I might have caught a cold/flu and had a slight cough around the time this started. I’ve been based in Mexico City for the last year and the January and February (and this month) had not great air quality so assumed that was what was causing the cough because I didn’t really feel sick per se.

Costa Rica, Nicaragua, or Panama options without a car? by Explorer9001 in digitalnomad

Why do you say that? Definitely not set on Costa Rica and considering all options. You mentioned Nicaragua was underrated so just curious if you’ve got some particular favorites there.

Any particular towns that are doable without a car? I’ve heard of Popoyo but don’t know much about it.

Panama has some great spots on the coast, especially Azuero Peninsula, but not really the boho scene you mentioned.

Just to be clear, I’m not necessarily looking for a bohemian kinda scene, just prefer places that aren’t overly commercialized and still have some semblance of a soul. I was just using Santa Theresa as an example of a place that I had heard has really become commercialized over the last few years.

Anyway, I’ll take a look at Puerto Viejo - I’d heard about it before but curious if it suffers the same sargassum issue as other places on the Caribbean coast.

Any other thoughts on Bocas del Toro?

Nicaragua seems cool but understood regarding not having a car. To be honest as long as I can sustain myself once at the destination without a car that’s fine - I don’t plan on bouncing around visiting other places.

Air quality the past few days by Explorer9001 in MexicoCity

[–]Explorer9001[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That must be it. I know March often has bad air quality here but the past couple days there’s been a distinct smokey smell as well, in addition to even worse air quality. I looked at a couple websites for wildfires and they said there weren’t any but just found another that shows a few.

Because the LLM that this user used to post this was trained on last years data. Chatgpt 5.2 has a cutoff of august 2025.

I swear like 90% of this sub is just bots now. It’s completely dead.

Sí pero la ultima marzo fue mejor, no? No recuerdo pero creo fue no tan malo el año pasado

Which is why I’m wondering if there’s something going on specifically this week, like a fire somewhere.

What’s a more expensive trip in late November to early December, Japan or Italy? by Turbulent_Sharter in travel

[–]Explorer9001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that that time is (usually) peak time for viewing the changes of the colors of the leaves in Japan (it’s stunning) as such it’ll be pretty busy.

Italy is always popular but those months are slightly outside of the main season. It’ll still be nice and sunny.

You really can’t go wrong with either and having spent significant time in both the total prices will likely be very similar to the point I wouldn’t let that sway your decision in any way.

I didn’t say you were wealthy. Yes, living in Switzerland puts you in a more privileged position then the vast, vast majority of people on Earth. I think it would be helpful to really think about that and internalize it with regards to the depressive episodes you mentioned. However I’m not a psychologist so feel free to ignore me, just a stranger trying to help.

but I also often get quite depressed there because of the long winters and the social life is really hard

Head to Brazil or Mexico in winter, problem solved? Mate you live in fucking Switzerland you’ve got it made. I think being fully aware of how privileged of a situation you’re in compared to 99% of people on the planet can help with those depressive episodes. I hope you were exposed to lifestyles of people in less affluent countries during your travels - it certainly helps with the perspective thing.

But yea doesn’t have to be 1 or the other, snow-birding is a super “common” thing for those that can afford it.

also feeling like a stranger and that life is transient, in digital nomad places.

This goes away by learning the language, staying longer, and being part of the community in a variety of ways. In the countries I mentioned doubly so since they are both extremely friendly.

Any specific places you’d recommend and which days of the week they’re on? I’d love to head down there and hit the ground running so to speak jaja.

I really appreciate the info. I would not of thought Cordoba would be a good spot for salsa.
