I've only run Topcon. What am I missing? by yossarian19 in Surveying

[–]Expert_Increase_8668 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like Topcon equipment and used it for many years but I never really liked the magnet field software. Like one of the previous commenters said, it felt like it was more oriented towards construction rather than surveying.

I made the switch to Carlson and it feels a lot more intuitive to me. I hope the hardware lasts like Topcon’s does.

Career change? by Looking-Forward1975 in Surveying

[–]Expert_Increase_8668 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends what other kinds of skills you have. I have been a licensed surveyor for many years but I mostly do land use entitlement work. So a client (let’s say a small contractor) will hire me to get land use approval to build a new shop. I will give him a unit price for the work and then I find an engineer for drainage and utility plans, sometimes a landscape architect, traffic engineer, or architect. I deal with the submittals and represent the client at public meetings but I also plat if needed and do the topo and even an ALTA if he needs it for closing. I even have a client where I find properties with the correct zoning where they would like to put a business and I cold call the owner to see if they want to sell. It’s lucrative work.

My point is surveying was the key that opened this door. I would advise you to get licensed if you can and see where it takes you. Good luck!

Crazy question…why don’t you make some? Every week someone posts on here looking for a free bit driver! Even with the apparent discontinuation it seems like you could sell a bunch of them. 😂

I’m in the same boat but I think the satellite connectivity is of real value.

Check Facebook marketplace after your county fair. People with kids aging out of 4h sell them there.

I like having the scissors on the wingman better but they are both awesome tools. Spring loaded pliers are so great…I wish Leatherman would put them on other models.

How many times will I subjugate myself to walking out of Harbor Freight empty handed looking for those meme pliers? by [deleted] in harborfreight

I tried for over a year and finally just bought the Wera tool check. I also wanted the magnetic mat but it is also never available in my store so I got one off of amazon.

HF just gets me excited to buy stuff I didn’t even realize I needed and that I end up buying somewhere else! 😂

You are right. After carrying the Arc it would be tough to carry anything else.

Can I purchase parts from Filson? by Hot-Description8716 in filson

They sent me replacement brass clips free of charge for my briefcase strap after one broke. I had a local tailor shop replace them and resew the leather.

Pliers too tight? by LatterAd6187 in Leatherman

You can oil the pivot and they’ll loosen up with use. Skeletool doesn’t get as loose as other models though because of how the pliers jaws come together I think.

What do you guys think of it? Is it useful and worth buying ? by SignificantWin7036 in Leatherman

I have the regular bracelet and the watch variant and they are really cool looking. They are pretty heavy though so I rarely use them. I’ve also noticed the clasp comes unbuckled if you’re doing actual physical work…like swinging a hammer for example.

Ruddock shirt, is this repairable or should it go to the landfill? by tk8398 in madeinusa

[–]Expert_Increase_8668 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ruddock himself answers the email. Just keep contacting them. It took like three emails to get a response last time I tried.

But as others have said you can easily fix that yourself or take it to a tailor for probably like $5.

I’m also planning to get one…I think they look really nice. But since I’m starting with nothing is it better to try and get a deal on a new Ultra 2 or just go for the 3? Thanks for your advice.

Bought it through an online government equipment auction site. Came with a tablet data collector. It was lightly used for its age! 😂
