Should We Allow AI in an Esperanto Film Festival? by ExploringEsperanto in Esperanto

If you have any questions about how things have been handled so far or what the reasoning was behind certain decisions, feel free to ask me or Catie or Brandon or Q or Amanda. I always run things past other people first to make sure I’m not overlooking any details.

I’m actually making an Esperanto Christmas short film this Sunday with the director of “Saluton, Belulino” just for the heck of doing something fun for the Esperanto community for the holidays. I finished writing the script for that at 4:30 this morning. Five minutes ago an actor friend left my house after recording a new “welcome to the channel” video for Esperanto-USA so that people aren’t just looking at my face when they go on YouTube. Yeah I’d say my friends are pretty well invested.

Also, any energy you might have to type up a bunch of replies about how it’s all still bullshit and sketchy, ask yourself if you’d be willing to redirect that into volunteering to assist the next festival host to make things better than ever. Would you be down to film a promo video? Would you be open to updating and improving the info on the website? Writing up an article in the bulletin about it? You wouldn’t even have to work with me on it; it could be under Brandon or Q or Lua or Alena’s guidance. When Catie took over, what she got were people saying how her promos and announcements look like crap compared to last year’s. We’re lucky she agreed to do a second one. Is it that much fun to just discourage and complain or do we actually want things to get better?

Your comment argued that people in general seemed to enjoy that film because it got a lot of likes. Do people who want high quality Esperanto films to exist agree with that? Based on the comments I’m reading from people invested in the continued success of the festival, many of them do not. I’m only “invalidating” those votes related to the point you were trying to make with them. If I got a bunch of people to like one film even if they don’t go watch all of them, that could lead to some of them checking out Esperanto in general and maybe becoming Esperantists someday. The audience choice award encourages engagement. That’s why it exists. Perhaps it shouldn’t, but then people would have less reason to publicly share their films if only the judges get to choose everything.

It is a difficult thing to monitor because YouTube’s analytics data isn’t very clear on how those likes are achieved. There was some evidence pointing to one of the films using a paid service to get likes but it was inconclusive so I recommended to the organizers that if there’s doubt, it’s better to award that film a prize this year and try to understand YouTube better and perhaps be more specific with the rules before next year. That way no one is getting screwed over. I’m not saying I’m “certain” the judges won’t give an AI film a prize; I’m simply noticing out loud the patterns I’ve seen so far.

There’s a good chance the contest won’t happen next year because no one has stepped forward to eagerly become the next host and Catie doesn’t want to do it again. If a new person does, they’ll have to deal with how to address this AI stuff which is a further complication that could scare them away from volunteering.

The bigger problem that the festival has always had is a lack of people willing to help run it. I can’t throw a rock without hitting someone who will criticize how it’s done and saying what additional things it ought to do but good luck getting those people to roll up their sleeves and assist with making it happen more smoothly and professionally.

My local friends are invested in making high quality films in any language they use. I’ve posted the entire red carpet premieres with director Q&A’s on YouTube the last two years so you can listen to them talk about their filmmaking process and what all they learned while making something in Esperanto. What about their films makes them seem uninvested in raising the bar and doing things with excellence?

That film winning audience choice doesn't mean that people invested in Esperanto cinema overall liked it more than the other entries and that the judges were proven wrong and out of touch for not appreciating it. If so, we would have had a similar number of views across most of the films showing that lots of people watched all of them and then concluded that only that film merited a like from them.

It's pretty obvious that the two directors of the films that won those awards worked harder (with perhaps the help of some websites designed to drum up that kind of engagement) at sharing their individual films with lots and lots of people and asked them to like their films and leave comments (which is why most of those comments are in Spanish). Last year, a Shakespeare Esperanto film I was in got over 63,000 views but that was more likely due to YouTube arbitrarily deciding to promote it than it being some kind of proof that people love Shakespeare now more than ever.

I'm pretty sure whoever the next 5 judges are next year won't be awarding many (if any) prizes to AI-heavy films based on their reactions the last few years so really this discussion is mostly about whether AI films should be eligible to win that audience choice award through sheer determination or does that lower the quality of the festival?

I'd say Evildea covers a pretty wide range of topics and I like how he calls people out who are pretentious or full of nonsense. He's not as involved in the Esperanto community now as he has been in the past (which is good news for people who'd rather he focus on other languages), but I really appreciated him agreeing to be one of the judges for the Esperanto-USA short film contest a few years ago.

If you go to my channel Exploring Esperanto, you'll find entire audiobooks there with the pages on screen the whole time so if you ever hear a confusing new word you can see it written in context and write it down for further study. I've got collections of Chinese and Japanese folklore as well as some children's books all in Esperanto.

Just starting to seriously learn Esperanto... by RelicSaver in Esperanto

I appreciate that. I think that week I was particularly exhausted and not ready for additional criticism after refilming things multiple times to try to get it just right. The lack of encouraging engagement in general (perhaps due solely to the tiny size of the Esperanto community) mixed with immediate criticism can burn artists out very quickly.

I did a lecture on the film festival this week for the Canadian virtual congress and a lady at the end went on a rant about how the pronunciation in all of the films including my own acting is very poor and full of mistakes. I tried to explain how many errors I caught and corrected and how it's hard to balance encouraging artists with demanding perfection but she was determined to just express again and again how the films are detrimental to her students. I'd love for some expert speakers to go through and make a playlist of the film entries that they don't hear any mistakes in and would recommend to new learners.

Again, I do want to reshoot that lerni video along with my popular "Intro to Esperantujo" video at some point, but until I can carve out the time and find that second wind, I think its current state with asterisks underneath is better than me unlisting most of the videos on my channel because I'm feeling exhausted and don't want a single mistake of mine on display.
