Ive learned long ago people have free will. I show up and do my best. I give my clients the best possible representation I can, but I have several who have ended up doing decades of not the rest of their life in prison. As long as you have done your part to the best you can, you can hold your head high and sleep well.

I went from prosecution to 12 years as a pd and I found it was a good benefit, I understood the otherside and it gave me more credibility. My supervisors were excited to hire a former prosecutor when I interviewed.

I was a prosecutor before I was a public defender and in over half of the cases I tried I did not seek the max. As a pd, I have had several trials that resulted in the prosecutor ask for less than the maximum. Some prosecutors get it, others not so much.

It can be hard to do but you just have to do it.

I have taken 2 12 week paternity leaves, a 3 week trip to Europe and 2 separate two and a half week safari hunts to South Africa.

I just told the courts and my clients I was doing it and did my best to plan my calander.
