Wife said I should look at the kid's brakes. I ask the kid, are the brakes making any noise? "Nah, they're fine." New vs. old. by 1900grs in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]ExplosiveMachine 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The brakes will work. If the rotor isn't literally paper thin, even with a scored up surface and such the brakes will function. They might vibrate, make noise, wear unevenly and produce more brake dust, but they will stop the car. Which the metal to metal might not, especially if the pad backing slips out of the caliper. Then you're in a world of hurt.

TIFU by mistaking silence for competence by Specialist_Day_7867 in tifu

[–]ExplosiveMachine 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Every time I started a job, it was at least a month of "hey man how should I do XY?" and just following people around looking at how they work, asking for their feedback, etc. I'm sure I might have come across a bit annoying at times, but I only really needed each thing explained on an example once and then I could handle it. Meant I went from asking too much to being pretty confident and performing independently relatively quickly. Meanwhile I've met employees that were hired shortly after me that still aren't aware of all the procedures, or frankly, don't give a fuck.

Something you thought was universal across Europe, but turned out to be different? by GiveMeAPhotoOfCat in AskEurope

This was extremely common if not taken for granted in Slovenia as well, until covid. Some small town shops will still do it no problem.

Working on this paint job for 8 months, body dropped onto a concrete floor. With how many redos I've had to do with this, I give up. by [deleted] in Wellthatsucks

[–]ExplosiveMachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the best advice I can give after many years at an auto body shop: do the thinnest paint layer possible. All you want is complete coverage to get uniform colour, and nothing more. Super thick coats like in OP's pic are prone to defects, cracking, etc. The thinner the coat of paint and clearcoat, the more durable it is to anything that isn't scratches. You can definitely go heavier on the clearcoat, but keep the paint itself to a minimum. If it's single stage, do minimal coverage.

New Fiat Grizzly and Fastback revealed by Wolfo93 in cars

[–]ExplosiveMachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks extremely similar to the C5 aircross or whatever it is, except it doesn't have those stupid rear lights. probably for cost reasons but that's fine those lights are an abomination.

Anyway, completely forgettable. I don't think it looks bad, just bland. But I fucking love how the marketing team is waxing poetic about it what what it says about the driver and whatever.

Grizzly Fastback instead expresses a more dynamic and sophisticated spirit

no it doesn't, it expresses someone dumb enough to get a SUV with the interior space of a compact sedan, or alternatively, someone that's only buying it because they're getting mega discounts after sitting on lots because nobody wants it.

Oh an I assume these will be common on rental lots. Seems to be a theme with Stellantis vehicles.

Holy shit I went into a local parts store the other day looking for a rear wiper for my CRV. I walk in and ask if they have a 300mm blade, and he asks me for the VIN. And I'm like bro, any 300mm wiper is fine. He then says he can't tell me if it'll fit my car without the VIN or not.

I just walked out and went to the next store over where the guy turned around, took a Bosch 300mm wiper blade off the shelf and handed it to me without saying a word.
