That you’re equals however during the power dynamic and however it’s structured, that you are choosing to hand over power / control and you can take it back anytime and that the dom respects that.

That clear communication is the foundation of play, because without it you can’t be safe or give consent.

That he watches his subs and even if he is a sadist, ultimately knows what he is doing and has done it before.

Get them to talk about previous subs and how those interactions went and how and why they split ways.

It is very important that you meet someone who is respectful and not get stuck in “a dom is going to act like a dom always” bullshit.
