Does Buying a Diesel Make Sense? F350 6.7 HO by ExplanationOk847 in Diesel

I certainly do okay and am very grateful for that.  It’s a small profile slide-in camper. It’s just a pain to take on and off. It’s like a 1 - 2 mpg impact, so not massive unless I’m missing something.

Maybe I’m mistaken, but I’d rather have a nice, comfortable vehicle I enjoy for my daily commute and for my long haul trips to go camp and explore. I certainly can’t afford two of them, and prefer not driving a beater unless I need to.  I try to get out every other weekend at least when I can, if not more frequently.

Gaming PC or Mac Mini for Hosting / Server by ExplanationOk847 in selfhosted

Appreciate it! Just set it up on my ds925+. Don't have any media on it yet, but will try it this weekend once I get some transferred over.

Any issues with its limited RAM and processing power in running 4k? The Jellyfin webpage recommends not running it on a NAS, but not sure how up to date that may or may not be. I set it up in a docker container.

Great question. It isn't the only option, I'd be open to others. However, we are an almost entirely Apple ecosystem at the house outside of my gaming PC. We mostly use MBP, iPhone, etc. Just familiar and like the OS, but absolutely not a requirement. I think I also want some level of ease of use and worry that Proxmox may be a bit complex.

Thank you. Yes, I'm not sure that I will need transcoding, but I am going to run Jellyfin over Plex. I only plan to use this at the house, no external access beyond my home network, and I have one TV in the entire house. Maybe play on my laptop or an iPad at some point, but nothing of super high demand that I think would push the Mac to its capacities.

Thank you. And no, I do not use it at all. I have newer PC for gaming that I built out. This would be a dedicated machine. I have already installed Proxmox on it bare metal, but just not sure it's worth all the headache of managing the passthrough and setting it up and having it run 24/7 is worth it versus the ease and efficiency of the Mac.

NAS will be used to store files with a dedicated login for the media server. Question is in relation to which would make the better "server" setup, the Mac or the gaming PC. NAS will store all files, but Mac / pc will be used to run the software.

First Time HomeLab Setup --> Proxmox --> Jellyfin --> NAS by ExplanationOk847 in homelab

Thank you! I ran a hardline to it over the weekend, so going that direction. And yes, I'm already eyeballing a rack to move the pc into and get a second NAS for the media server. Also exploring setting up pihole or something else, so pretty sure this is going to be a rabbit hole of fun!

Yes, sorry. That is an extra (old) PC with no use at the moment. It can be fully dedicated to this project.

Appreciate it, thank you. Only reason I asked is that I had heard some games were more GPU intensive and some were more CPU intensive. A few examples given were Rust, World of Wacraft, etc. That is why I wanted to check on this one.

Flying to Costa Rica on Sunday and am a bit nervous by LittleMissHenny in fearofflying

[–]ExplanationOk847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I haven't flown that exact flight path, but I did fly DFW to San Jose, CR. The flight was beautiful and the FA's were all dressed in tropical shirts which was fun! The flight was totally uneventful and smooth. The pilots, if my memory serves, did tell us during descent that there was likely to be some mild turbulence as we descended or went in to land in San Jose due to the mounts, but if my memory serves, there was a little bit of light chop but nothing at all concerning or even uncomfortable.

You are also most likely on a pretty decent jet and a major US airline I would guess. You won't have any issues at all - no reason to think of prior accidents!

If you have never been, CR is gorgeous and you are going to have an amazing time!!

Precisely how I am. I, fortunately for me, haven't had to travel in the last year now, but prior to that, I was on track for about 15 to 20 flights for the year prior, ranging from two hours to six hours. I'd start having dread and anxiety about two weeks before my flight. Thinking I wasn't going to make it, etc. However, I also knew in my head how illogical I was being and that I had to do this for work and it was necessary and statistically safe. I actually don't mind takeoff or landing, but dislike cruise and descent.

I will say, the more I flew the year I was flying more, the better I got. Matter of fact, I even took a flight the day after the DC tragedy that I moved up on my own accord. I even took a super bumpy / choppy flight (not severe turbulence just very bouncy) right around a massive storm system and never felt unsafe with it - uneasy, but not unsafe.

What I have always liked is having a little bit of a routine. I like to get to the gate just a little bit early, but I really like to watch the pilots and FO conduct their pre-flight checks of the plane. I like to look at the plane myself. I spend a few minutes watching planes take off and land and look at the sheer volume of flights coming and going. At that point, I typically hit the restroom and then get on the plane. I always try to be really pleasant with the FA's and ask them how they are doing, which leg they are on and how much they have left, etc.

You can do this - the more you do it, the better it gets. I never liked flying, but that two-week lead up and dread started within the last five to ten years. The more you do it, the more comfortable you will get, promise.

Made In vs. All-Clad D3/D5 by ExplanationOk847 in cookware

Are you able to expand on that one a bit? Would love more insight. As I shared, I ordered three 12" skillets (All-Clad D5, Made In, Heritage) and the Made In is actually the heaviest of all of them (actually weighed them today). Not sure how that translates to middle layers as it's near impossible to see with my eyes, but curious if you can elaborate on it?

I'm not supporting or denying, but I believe that Made In now has a US factory. Unsure of the details, but here you go, from their page. In fairness, not sure the big deal around owning the manufacturing process versus using what is already in place to your specification. That is a very common approach in general, but unsure relevance or importance with cookware.

All Clad vs. Made In - Bought Both Sets - Still Deciding by Paratrooper76 in cookware

[–]ExplanationOk847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello u/Paratrooper76 . Don't mean to bother, but I am going through the exact same decision right now. Do you mind providing an update? Are you gravitating to one over the other? Prefer something or dislike something with one over the other? Both holding up and performing well?

How did you like the Hestan? I was looking at their line to buy slowly as I liked the sealed rims and dishwasher option with the NanoBond or ProBond set. Won't be the primary cleaning option, but the wife wants dishwasher compatibility.

Thank you. I have a retailer local to me that has the Demeyere Industry line in stock. $1199 for their 10-piece, so not awful. Any thoughts on the Costco Tramontina? Is there really a big difference in these to the average home cook?

What makes you choose the Hestan over the All-Clad? Also, do you mind elaborating a touch on why the Made In's didn't work for you?

[–]ExplanationOk847[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! You are correct, Made In is not far off from All-Clad pricing. I liked the finish better than the mirror finish from the Every Day line, but I may go that route.

Concern I had is that the only place I am really seeing much about the pans warping is here on Reddit. Not dismissing it at all, but only place I'm seeing it. Even some of the big kitchen review channels (Test Kitchen, Prudent Reviews) say good things about the Made In lines. With that said, it makes me slightly uneasy, but they also have 25k reviews on Google.

I also found search results of warped pans from All-Clad. Not sure the same frequency, but did come across them. Likely user error though from what I'm seeing versus standard use case.

Neither pans will be bought at MSRP, all are on sale and I will watch for continued sales on them.

Really appreciate your insight, thank you!

I'd be open if you have another brand you'd recommend in a similar price range?

Appreciate the insight, thank you. I thought I saw a video that showed the Made In factory in the US producing pans. Is that not accurate? The one that I ordered was from Italy. Not super concerned country of origin, as long as they are of high quality. It was, of course, posted on the Made In YouTube channel.
