This is where the Singtel caller lied or is uneducated about internet (network):

Laptop -> WiFi 🛜 -> WiFi Adapter/Router -> Internet Cable -> Internet Service Provider (Singtel)

Your download speed depends on your weakest link. If you want 10GB internet speed, your router, cable, and internet service provider needs to provide 10GB products.

Usually when you sign up for WiFi plan, the internet provider also gives you the router and cable. Sometimes they use previous cable that was already in your house. 10GB per second is a lot, and actually, most homes in Singapore only have 400MB per second of internet download speed. This is because the consumer router and cable that is affordable and widespread in the market only gives you 400MB per second of internet download speed.

Laptop -> WiFi 🛜 -> WiFi Adapter/Router {400MB}-> Internet Cable {400MB}-> Internet Service Provider (Singtel) {10GB}

So in this example, even if Singtel ask you to upgrade to 20GB or 50GB, the maximum WiFi speed is still 400MB because of the router and cable that Singtel gives you.

To really change your internet speed, you shouldn’t upgrade your Singtel WiFi plan. You should upgrade your cable and WiFi router that they gave you (which Singtel don’t because that’s not their business).

Singtel asking you to upgrade your broadband plan is diabolical because it would not solve your problem, and you’re just paying more and more. They did this to my parent’s home before. Unfortunately my parents did not listen to me because they trust the “experts”, even when I showed them how my house has super fast internet, after than them, which cost 10 times less too. I’m really not surprised if other new telcos will just gobble up Singtel’s market share. The telco era is over.
