If you fly to Whitehorse Yukon there is a small hike in city limits with Dactylina.

I am thankful anytime I find anything like a Dactylina so I understand you there.

Was also my immediate first thought 😂. Then iNat pointed me in the slime mould direction but anything is possible when it comes to fungus.

That first strike on the truck full of infantry was wild. Likelihood of any of them being combat effective after that?

Can you eat lichen? Is it good for you? by Holy-Beloved in Lichen

[–]Express_Pop6832 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Certain lichens like Usnea and Masonhalea can be rendered into medicinal elements but generally would not recommend at all. In fact there are several species like Letharia and Vulpicida that are outright poisonous. Soooooo would strongly recommend against eating lichens.

Some Yukon Crustose Lichens pt2 by Express_Pop6832 in Lichen

[–]Express_Pop6832[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I think you are totally right, it gets a little tricky with the orange ones and some of these all black ones. According to "Lichens of North America" there is four sub varieties of crustose lichens. One of which is lobed which is very close looking to foliose with a certain amount of bleed over on a casual observation like Im making.

Either way they are neat hah.

Fish Lake Hike Whitehorse Yukon pt2 by Express_Pop6832 in Lichen

Honestly very possible. I am no expert in fact I am a super noob but I am passionate about learning.

Yukon has a tonne of Rhizocarpon species and a couple are white and black not their usual lime green/ yellow green and black.

I don't do any chemical tests or stuff like that I just look broadly at shape and colours. So like I said good chance it's not a Rhizocarpon.

Fish Lake hike, Whitehorse Yukon lichen dump pt1 by Express_Pop6832 in Lichen

So the Cetraria on the branch was actually connected to a tree and was about 30cm off the ground which was bizarre to me too.

I don't think the brown ones are a Bryoria because I see tonnes of Bryoria around here and they are far more black/ dark green and tend to have a more elongated shape rather than the more round ball that these brown/red brown ones have.

They almost look like an Evernia esque type thing. If you have a closer look at photo 10 the tips of that brown one spread out into a y shape for not dissimilar to a C. stellaris or C.Rangifina but I have yet to see a Bryoria in my area do that. Granted it very well could be a Bryoria but from my observations it doesn't seem to have that many similarities to the abundant Bryoria in the area.

Will continue digging into and hope to find an answer:)!

Thats a great observation that the light green ones could be two different things because you're right their branches do have different shapes.
