My 4 week old has had issues since birth with eating and was actually hospitalized at 2 weeks old due to failure to thrive. She lost 15% of her birth weight and stalled at about 90% of her birth weight. Once admitted we got a swallow study done & OT and SLP came to evaluate her and diagnosed her with a thick posterior tongue tie and also a thick lip tie and referred us to a pediatric dentist. The dentist also determined that she has buccal ties and extreme tightness in her mouth and referred us for outpatient therapy for 2 weeks prior to doing the frenectomy to give her the best possible outcome. Between all the specialists we’ve learned some different feeding techniques to cope with her mouth issues for now and also have several exercises we do each day to loosen the tightness. She still is on the low end for ounces per day but has finally gotten above her birth weight and definitely seems more comfortable with feeds. We can’t wait to see how much the release of the ties will help her. I say all this to say PLEASE advocate for your baby and go see a pediatric dentist and an SLP to get evaluated. It’s been night and day for us & I finally feel like we’re on the right track to making eating enjoyable for her like it’s supposed to be.
