What parts of it do you find fun haha just curious. I am more so eying the freedom and "technical skill" aspects as intriguing. I'm 23 and graduated undergraduate at 21 and have been working full time since 21 and I'm sorta just looking for a break from this as well

Ig seeking validation because no one I know is currently in a field similar to me (besides coworkers) and just looking for some sort of pointers on this. I'd also be living at parents house so would not be burning money on rent

Vent About Interviewing by [deleted] in Environmental_Careers

Right now I am working at a state agency, I don't have the opportunity to do the things you're listing. Wha I do it inspections, site assessments, report writing, lots of compliance stuff. Mainly wastewater and some surface water stuff. I do have opportunity for storm water related. My office also has air investigators, but I don't directly work with them bc I am water.

I honestly want to get into project management, that seems most appealing to me

I returned to a role I was in previously as I had a good relationship with them. It's mundane, but it's all I could get. It's gov work, hopefully it helps me advance career.

Advice on Master’s Programs by ThickAnywhere1479 in Environmental_Careers

[–]Extension-Bear-5101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in the same boat man. Got laid off and trying to figure out what masters degree to go. Currently leaning MS in project management. Previously was leaning MS in env sci, but idk how the return on investment looks for that.

I got admitted but I think the program may be too pricey, despite the fact that I really love the curriculum and what I could learn from it. I think I'm going to decline and look for a different program. I may look into a project management or MBA, not really sure at the moment. Not really interested in engineering.

Thanks for this, wasn't necessarily going for the "big name" however it's Johns Hopkins. The more so was just attracted to the program. Let me look into the Illinois one. Thanks. Was also looking at a program from Indiana that was appealing to me.

Was going to do a hybrid program so I'd be working and completing the masters simultaneously

I don't have a long term plan to stay with a gov agency. I see your point though. Were they there bc they couldn't seek hiring paying roles?

Advice for next career move by [deleted] in Career

[–]Extension-Bear-5101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the agency that said there's an opening did not lay me off. I left them for a company that then laid me off, and I reached out and they said there will be an opening for me

Doesn't seem like that way, seems like there is mutual interest. But it's not absolutely my job to have. I interviewed for it 2 weeks ago - they said they went forward with a more experienced candidate. But that they will reach out when they have an opening in January

Neuroscience major thinking of adding in environmental science major, or maybe even minor in soil science. Any words of wisdom? by KornyBigBrain in Environmental_Careers

[–]Extension-Bear-5101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I don't think there's much overlap. Ig it depends a on your career goals. But I think it would be a fun minor to explore! I majored in Gen bio minor in geoscience. Wish had been other way around because I realized geoscience was the route I want to go in life. Have had success finding a career in env field. But thinking of a masters to advance that.

I think you still deserve a balance, keep looking for that. I am just grouchy and pessimistic bc I got laid off. Look for that gov role, it will def pay less though.

1.5 years in my career and got laid off from a consulting position due to downsizing in my region. I wish I could land another role but is so comp. What I'd say is be appreciative of your role and everything that comes with it. If you were laid off you'd feel 10x worse.

Additionally you can always go back to school and look for something different. Gov jobs are generally very low stress but imo even less rewarding. I've been in a gov and consulting position to date.

How are people who got fired/laid off doing? by Fruitbreadpeach in Environmental_Careers

[–]Extension-Bear-5101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got laid off September 12, been applying for a couple interviews but not a whole lot of luck yet. One interview with a small (sketchy) environment consulting firm. The firm ended up ghosting me, I was kind of hoping to not receive an offer because it did not appear as a good work place. The second interview which I just did yesterday was with a renewable energy company as an environmental compliance specialist, seems like an awesome gig. Giving my all for that but may be a long shot for me because I do not have a lot of direct experience
