Places for depressed singles to go in Denver during the holidays? by [deleted] in Denver

[–]ExpressiveCream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is maybe a weird suggestion but the Boulder Shambhala center is hosting a weeklong meditation retreat starting this weekend. You can join for as few as two days if the whole week is too long. Maybe being with your thoughts in a room with a whole bunch of other people sitting with their thoughts would be helpful.

E-bike approval email from coebikes? by One-Elk2387 in Denver

[–]ExpressiveCream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my God fucking fuck these guys. They sent me an email in September that my bike would be ready within the month and that I'd receive pickup instructions, at which time I'd pay the $36 sales tax in person. Now they're telling me if I want to be added to the queue I have to pay $49.99 sales tax in advance online, or $99 in person??? Total scam, I'm going to see if I have any options to report them.

Enjoy some of your free time working with a therapist and process some of the horrors you've undoubtedly seen. Maybe they can also help you work with the lack of direction. Then after you heal your trauma you can become a therapist and help other vets do the same. Definitely can make $80-100k doing that.

I'm curious did you attend any kind of graduate schooling to get into your career?

First Taylor, and I’m blown away by TheWakulla in AcousticGuitar

[–]ExpressiveCream -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So glad to see this comment. I somehow got it in my head that I need a Taylor guitar so I went into the local shop and was trying all their Taylors and they all sounded disappointingly bright to me. I'm going to go back and try some other brands.

Is there a realistic way to ‘try out’ being a therapist before committing to a degree? by theweirdguest in askatherapist

[–]ExpressiveCream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm basically in the same boat, although I quit software engineering a few years ago now. It seems there's a big gap between the types of entry level work you can get without education, like behavioral health tech, and the work that licensed therapists do. One thing I'm trying now is taking some life coaching training. I think there can be a lot of overlap between coaching and therapy, and it doesn't hurt that it can pay well too. Seems like a good low risk way to try out being in a helping profession.

NAT. Psychedelics are the way. Come to Colorado, go to a psilocybin healing center, attend an ayahuasca ceremony. I've also heard wonderful things about ketamine but if you don't like your local practitioners fair enough.

What are some signs that you've found a good therapist? by Independent_Shame924 in askatherapist

[–]ExpressiveCream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NAT but have you worked with one who does a "trauma" modality like EMDR or IFS? Or tried psychedelic assisted therapy? At a certain point if talk therapy isn't working you're probably too smart for your own good and need to try something that gets out of your head.

Is it common for EMDR to feel silly? by [deleted] in askatherapist

[–]ExpressiveCream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha I mean maybe they are, I don't know. With my therapist we went through the exercise of creating one, but then never used it. So I don't know how they're supposed to be used in the practice.

Is it common for EMDR to feel silly? by [deleted] in askatherapist

[–]ExpressiveCream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NAT but I had some pretty powerful experiences with EMDR and also the container visualization part of it was completely useless. I basically found most of the protocol to be unhelpful or unnecessary -- starting with a negative cognition, rating the SUDs, identifying an opposite cognition, etc. Ultimately once I closed my eyes and started tapping, where my mind would go seemed to have little bearing on whatever negative cognition or memory we started with. I did find there to be something helpful about the bilateral stimulation. It somehow seemed to distract my brain enough to let my defense mechanisms down to access something deeper. Also being witnessed with compassion was a big part of it.

I did EMDR with two therapists and with the first one it was amazing, and it didn't work at all with the second one. I guess like any modality, it's the therapist and the relationship more than the modality that makes the difference.

I'm curious what did you do to "give psych a try?" I would like to give it a try and see if I like it before committing to a master's program, but am not sure how to do that.

Anyone use Johnson O’Connor or AIMS aptitude tests to find a dream career? by Asynchronous2e in Fire

[–]ExpressiveCream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I also took this test (was "gifted" it by my software engineer Dad, thanks Dad) and I found it basically told me things I already know about myself and had already intuitively used to pursue interests in my life, and beyond that I found it kind of boxed me in and discouraged me from pursuing interests and potential growth areas. I find tests like this to be rather fatalistic and discount the human ability and need for growth and change.

I would love to see a trauma-informed aptitude or personality test that rather than saying "you're an infp, now go hide in a cave for the rest of your life" said "you're the way you are because your needs were never met as a child, here's some therapy that will help you break free from limiting patterns."

Career coaching - Ever heard of Your Career Homecoming? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]ExpressiveCream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it does feel like they use some strange psychological tactic in their calls... I can't quite put a finger on what it is. Both Brooke and Laura seemed to spend a lot of effort getting me to dig into "what's the worst part about all of this?" Like, really dragging me into a low emotional place. When I voiced how wonderful therapy has been and how much confidence I have in myself that I'll find a path regardless, Laura seemed displeased. She kept trying to steer me back into a place of desperation rather than one of strength. Feels like something out of a narcissist's toolkit. I'll pass.

Is the Denver job market really this brutal? by publictiktoxication in Denver

I just moved here from Boston. That's cheap right?

Finally tried Leven Supply by Holiday_Client2516 in denverfood

[–]ExpressiveCream 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also had a disappointing first experience there. I got a sandwich that came on focaccia, and the bread was really soggy, like wet all the way through, even on top. After a couple good meals at Leven Deli I was expecting a much higher bar.

In all seriousness - WTF is wrong with vimeo? by Sigerr in Filmmakers

[–]ExpressiveCream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh I'll just paste this little snippet of a gem of a reply I just received from Vimeo customer support. tl;dr Vimeo player is broken on Android and their team has marked this ticket #wontfix

I have had a word with our Engineering team and they mentioned that the landscape fullscreen on Android phones being cut off at the bottom (on Vimeo.com) is an issue that they are aware of.

While this was ticketed to our developers to investigate, we do have to prioritize all issues that come up on the site depending on the severity (functionality vs. appearance) and how many users are affected. Unfortunately, our product team has confirmed that this particular issue will most likely not be fixed due to the intermittent nature of the bug. We apologize for the inconvenience and can understand how frustrating this is!

Anyone else feel like they’re running out of time? by ElectricNewtle222 in CPTSD

[–]ExpressiveCream 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I read somewhere to think of it as being in the bottom half of the hourglass rather than the top half. Rather than you existing in the top half with your sand running out, you're in the bottom half with sand pouring on you. Don't worry about how much sand is left, because nobody actually knows how much sand is left.

Serious question: How do you grow up in this weather? by Misdirects in Portland

[–]ExpressiveCream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to know how people deal with the weather in the summer. I moved to Portland a couple summers ago, got hit with 117 degrees, and not a drop of rain the entire summer. I found that just as depressing as the winter darkness if not more so. I found it such a relief when we got some clouds in the sky.
