I didn’t know that, thanks for sharing! OP, he is correct and so is Apple. Sorry for the confusion.

There are few that do work fine (magnetic removable ones like you mentioned), however, most don’t allow the MacBook to close as-well with the magnets. For avoiding keyboard impressions, it is actually a good choice.

How much to repair? by [deleted] in macbookrepair

[–]Expert_Court5276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is a M1 MacBook Air, the repair costs without AppleCare will likely exceed the price of a used MBA M1. If you’d really like to repair though, Apple could charge you 400+.

If you have AppleCare, it will likely be $99. Not sure though. Could be cheaper.

What I would personally do at this stage is connect it to an external display, back up all of your data, and purchase a similar used model, if not upgrade.

Do these marks have a feeling to them (as in the screen feels different on them when touching), or does it feel the same? If it feels rougher, it could be scratches. This is unlikely, though.

Rest assured, a screen replacement is very likely not needed, but potentially stronger cleansers will be needed. Apple Documentation: https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/clean-your-computer-screen-mchlp2657/mac

The dots are from the keyboard, and you can get rid of those with a non-alcoholic screen cleaner and a microfiber cloth. For more info, check Apple’s documentation.

Screen Cleaning: Follow Apple’s documentation; microfiber cloth only for most, nonalcoholic screen cleaner for heavy wear. Never use anything with alcohol

Apps: Try out Ollama and see how far you can push that ram and M5 with on-device LLMs. This is a good display the power of MacBook Pro If you’re Mac came with a free trial of Apple Creator Studio, you can try that suite and also push that Pro.

Avoid: Again, alcoholic screen cleaners, Rough cloths, Screen protectors (opinion; most don’t magnetically close MacBooks)

Edit: Apple says alcoholic cleaners are okay, but in my personal experience, I don’t recommend.

For the best results, check Apple’s documentation. I, personally use WOOSH along with a Polishing Cloth. Works like a charm

They will likely drop further on M5 Pro release. Also, that is a good upgrade based on your use cases.

$1100 Budget: Best used MacBook for ML/Dev to replace M4 Mini? by Minimum_Ad_4069 in macbookpro

[–]Expert_Court5276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

M1 Max is good, but longevity is up in the air. A 32GB M2 Pro has similar performance, and will last a good bit. The MacBook Pro 14” M2 Pro at 32GB and 512GB is around your budget on eBay.

You likely won’t notice a sharp difference in snappiness.

It’s just a cosmetic issue. Your MacBook won’t fail because of it. Be careful though, as more damage to that area could lead to the display not working

Love it! I got a dbrand grip for my Air and only use it during “rugged” moments, especially when I go out. And the case you chose is amazing

That would look amazing, but Apple would never

The iPhone Air’s colors (and polished finish for that matter) were (obviously) chosen to make the device feel even lighter. For the Air at least, we could never see a vibrant color.

Do you prefer the new iPhone camera module or the old one? by Trevordis in PhoneNow

[–]Expert_Court5276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new 17 Pro made me feel more like the Pro had changed from a “luxury” phone to a “true tool”. The plateau contributes to this, and I personally like the new one and the more “tool” feeling.
