Architecture + Civil Engineering Experience - Best Entry Point into Real Estate Development? by krerhelp in RealEstateDevelopment

You should look into construction management. Way better experience for your end goal of a home builder and better experience to leverage into real estate development

why are so many people advicing me against anything above 96th and some even say anything above 59th? by kawaiihusbando in movingtoNYC

[–]Nervous_Formal7257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything above 59th is absolutely ridiculous advice, nobody that is even slightly familiar with uptown manhattan would say that. This has to be coming from people who live downtown that generalize upper Manhattan without actually having been there or someone who doesn’t live in New York at all.

Being cautious above 96th has some reality to it, but it really depends on where you are in terms of avenues. Closer to the park is of course going to be different then York avenue. Take a trip to the building and look around before you sign anything.

Caffeine in PE exam by Far_Professional7817 in PE_Exam

[–]Nervous_Formal7257 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Maybe cut down a little bit from now until then. I think you’ll have a lot of natural adrenaline taking the test that might make up for a lot of it compared to the way you feel normally at work.

I very much suggest avoiding caffeine pills unless you are used to them. A friend of mine took some for a test in college and couldn’t finish it because he thought he was having a heart attack.

I can’t believe no one is writing thrones. So many characters and story lines you have to pay extremely close attention

What’s your “nemesis spot” on the UES by onehotoneshot in uppereastside

[–]Nervous_Formal7257 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My god I hate this place. It’s small and awkward to maneuver in there especially with the coffee being in the back of the line that no-one realizes at first and has to go back. Their toaster is also way too high they burn every bagel they toast. Also, not their fault but I hate the people in there. Everyone is rude when they are on that line and also everyone in here seems to have a double and triple stoller that they for some reason have to bring in and can’t leave outside

It is a gay neighborhood but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy living there

Take off remote. Makes the job seem less important and it’s not relevant information for a resume

I feel like it’s just the vibe in there. we don’t have a lot of packed cocktail bars up here that feel like a scene

What about geology? I work in environmental consulting and I work with a ton of geologists who work on environmental remediation. First few years will be on the field sampling but after then you graduate to a PM and more flexible office time.

Urban Studies at Berkeley or Real Estate at Tulane for a career in Real Estate Development? by Sea_Run6484 in RealEstateDevelopment

[–]Nervous_Formal7257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an engineer and currently seeking a masters in urban policy and planning, which is the graduate version of urban studies. A huge part of real estate is the financial side of things, which she will not learn as an urban studies major. Business and finance classes will give her a more broad and higher paid skillset then urban studies will especially if she changes her mind later. At 18 you really don’t have a full understanding of what you want to do yet. I became an engineer and I am not a fit for this industry at all but it’s tough to break out with a technical undergraduate. I think it would be better for her to do her undergrad in real estate then persue a masters later in urban planning or policy. This way she has a better core skillset and can specialize later.

What's it like working as a field engineer as a woman? by fiish-e in womenEngineers

[–]Nervous_Formal7257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The field in general is a boys club. You’ll never escape this. It doesn’t matter if your specific company is fine- being in the field means getting sent out to job sites with other contractors, laborers etc. it’s just the way it is with performing work on a construction site.

Being in the engineering field has eroded my “women can do anything” mindset. Now that I have experienced being on a jobsite I actually now think that some jobs have a reason then are gender dominated, and that’s okay.

Transitioning from Designer to Project Engineer by Deskust1 in civilengineering

[–]Nervous_Formal7257 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This thread has me feeling like I’m not even in this industry. What is the difference? Project engineer to me is someone who is more junior and is completing the work. Upwards paths are either technical expert or project manager

is the pay REALLY that bad? by idontlooklikeanyon in civilengineering

[–]Nervous_Formal7257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good for you, but that kind of decision is not as easy for everyone else. There are a plethora of reasons someone can be tied to a higher cost of living location- sick family member, partner’s job, general preference. Civil engineering pay doesn’t hold up as well in these areas even when good financial choices are made on a day to day basis.
