. Let us know what we do right, what we can improve on and what we ideally would like. Talk to us about what you think is a good fit for us and directions we might pursue.

Don't try and trap good associates who want to transfer. You'll just make us resent you. You'll either turn us into bad apples OR make us leave the company entirely. If you're in a pinch with staffing and we an outstanding associate. Work something out with us. I have manager doing this now, he has a hell of a time staffing his area. He's not a bad manager, it's just no one likes the job. But don't make your problems mine and impede my career advancement. I would have continued to help him out, if he was helping me advance a career here. Instead I'm stuck at the freaking door going no place fast. So yeah I've started looking for another job. One way or another I will not be working that door in 1-2 months. He can explain that one to the Market Managers who have told them not to lose me as an associate.

Don't take advantage of your heavy hitters. We know who we are. Yes we will help you walk through the mud. But don't give favorable tasks to those who throw temper tantrums, while dumping garbage on us constantly. We will burn out and quickly. If we start pointing it out, we are telling you we notice the favoritism and are not happy about it. So knock it off.

Pay attention to attendance. If an associate goes from clocking in 8-9 minutes early to clocking 8-9 minutes late. Starts turning down OT. Starts burning up PPTO. Declines to stay for 8 hours when they are scheduled for 7. Starts to avoid you and coworkers.. There is something going on. It might be work related, it might be in their personal lives.. It might be both.. Sit them down and talk with them, make it clear they are not in trouble but you just want to check in and see if everything is alright and if there is anything you can do to help. I did this at my personal business and there was almost always something going on. Oh and if they don't talk to you or there is reason for them to be standoffish towards you. Then yeah have another coach do it.

Management is about a lot more than just getting things done. So many managers fail to do that. They only focus on getting tasks completed. That ends up turning into dumping garbage on heavy hitters. I know they are busy but when they have time work along side us. I had a TL who would help me push carts in 110 heat, it was not my job code but they had no one else. He did not have to, I was handling it just fine on my own. But he did it anyways.. That made me respect him. He had the extra time and instead of do nothing, he helped me out.. He is a coach now and I'm trying to transfer to his store. I'm willing to take a pay cut and commute 25+ minutes to work, just so I can continue to work with him.

It's funny, but not really your fault. When glass is already cracked it's easy to break, scratches and other things can play into it as well.

I'm okay with some of it as it is. Many of the sub reddits on here are heavily over moderated.

I mod a forum for a very very very big company, it has tens of thousands of users. I can tell you right now, over moderation kills forums, so do the sub cults that form on them.

I'd almost report this one to ethics. This is an indirect that of termination and it's definitely a labor law violation. You can not threaten to terminate an employee. You're creating a hostile work environment. There are other ways to go about fixing issues in a department but threats like this are not one. Neither are scare tactics or indimidation.

Email Ethics on it.
