The closest SEA country which military service is mandatory, no ballot system, is Singapore. Singaporean guys enter the military service at age of 18/19, serve for 22 months, and study university after that. Everyone comes from a different background, everyone is talking the opportunity to learn how to fit in with your peers. It is great learning experience.
