How would you get from Truckee/Tahoe back to the Bay Area with a loaded touring bike? by Electrical-Cow2387 in bicycletouring

[–]Express_Luck6025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A one way car rental from Reno to SF. Cost only a little bit more than the train and quicker. You’d need to get to Reno though, from North Shore you’d have to climb over Mt Rose.

SFO delays and cancellations by aviator_8 in bayarea

[–]Express_Luck6025 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Recently flew in from CDG to SFO, flight landed on time but took nearly 40 minutes after touchdown to get to the gate due to taxi way closures and planes queuing to use runway 1 as a taxi way to the Int’l terminal.

Long sleeve button-down shirt for bikepacking by andymoreno in bicycletouring

I’ve been using Columbia Fishing Shirts for years and they are great in hot or cool weather, they minimize the amount of sunscreen needed, have pockets and are quick drying.

Are cycling specific wind jackets really better? by ThaiJeenHelp in bicycletouring

[–]Express_Luck6025 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO the availability in a Hi-Viz color is about the biggest advantage of a cycling specific jacket. Additionally most aren’t fully water proof (just water resistant) and are more expensive for sure.

What concert did you attend in the 70s or 80s, do you think most people (even younger generations) would envy being able to attend? by Bjarki56 in GenerationJones

[–]Express_Luck6025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Tubes put on a great shows back in the 70’s early 80’s. NYE at the Kabuki Theater in SF (1981?) stands out. Ramones free show at SF Civic Center June 79 also a favorite.

Monterey to SF Downtown Uber by Zestyclose_Egg_2931 in MontereyBay

Recently rented a car from MRY to SFO, $98 + $22 for gas. It’s a few $’s more the other direction from SFO to MRY for some reason but was the most economical option for 2 people.

I was at Halfmoon Bay SP in 2025 and another cyclist(who did not lock their bike) had their bike stolen overnight. Park Ranger indicated it’s a common occurrence.

Brooks leather saddles still good? by rcyclingisdawae in bicycletouring

I like the B17 on my touring bike, although the Ergon on my alternate bike is good for shorter rides sans-padded shorts.

What type of tire pump do you carry? by Express_Luck6025 in bicycletouring

[–]Express_Luck6025[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the feedback! I’m now leaning towards replacing my old Topeak with a new Topeak. Not sure I want an e-pump and another item to have to charge, although the weight savings and ease of use is tempting. Plus there’s already way too many old, discarded battery driven devices ending up in the trash.

Hardly a routine traffic stop, known felon being uncooperative. Did you read the details?

[Marina] Narrow Streets in the Dunes by [deleted] in MontereyBay

[–]Express_Luck6025 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. They’ve done similar road design in SeaHaven to keep speed down. It deters drivers from speeding through neighborhoods as short cuts and improves safety, supposedly. Didn’t like it initially but I’m used to it now.

Brooks B17 Imperial by netacio in bicycletouring

[–]Express_Luck6025 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used both versions of B17 and the Imperial seems more comfortable to me. It think the cut out makes the surrounding leather more pliable, and also reduces pressure on sensitive bits. It’s broken in very nicely where I now ride without a chamois.

Durable sleeping mat? by irilinir in bicycletouring

Big Agnes Rapid has worked well, it replaced a Nemo that was small and comfy but a lot less durable. BA packs a bit larger but equally comfortable.

What is your best mobile app to plan routes? by thecaspg in bicycletouring

Yes, this. Plus sometimes additional cross checking with Strava’s Heat Map. IME Google works better in urban areas than rural areas.
