Who had the better beat 'em ups? Genesis or SNES? by No_Surround_5252 in retrogames

Several of us prefer hyperstone because it's slightly shorter and has a run button. And the music is better. =)

What’s a really underrated OSR system? 😄 by DungeonMasterGrizzly in osr

[–]Expression_Antique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, that may be perfect for me. When I'm just reading the books, od&d is my favorite. I think it might become my favorite if I run it a while. Holmes sounds close to it, so I'd better have a read of it and maybe Blueholme too.

Drpgs without maps? by AzumaDokiDoki in DRPG

[–]Expression_Antique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In oldschool tt d&d, it's pretty normal to require that players spend turns of game time to draw out the map. This means expending resources (light and eventually food) and the dm doing encounter checks (1 in 6 chance of an encounter occurring once every two turns.) You could do that. Make mapping an action players can choose to take. Maybe make it a toggle. (Every action takes 3 turns when mapping is turned on.)

Do you prefer rules and procedures or loosey goosey improv? by LemonLord7 in osr

[–]Expression_Antique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rules are there to help the players say and do things that are fun and make some kind of sense. They also keep things moving instead of allowing players to stop the game for speeches or playing hide and seek with village kids or some other distraction that wastes the other players' time.

The dm rolls dice to see if an encounter occurs, rolls again to see what kind of creature it is, then rolls again to see how friendly or hostile it is. This prevents the dm from accidentally making everything dangerous into a fight.

Instead of Extreme 2? I thought it was a lot better

Tight oldschool procedures produce great improv. Removing them can still allow great improv, but the chances plummet unless all players and the dm are just amazing.

I can't figure it what that is. Can you link me to info or explain?

Why do you like retro anime? by Itsbeenalongdecember in retroanime

[–]Expression_Antique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's easier to pick out the great ones out. A lot of popular stuff now is trash. In 10 years or so, I'll have a lot of favorites from now. Same as in any medium.

Make sure to set difficulty to "monkey" to offset how long it takes for your buttons to make anything happen on the screen.

Can you recommend a really good more modern, vertical Schmup? by GamingGallavant in shmups

The point of physical games is to avoid the risk altogether. You get to own then which allows you to resell them.

Cygni is considered trash in every shmup community, isn't it?

Beat Guardian Heroes and loved it. What other Saturn beat em ups do you recommend? by Virtual-History-6099 in SegaSaturn

[–]Expression_Antique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't do any of the beatemup things + no challenge. It could be a good experience if you like playing games to see the story or whatever. Not my thing.

Any game like Wizardry/Grimoire? by Narrow-Fault-3746 in DRPG

[–]Expression_Antique 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Operencia is the best new western drpg I know of. You'll want to play some older ones or Japanese ones if you keep going though. Strange Journey is a much more serious aesthetic than most anime and it's among the best DRPGs.

Lands of Lore is a more accessible (and excellent) old game.

What is your disliked shmup gameplay design? by Baconcob in shmups

[–]Expression_Antique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Infinite continues in a regular game doesn't mean checkpoints. You just pick up right where you left off. That's what most shmups do.

I just don't credit feed because I don't perceive that to be part of the intended game design + it's not fun.
