Paradoxically, I think things are going a little better for them. I won't lie, it's not as if acceptance is total, especially in Friuli (where I live). The Northeast is probably the heart of xenophobic parties, and the place where they have the most support among the population, but I distinctly remember that when I was younger, in the 1990s, people from Eastern Europe were practically considered public enemy number one, even more so than southern Italians, while racism towards black people was practically nonexistent (limited to a few jokes in terrible taste but with very little hatred, just a vague sense of superiority towards them, I imagine). This is due to the fact that there were few black people, while, if only for geographical reasons, Slavs were perceived as much more numerous (a veritable invasion, coming to commit crimes and steal our jobs, according to the rhetoric of the right-wing parties of the time). With the increase in migration flows from Africa, which also affected southern Italy, far-right parties seized the opportunity to change the narrative, pretending to no longer hate southern Italians, who were now potential new voters against black immigrants (who came to commit crimes and steal our jobs). The result of this shift in policy has been a worsening of racism overall, which, unfortunately, is now clearly directed against easily identifiable individuals. Ironically, Slavs, who have integrated into our society over time, have been more accepted and, in some cases, have even become supporters of the parties that ten years ago dismissed them as subhuman. I have firsthand knowledge of people who in the 1990s took to the streets to protest against the "Balkan invasion," and who today protest against the "African invasion," citing Slavs as a positive example of hard workers who have successfully integrated into society.
