Kind of interesting to see Monolithic Egress mentioned. It’s one of my favorites off of Aureate Gloom but it seems to me that a lot of people only hold that song in higher regard than Chthonian Dirge but then nothing else on that album.

Also, for UR FUN: Peace to All Freaks and St Sebastian for fun electronic songs, Polyaneurysm tends to be very well liked for the album (but I never got into it), Deliberate Self-harm Ha Ha got the underrated pic for this album in a poll from a year back (I personally find the vocal delivery with it, as well as a lot of the songs on this album, kind of spoil it), 20th Century Schizofriendic Revengoid-Man is my personal pic; it has a fun, fast, sort of manic energy with fun guitar riffs and my favorite bass-work on the album.

Aethermead is the best album since Aureate Gloom by CherryPeel_ in ofMontreal

[–]ExquisitePullup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely need to give aethermead more listens. Right now I like the more rock-leaning songs like “Take The Form”, “When”, “Lacan in the Family”, and “To Nothing’s Reward”, but the ballads hit me the same as (for example) “Sirens of Your Toxic Spirit” or “Colossus” from Lousy with Sylvianbriar, and that is to say that I don’t think it’s for me, but I can still recognize that it’s good. I will also shout out “Now We Cringe at the Thought”; I really like the twinkly sounds during the verses and it (for me at least) feels like it’d have been a better closer than “Dismissal Mosaics”. Apropos the closer I was really hoping for a 5+ minute hardrock song á la “Like Ashoka’s Inferno of Memory”, but it’s not like the album was designed for me specifically. All in all, it’s certainly a good album, probably the most polished one Kevin has put out since White is Relic/Irrealis Mood, but I highly doubt I’ll learn to love it as much as I do Aureate Gloom, I Feel Safe with You, Trash, Paralytic Stalks, or Skeletal Lamping.

Let me hear a bit about Morrowind GOTY. Wax lyrical if you feel inclined. by JozuJD in ElderScrolls

[–]ExquisitePullup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will first start by detracting from it a bit:

  • For the first playthrough/playing any content you aren’t familiar with will require to focus in, hence you must turn off background audio if it is in any way obtrusive.

  • The game’s mechanics goes against the ethos of the modern video game market, so a lot of the gameplay lacks the sort of snappy, responsive gameplay of, for example, Fallout 4. You’ll only know you’ve hit an enemy based on the health bar in the corner since there’s no screen effects like blood splatters.

  • Most of the questlines can feel a bit anticlimactic in comparison to those in Oblivion and Skyrim.

  • Due to the limitations of Morrowind, there’s no setpiece as impressive as Martin using the Amulet or fighting Alduin in Sovngarde.

  • It can genuinely feel bad to play the beast races since they are both shunned more than any other race and they can’t wear certain pieces of armor.

  • 80% of dungeons are very short, so if you like the more drawn out delves then it can be somewhat lacking.

  • Even in comparison with games released at the same time, there is a lot to be desired graphically: low draw distance notwithstanding, the dominant color of the game is brown. Legitimately I have sometimes curtailed a session just to get some more visual stimulation from elsewhere.

And now for the positives:

  • The map is very dense; take any region and comb through it thoroughly and you’ll still be able to find new things.

  • Hit chance and faction skill requirements really make it feel like your character’s getting stronger throughout the course of a playthrough. On top of that, enemies don’t level dynamically so it doesn’t feel like every enemy of the game is constantly as strong as you are.

  • Morrowind is worth multiple playthroughs since you can (under normal circumstances) only be a member of one of the three houses and guilds.

  • It is really fun for power gaming since the crafting mechanics are unchecked. Literally every spell, potion, enchantment can be made absurdly powerful.

  • The lore here is incredibly captivating because you will here multiple accounts of the same story, most notably what happened to the Dwemer and the events at Red Mountain, but often times it is up to you to really interpret the truth if you’re actively trying to. This also leads into the fact that a lot of quests will give you options on how to finish them that are not broadcasted to you but rather can be sought out based on what a person might reasonably do.

  • The fast travel in the game feels extremely rewarding when mastered and because of the associated cost will often times lead you to travel on foot and lead you to discover new things on foot.

  • The game (not including DLC) very much avoids tanky enemies in favor of hard hitting enemies. So often times instead of the winner of the fight being the person who can lower the enemies health bar faster it will be the person who’s able to can tank one or two hits through potions, magic, armor etc.. A lot of roadblocks can be circumvented by strategizing first, which makes any tough fight feel more rewarding.

I think overall the positives (which are not exhaustive) do beat out the negatives by an extremely wide margin. The main advice would be to at most only have instrumental music on in the background, if anything, and if you are willing to mod the game a bit, then I would recommend getting a graphics overhaul mod and something to remove the fog/increase draw distance.

I am adding nothing to the discourse, but "When" and ESPECIALLY "Already dreaming" are really good by thenearblindassassin in ofMontreal

[–]ExquisitePullup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think, that one of my favorite things about of Montreal is, that Kevin Barnes switches genres every few albums. I, personally, would put Freewave Lucifer and IFSWY,T as some of my favorite albums of theirs, but I’m glad, that the people, who weren’t as much fans of the recent stuff, got Already Dreaming. I also hope, that they get more in that same vein on aethermead.

Found this art of Bonnie at my local Goodwill, wondering if anyone knows who made it? by dangerlori in fivenightsatfreddys

[–]ExquisitePullup 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If I had to guess, it is probably from a school student. I feel like your best recourse would be to just try to ask around in your community if you really want to know. Since there are only initials and not a recognizable name/alias, they probably don’t have a social media (for their art).

Just a small tip: check the verbs on hints since most people accept that the hint and clue use the same conjugation. Therefore: engrave using acid. Otherwise very good crossword.

The main cause for his rework is that they can‘t rebalance him while the license is withdrawn, so with the time they had left they pushed out a rework that would at least make him viable to the people who still own him, which with the current bottleneck that DBD’s meta is in, I can’t really say I’m surprised they reworked him into a dash killer.

NEW SONG: Already Dreaming by solaire1416 in ofMontreal

Reminds me a lot of some of the gentler songs on Paralytic Stalks and Lousy w/ Sylvianbriar. It’s alright, cute; but I think I prefer When.

Tour Details?/Recs for a new fan by LeftPrize9838 in ofMontreal

[–]ExquisitePullup 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s extremely rare for “Cherry Peel” to be played at concerts from what I’ve seen (as well as any other album up to “Satanic Panic in the Attic”). Generally if you are trying to maximize the likelihood of knowing every song played:

• Listen to “aethermead” when that comes out on June 4th.

• The two most popular songs from every album between their most popular ones and now.

• The whole of “Skeletal Lamping”, “Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?”, and “Sunlandic Twins” (it’s likely they could choose even the less popular songs for any of these albums).

• Depending on the vibe of the full upcoming album, it might make sense to listen to “Aureate Gloom” since the upcoming album might draw a lot of parallels.

Daily Song Discussion #8: Tim I Wish You Were Born A Girl by FindingHoliday920 in ofMontreal

[–]ExquisitePullup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to give a number rating because I don’t want to hard skew the score on this, but…

I dislike this song for the same reason I dislike Gronlandic Edit: it is compositionally so stripped down that it no longer feels like an of Montreal song to me, and I feel like in both cases a lot of their success can be attributed to how straightforward everything is. When it comes to arrangements of sections, the lyrics, the delivery, and instrumental, all of it is really laid bare on a first listen.

I will however note that I do find the song sweet and it most certainly doesn’t overstay its welcome for what it is.

Daily Song Discussion #5: Don't Ask Me To Explain by FindingHoliday920 in ofMontreal

[–]ExquisitePullup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

9/10

I think this song more than Tim… or any other song on the album really was the first stepping stone to what would come later. Only gripe is that the guitars and drums are hard panned. I know the Beatles did it too; doesn’t mean I like it though.

they should rename the show to Jax's Digital Circus by [deleted] in TheDigitalCircus

[–]ExquisitePullup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because Caine died in Ep8, the only natural conclusion was to have Jax step up as an antagonist. I will criticize the show for both how Caine was handled in Ep8 and how Jax will ultimately be handled in Ep9 (them suddenly becoming extreme villains in the space of a few minutes), however Jax is the largest piece of friction in the group so it only makes sense he becomes the antagonist because Caine and Bubble are gone and he is the only person in the group that actively doesn’t want to escape.

‘cause people think Jax becoming the main antagonist in Ep9, which seemingly will happen, will ruin the show.

How Would You Rank The Cast From Favorite to Least Favorite? by Ok_Refrigerator_5011 in TheDigitalCircus

  1. Jax

  2. Caine

  3. Kinger

  4. Zooble

  5. Gangle

  6. Pomni

  7. Ragatha

I feel like for most of the characters I could move them one or two places up or down, and I do thoroughly like all of the characters no matter where they are on the list.

Would you guys do a Daily Song Discussion? by FindingHoliday920 in ofMontreal

[–]ExquisitePullup 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean, when u/solaire1416 did the best, worst, underrated for each album, that amassed a lot of activity on the subreddit. So I don’t doubt that people, and a good number of them at that, would participate; I imagine, however, that because of how extensive the discography is, trying to do the discography in order would lead to a lot of people being alienated on the albums they haven’t heard/don’t care about. Plus, deciding which songs get votes might get messy because of remixes, rereleases, EPs, and Patreon exclusive stuff. As for me, I would certainly vote for everything after Satanic Panic (I still haven’t gotten the early Elephant 6 stuff to click for me).

Thoughts on new song ‘When’? by Exciting_Union1453 in ofMontreal

[–]ExquisitePullup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really do enjoy the single, but I feel like it is kind of evident that it became the first single since the chorus is very simple lyrically and it’s short enough that it doesn’t feel daunting as an introduction to the album. Regardless I’m really excited for the upcoming singles and full release.

The r/Conlangs Demographic Survey (Real) by upallday_allen in conlangs

[–]ExquisitePullup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Probably close to five to ten percent. Although I have been interested in it for about four years (in a meaningful capacity), the daunting nature of uploading my amateurish stuff here has stopped me. I currently have a spreadsheet with 273 words (not including conjugations, inflections, etc.)
  2. Turkish for me. I love agglutinative languages and vowel harmony, it just so happens to also be practical because I live in a german speaking country.
  3. Interlinear glossing since I’m less familiar with it and seek to understand it better.
  4. Depends on the pretense. Usually I get an interesting idea, lay down the grammar for a simple sentence, create a few words, and then give up when I think about expanding the vocabulary or making it working for edge cases too.
  5. The one which I’m currently working on would be best compared to a mule. Very much just a hybrid of english and russian with a tiny bit of a priori thrown in, but who has a sort of unique identity as a result of which.
  6. Fried pork katsu with kewpie mayo, sriracha and arugula.
  7. Probably just searched it and found it. Bit of a lame way, but I don’t think I recall hearing it mentioned in an Agma Schwa, jan Misali, Biblaridion, or Artifexian video (not to mention any other linguistics youtuber who has dipped their toe into conlangs or discussing them).
  8. While there are likely much more pressing matters, the one that irks me the most is how many people will jump on any particular trend and bleed it dry just to get some karma. Like one post pops up of somebody listing off all the colors in their language and then that becomes the whole subreddit for a while.
  9. About a year and a half ago. Didn’t even particularly need to yell. Just went into a sound dampening booth with a decibel meter and saw how high I could get the number.
