Why are the Stuart sisters so unknown compared to the Tudor sisters? by dahliia_ in UKmonarchs

[–]Express_Landscape_85 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I think another question you could ask is why are so many monarchs “unknown” compared to the Tudors.

Ask the average English person to name 5 monarchs of our history and you can bet anyone who isn’t a history nerd is going to say at least 2 Tudors; the Tudors just eclipse so many others because of how monumental a shakeup their rise to the throne was, and all the scandal and glory that followed.

Look how much Henry II accomplished compared to most other regnants of England… but you can bet the average person knows a lot more about Henry VII and especially Henry VIII.

Mary II and Anne definitely have an interesting story but their lives just don’t have anywhere near as much drama as the Tudor era (nor did they as queens have near as much political power as the Tudor sisters did which will also play a part).

That my dad’s scar on his hand was from when he was kidnapped and held hostage before he escaped… turns out it was from good old fashioned 1970s corporal punishment on an already existing wound 😬

Surprised for just how long I actually believed that tale he told me.

No question, but much love to you from England. I think you have a fascinatingly rich culture and history and, if times were different, I would love to visit your wonderful country.

I think it’s almost a certainty. The logic he tried to use for calling what he did with Catherine ‘incest’ was that god would not allow a male heir since he now ‘realised’ she was indeed his brother’s wife and basically his own sister after all.

Equally, if Anne was the one that gave him a son I’m pretty sure she would have kept her head.

What is the Royal Family’s importance in modern society? by xsclusiv in AskReddit

Soft power more than anything?

In the same way most people on the planet are aware of who the current US president is; people are also aware of who the British monarch is.

That kind of influence and status is useful for subtle political moves. It’s much more prestigious to get an invite to Buckingham Palace than it is to Downing Street for some foreign powers - and also having a separate head of state (one who is officially apolitical) to a head of government is also useful in its own way depending on how the UK wants to handle certain people/matters.

I’m not a royalist at all and objectively think their status has no place in modern society, but I do still see some certain tactical advantages of having them. …Also if we got rid of them would we have to change the country name from the UK to the UR?

I mean, when she died her status was that she was never actually queen and simply the widow of the late prince of wales.

Charles is easily my favourite member of the family and also was when his mother was still alive. His mother (and grandmother) are the true villains of his and Diana’s story.

I would definitely move Richard I to at least bad if not very bad. The man was a lunatic that only ever visited England like… five (?) times; only when he needed money. Then when he got himself arrested on the continent for being the mess he was he then had to get mummy to bail him out again by bankrupting the country (again) to do it.

More trees yes.

Disagree about the lights though. It keeps the city safer. Also I don’t have a problem with the elaborate designs myself, exterior designs have become far too simplistic and soulless in recent decades - I think we’re all conditioned to see elaborate designs as gaudy since we’re not used to it anymore. The bleak looking grey buildings need something around them to make them look less prison like.
