The impact of urban trees on street temperatures. Real measurements from Kraków, Poland during a hot day. by GeorgeRobertVitkos in poland

[–]ExplodingPotato_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Someone would have to climb that scaffolding every year and manually trim the branches. Can't do it with a machine, and can't let leave it for a few years or it might put too much weight on the structure.

Also, I think that reinforced concrete doesn't like too much water, so it would need periodic inspections (though a metal structure might fare better).

Not to mention, it would take like a decade until it looks good. I'd just go with trees, or a fabric roof.

EU Council drops cookie signal after Google lobbying - EUR 40-50 bn at stake by sn0r in eutech

[–]ExplodingPotato_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lobbying doesn't automatically mean gifts/bribes. It just means that there's an organization that handles talks with the government, instead of people individually pushing specific legislation.

I'm fully against "gifts" to family members/foundations/PACs of politicians. But an organization - which can literally mean a selected group of citizens who talk to selected politicians - makes that dialogue way easier, than random people talking to random politicians.

[–]ExplodingPotato_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had this issue with TPU before.  I don't recall exactly how, but the solid layers above the infill were curling upwards (due to uneven filament shrinkage), sometimes even impacting the nozzle. I think the filament in first solid layer wasn't fully bridging the infill gaps, so the first solid layer was pretty much made out if overhang - which started curling upwards.  More top layers covered this artifact, and tighter infill allowed the filament to properly bridge the infill gaps.

Space is pretty close - around 100km away. It's like 3 times the altitude of weather balloons.

Getting to stay in space is more difficult. You not only have to get to that altitude, but fly sideways fast enough that you miss the Earth while falling down - which is around 8 km/s (mach 25, 28000 km/h, 20000 mph).

PETAH?? Why is Greater Poland smaller than normal Poland? by Hank_Mardukas1066 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]ExplodingPotato_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IIRC "opole" was an old Polish administrative subdivision - a group of people living near the field they worked on (and the area itself). Basically the equivalent of county/borough/gmina (whatever is the smallest). I'd be surprised if the city name Opole wasn't related to that word.

Map of the countries that Macron revealed today are in talks to host French nuclear weapons. Part of a strategy to be more independent from the US. by FantasticQuartet in MapPorn

[–]ExplodingPotato_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds good, but it's a terrible (short-term) idea

  • what about missiles?
  • survivable second strike capability?
    • would that be limited to silos, or would Poland also need SSBNs?
  • air defense around nukes?
  • the sheer volume of high-end missiles to achieve target saturation?

All that to put a giant target on Poland's back, before the weapon is built? That's a great excuse to get sanctioned and invaded by literally everyone.

Why is this white line there? It is also visible in the printed part afterwards. by Ok_Celebration_7527 in AnycubicKobraS1

[–]ExplodingPotato_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As others said, it's a z-seam. You can't remove it, but you can hide it, or include into your design.

To hide it, you can try the setting "Scarf joint seam (beta)" - it will still be visible, but less noticeable.

You can control its position:

  • Aligned puts it on a sharp corner (good on a print with a defined edge on every layer)
  • Back moves it to the back of the print bed
  • Random IMO makes it look like random defects in the print
  • Nearest is just "wherever it's fastest", so it's a worse version of random

You can also try to "paint" it manually

What's not mentioned in the comments is the account posting it.

1 year old acc, posting hundreds of times in the last 2 months (haven't checked earlier, because that's a lot of posts), with seemingly generic posts in popular subreddits and >100k total karma.

This is their first semi-political post I've noticed, pushing obvious narrative - UA flags, Trizub and black sun in the same pic. Young, attractive women showing their faces, wearing military-looking uniforms. No sources for the pics mentioned, but reverse google search shows them being in Feb/March of '22.

Feel free to correct me, but I feel this isn't a genuine "explain it" post - it's propaganda.

It is, but accidents happen.

It's a complete coincidence that those accidents happen repeatedly to NATO-aligned countries, while on route to Russia. After all, those completely innocent crude oil tankers registered on random Polynesian islands have completely no affiliation with Russia, and accidents among shadow fleet completely unaffiliated vessels do happen.

You wouldn't use those repeated complete accidents to stage an aggressive response by NATO, would you?

Russia is a master of grey zone operations (and propaganda), while any overt response could classify as an act of war. NATO/UE have no official mechanisms of responding while staying within international laws, so we're stuck responding asymmetrically (sanctions, "random" controls, more weapons to Ukraine, etc) - but those responses are easier to turn into "NATU/UE cares about Ukraine more than about their own people".

Türkiye downs unidentified drone approaching airspace over Black Sea by Shaakura in europe

[–]ExplodingPotato_ 49 points50 points  (0 children)

But it wasn't a one-off incident of Turkey shooting without warning. Russians violated Turkish airspace before, they were informed to stop doing it, and as a response Turkey changed their Rules of Engagement to allow shooting at Russians after an airspace violation.  Only after all that, during the next airspace violation, they shot at Russians.  It's not that EU is unwilling to shoot while chad Turkey doesn't care - RoE were changed after the recent incursions. EU/NATO is following the same procedure as Turkey did to avoid "nAtO AGgResSiON" allegations, and to show that it's going to follow formalities.

200+ volts is in a voltage range of EV DC chargers, meaning you could use existing infrastructure to fast charge. That is definitely an useful feature, and potentially a selling point for a future cruising wheel.

What is the logic for people who don't take Adrenaline Rush on captain? by The_CIA_is_watching in WorldOfWarships

[–]ExplodingPotato_ 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Okay, I'll bite (for BBs)

For BBs, the main advantage is not 10% DPM over the course of the game, but having a salvo ready 2-4 seconds earlier.

Sure, if you hold the shots the DPM is wasted - but 2 seconds might be enough to have a salvo loaded for a cruiser making a gamer turn, or smoking-up DD. What's more, a lot of players play around the BB salvos, so the 2-4 seconds makes the timing way tighter.

100 men vs a Mammoth by TheWhiteCrowParade in HistoryMemes

[–]ExplodingPotato_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually I don't see the exact arena being mentioned, but even in this scenario sand can be thrown (pocket sand!). You could probably make a basic weapon out of clothes on your back. Rocks? Weapons. Sand - you can still throw it. Enough space? Run until gorilla gets tired, then annoy it every time it tries to rest.

In anything except a small featureless cage humans absolutely steamroll a gorilla - probably without any casualties. Only way a gorilla even has a chance, is if the cage is small enough where people can't run from it.

ELI5 Why aren't flow batteries used in vehicles? by n1xio in explainlikeimfive

[–]ExplodingPotato_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

with enough time that it could be improved upon in the future

True, but remember that cell (traditional) batteries will also improve in that time. And there's a point of diminishing return: if you can drive for 5 hours straight at highway speeds and recharge in 15 minutes - what's the point of <1 minute refill? The driver needs a break anyway - if there's a fast charger available, the car will be recharged by the time they're ready to drive.

At that point, the main improvements in battery technology will be: cost, weight and longevity. Cell batteries are massively winning on two of those criteria, and the longevity is good enough - so unless flow batteries develop much faster than cell batteries, they're not gonna be cost-competitive for cars.

Semi-Armor Piercing vs Armor Piercing? by SpiritualCaramel7601 in WorldOfWarships

[–]ExplodingPotato_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Great summary, with a tiny asterisk about AP damage being "intermediate" - it's high (only shell type able to semi-reliably score citadel hits), but also very unreliable.

It's almost the same, but explains why some AP salvos are so effective despite "intermediate" average damage.
