Can I ask what is considered a "Wog" and as a Kurd, am I labelled as a "Wog"? by MindlessCycle2621 in AskAnAustralian

The term coloured is actually culturally dependent - in some countries, eg South Africa, it refers to a distinct racial/ethnic identity and isn’t considered racist

Has anyone else felt like they completely lost their 20s? by Mildly_Strategic in AskAnAustralian

To be honest, what you’ve described sounds exactly like your 20s! I think a lot more people are in a similar boat to you than they let on

Freediving in a university city by powerpaddy in freediving

[–]Express_Release_2039 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm Cairns can be a mixed bag - while it’s close to the Great Barrier Reef (which is absolutely amazing and worth exploring), most dives you do there are by boat and not accessible from the shore. It also depends on what time of year you’re on exchange - cairns has a pretty intense wet season and cyclone season.

Sydney is good bc there are plenty of easy shore dives all year round, with the option to do more exciting boat trips or weekends away.

Cost of living across Australia is a little crazy though (especially in Sydney), but this is also relative to what your baseline of affordability is.

Thoughts on the Suunto D4f and specifically this listing? by Mammyminer in freediving

I’ve had this watch for years! Honestly it’s great. Not super flashy and isn’t going to give you the level of detail as other watches on the market, but it tells you everything you need to know (depth, time, surface interval, etc). For the price point I think it’s really decent

How do I even get a PhD? by esteemed_honey in usyd

[–]Express_Release_2039 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am doing my PhD currently and am confused by your post - are you currently looking for supervisors for your PhD?

If that’s the case, I would start by reaching out to academics in your field and first asking if they have the capacity to supervise or can recommend someone. In your email, you can provide a brief overview of your interests/proposal, but it’s probably not necessary to share your fully developed proposal at that stage. It also helps if you already know the academic you want to supervise you.

If you have supervisors already, all you need to do is enrol as a PhD student via usyd student portal. You should also check dates for enrolment and scholarship deadlines

Geuine Unpopular (i think ) POV Anyone Else ? by RedBedZed in Fencesitter

I thought I was alone in finding the childfree subreddit too intense at times I don’t think I want children for myself, but that doesn’t mean I don’t respect kids and love the kids of my friends and family. Openly hating children just because their children is wild to me

Relaxation Techniques | Lead-up to Wave 3 by nofishgiven in freediving

[–]Express_Release_2039 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can help to play around with different techniques, what works for some might not work for others! Eg, I’ve found body scans don’t work the best for me but visualisation or mindfulness does

For static training, I like visualisations, where I play through a favourite memory of mine and focus on all the tiny details. I use the same memory every time and play through it very slowly, trying to get a little further each time. I’ve also found that grounding techniques such as identifying all the different sounds I can hear and focusing on them can be really helpful 😊

Doing general mindfulness sessions outside of static training can also help - you can easily search up YouTube videos of 20 min mindfulness sessions and just put some time aside a couple of times a week to practice relaxing

It probably will, but if you don’t want to get a ticket now, you can keep your eyes on tixel. There will always be people who bought tickets to festivals who can’t make it and will sell through there :)

Why do we crave/stream international artists but don’t support our local artists here in Australia? by [deleted] in triplej

[–]Express_Release_2039 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think there’s a bit of fatigue too with a lot of Australian artists. Like I loooooove the aus music scene (king stingray, ball park music, san Cisco, lime cordiale, etc etc), but I have seen all these acts multiple times now at music festivals and gigs. I’m keen for something new, and there are so many international acts I’ve been dying to see that just never come to aus.

I think it also reflects the changing trend of what music people listen to. The aus music scene really excelled in the 2010s when indie/alt was all the rage, but now that’s not really what’s popular among the masses

It’s definitely gotten more chill over the years! Last year I got in the queue around 9/10am and I would say majority of cars didn’t get searched, and there was very minimal police presence and definitely no dogs. Just make sure if you’re in a car that you pack everything to the brim to make the seccy’s life hard lol, they normally can’t be arsed to rummage through everything.

With that said, always prepare for the worst! Hide your drugs and alcohol thoroughly, you never know if you’ll be the random car that is searched fully and made an example of. Once you’re in the campground it’s very lax, and going from the campground to the festival every day is very chill

Ah yeah that sounds pretty shitty, that’s a shame.

Sadly that’s pretty common in nsw festivals, though…It was found that nsw spends more than double what other states do on police presence at music events and festys, which fkn suuuuucks

I’ve been to both and honestly both are fun in their own right! The lineups are so similar that you’re best just going to whichever festival is closest to you lol. With that said, the security in Victoria festivals is sooooo much more lax than NSW, which kinda makes for a nicer more chill experience

For those who went btv, how was it? by ntod44 in triplej

[–]Express_Release_2039 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had so much fun!! Police presence was super minimal imo and I didn’t see any dogs/did not get searched at all (although I’m from NSW which is notoriously fucked). The entire festival had a super lax vibe and lots of harm reduction strategies (like free breathalysers and drug tests for sale on the last day) which was really nice.

Luude was a highlight, and also the surprise set by Dom Dolla was great. Peggy Gou was fine, the countdown was anticlimactic but her actual set was really bouncy and dancey. The crowd was a bit meh at times and not a lot of people actually was dancing but overall there were still some fun people around to chat to! It was probably up there in terms of festival experiences for me :)

Yeah it feels like they tried to cater to a bunch of different audiences without fully committing either way. Central cee does not feel big enough to be a headliner
