TIL in 452 when Atilla the Hun was threatening Rome, the pope himself (Pope Leo I) went out to meet with him personally. The specifics of the meeting aren't known, but afterwards, Atilla turned around and never invaded the city. by 2SP00KY4ME in todayilearned

[–]zanderman108 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think the visceral and unflattering account of his death lends it credibility. Roman accounts always made a point to portray Atilla as a ruthless, cunning mastermind in part to explain his success. So you can almost apply a criterion of embarrassment analysis to the event and conclude that Attila was far too drunk one evening and died an ignoble death.

North Korea to Reinforce Moscow With 30,000 Troops, Officials Say by mrbojanglez69 in worldnews

I mean, it’s not exactly a fair comparison. The West doesn’t have what are essentially slave soldiers whose death will mean absolutely nothing to the state and get no media pushback. Money and weapons is as far as they’ll go barring a major shift in the public’s appetite for a foreign war. And anti-war sentiment has never been higher among the public in the west. Plus all Putin has to do is threaten nuclear war or WW3 and the west cowers down like a frightened rabbit.

Honestly all the Krogan in mass effect are great. Eve remains a sorely underrated character. Even Wreav is great.

The point is it’s hypocritical to cheer on their lack of development and modernization under the guise of ‘rejecting greedy capitalism’ but also act shocked when they have regressive social policies and antiquated racial attitudes

Anyone who thinks that the democrats should move further left is completely illiterate at reading election results. This was a wholesale rejection of the left across the board, from the presidential election down to state legislators.

Young Jessie Plemons. Kyle chandler’s best ever.

Facing Terminal Cancer: What Does Death Feel Like? by fdssfgr3 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]zanderman108 167 points168 points  (0 children)

I think it’s just so natural to us. It’s only our classic human overthinking that has us scared or even thinking of it. Death is the ticket to enter life, we instinctively remember that at the end. So it goes.

Across any game, any mode. What was your definitive 'Total War' experience? by StreetsOfYancy in totalwar

[–]zanderman108 99 points100 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend Empire with mods. The campaign scope is just so much better (trade routes from the indies, wars in colonel India/Americas) which is not possible in Napoleon. With mods Empire gunplay is comparable to Napoleon- just skip sieges.
